Shubbak tiles windows on Windows. It is named for شبّاك, "window"; the status bar is
Taj (تاج, crown), the command palette is Dalil (دليل, guide) and the camera and
microphone watcher is Ayn (عين, eye). Five small executables, compiled ahead of
time, with no runtime to install first.
Layouts are a property of a container rather than of a workspace, so a fibonacci
region can sit inside a columns region with no special case. Available layouts are
splith, splitv, fibonacci, fibonacci-v, fibonacci-mirrored, master-left,
master-right, master-top, master-bottom, grid and monocle.
Configuration is one KDL file, shared by the window manager, the bar and the
palette, with diagnostics that point at the problem with a caret rather than a line
number. Mistakes that other window managers accept silently - a regex wrapped in
slashes that therefore never matched, a duplicate binding, a rule that would match
every window - are reported rather than ignored. Contexts layer overrides on the
config while a condition on the desktop holds: a presentation, a docked monitor, a
call with the microphone open.
Windows on inactive workspaces are cloaked rather than hidden, so they still report
as visible to Win32. If Shubbak exits, crashes or is killed, the next run adopts
them and brings them back.
