LLVM is a set of compiler and toolchain technologies that can be used to develop a frontend for any programming language and a backend for any instruction set architecture. LLVM is designed around a language-independent intermediate representation (IR) that serves as a portable, high-level assembly language that can be optimized with a variety of transformations over multiple passes. The name LLVM originally stood for Low Level Virtual Machine. However, the project has since expanded, and the name is no longer an acronym but an orphan initialism.
LLVM is written in C++ and is designed for compile-time, link-time, and runtime optimizing. Originally implemented for C and C++, the language-agnostic design of LLVM has since spawned a wide variety of frontends: languages with compilers that use LLVM (or which do not directly use LLVM but can generate compiled programs as LLVM IR) include ActionScript, Ada, C# for .NET, Common Lisp, Crystal, CUDA, D, Delphi, Dylan, Forth, Fortran, FreeBASIC, Free Pascal, Halide, Haskell, Idris, Jai (only for optimized release builds), JVM bytecode (Java), Julia, Kotlin, G (in LabVIEW), Objective-C, OpenCL, Odin, PicoLisp, PostgreSQL's SQL and PL/pgSQL, Ruby, Rust, Scala, Standard ML, Swift, Wolfram Language, Xojo, and Zig.
What is LLVM?
LLVM by LLVM (developed by Chris Lattner) is open-source Windows software in the languages & sdks category. It ranks 2nd by popularity among languages & sdks in this catalogue. The first release dates back to 2003. It is written in C++, C, and assembly language. Besides Windows, it is available for cross-platform, NetBSD, FreeBSD, OpenBSD and Linux.
Installation and requirements
The publisher provides MSI installers for 64-bit and ARM64 Windows. A silent install is possible with the installer’s documented switches. An MSI package is available for deployment with Group Policy, Intune or Configuration Manager.

Frequently asked questions
Is LLVM free?
Yes. LLVM is open-source software under the Apache-2.0 with LLVM Exceptions licence.
Is LLVM safe to download?
The download comes from github.com, which belongs to the publisher; ExeAtlas does not host or change the file. Compare its SHA256 hash with the one shown here, or open the VirusTotal report for that hash.
How do I install LLVM with winget?
Open PowerShell or Windows Terminal and run the winget command shown on this page. winget downloads the official installer and checks its SHA256 hash before running it.
Can LLVM be installed silently?
Yes. The silent install page lists the exact command for each installer, including msiexec for the MSI package.
Does LLVM run on ARM (Windows on Arm)?
Yes, there is a native ARM64 installer.
Where can I download an older version of LLVM?
The versions page lists all 77 versions with links to their official installer files, back to March 30, 2021.
What are alternatives to LLVM?
Go Programming Language, CMake, Deno, Ccache and Yarn. The alternatives page compares them.
