- **Adobe Flash (.swf) movies get thumbnails.** A Flash movie used to keep the plain file icon. SageThumbs now draws the movie from its own shapes, gradients and pictures, with no Flash Player and no script run. A movie that opens on a "loading" screen is shown as the first frame that has something on it, so the thumbnail is the movie's picture rather than an empty background. Text in a font the movie does not carry, and movies packed with LZMA, are not drawn yet. Thanks to TOM-PIC for the report and the sample (#70).
- **Add and remove dividers in Edit menu items.** Right-click a row in Settings Γû╕ Right-click menu Γû╕ Edit menu items for Add divider above, Add divider below and, on a divider, Remove divider. There was no way to add a divider before. The Check, Uncheck and Toggle selected entries, which did nothing a click on the tick box did not, are gone from that list's menu.
- **Edit menu items saves only on Done.** Cancel, Escape and the window's X now throw the edit away and put the list back the way it was when the window opened. In 3.9.0 the X saved everything, so there was no way to back out of a change.
- **One Reset in Edit menu items brings back the whole factory menu.** Reset order only put the rows back in order and left the ticks alone. Reset now restores the order, the ticks and the dividers, and like every other edit it takes effect on Done.
- **Edit menu items explains itself above the list.** The help text was a tooltip that followed the mouse over every row and the scrollbar; it is now a line of text above the list.
- **Store apps' icons stay as they are: no badge, no checkerboard, never blank.** Windows draws the icons of Store apps (Calculator, Notepad, Media Player and the like) on the taskbar, in Start and in Explorer, including the small file-type icon in a thumbnail's corner, by asking the PNG thumbnail handler for the app's logo, and SageThumbs is that handler. With the format badge or the checkerboard on, those icons got them too, and with SageThumbs' thumbnails switched off they could come out blank. SageThumbs now recognises an app's own icon and hands it back untouched, whatever its settings say.
- **Dragging a row in Edit menu items keeps the list where it was scrolled.** Every drop sent the list back to the top. It now stays put, and dragging to the top or bottom edge scrolls the list a row at a time.
- **A divider dragged beside another stays until Done.** A divider dropped next to another divider, or at the very top or bottom, vanished on the spot. It now stays while you edit, and Done tidies doubled dividers and dividers at either end.
- **Escape closes Edit menu items.** Escape did nothing; it now cancels like the X. During a drag it drops only the drag.
- **Settings comes back to the front when Edit menu items closes.** Closing the editor could leave another program in front instead of Settings.
- **The list in Edit menu items fills its window.** A selected row's highlight stopped well short of the scrollbar.

- **The format badge and checkerboard show on every file type** (fixes #66)
- **The format badge shows on long extensions, tiny pictures and cloud files**
- **A format badge picked during setup shows on thumbnails**
- **Explorer comes back after Rebuild thumbnail cache and Repair file associations** (fixes #68)
- **The desktop no longer flashes during setup**

- **HDR screenshots keep the screen's real brightness** (#67)
- **JPEG 2000 files with a far-off tile grid show their picture**

<details>
<summary><b>Read more: everything in 3.9.0</b></summary>

- **Screenshots save in HDR: PNG HDR and JPEG XR HDR.** Settings Γû╕ Screenshot files Γû╕ Save screenshots as now offers two HDR formats that keep an HDR monitor's full brightness and colour instead of the 8-bit picture: PNG HDR (16-bit, BT.2020 colours and the PQ curve, tagged as the new PNG standard describes) and JPEG XR HDR (the format Windows' Game Bar saves HDR screenshots in). Arrows, text and other marks keep the look they had in the editor. A capture from an ordinary screen saves in these formats too. Thanks to spider623 for the idea (#67).
- **Each divider in the right-click menu can be switched off.** Settings Γû╕ Right-click menu Γû╕ Edit menu items now has a tick box next to every divider line, as it has next to every item. Clear one and the menu draws no line there; the row keeps its place in the list, so it can be ticked again later. Thanks to justdeek on Discord for the idea.
- **Pick the checkerboard's colours.** Settings ▸ Appearance ▸ Checkerboard colours sets the two colours of the checkerboard behind see-through pictures: Automatic (the light squares, as before), Dark, so a white logo or icon stands out, or Custom…, which opens the Windows colour picker for each colour. The same colours draw the checkerboard in thumbnails, the right-click preview and Quick preview. Thanks to Geijoh for the idea (#69).
- **Done in Edit menu items applies the menu straight away.** Done (or closing the window) saves the list and the next right-click shows it. It used to only close the window, and the change waited for Settings' own Save. Thanks to justdeek on Discord.
- **Quick actions on the main menu leave the SageThumbs 2K submenu.** With "Show quick actions in the menu" on, Convert, Resize and Rotate now sit on the main right-click menu only, on both the Windows 11 menu and the classic one, instead of being listed a second time inside the SageThumbs 2K submenu. Thanks to justdeek on Discord for the idea.
- **Dragging rows in Edit menu items moves them.** Dragging an item or a divider in the list did nothing at all: the list sends its drag to the Settings window it was made in, and Settings only listened while the list was still its own child, which it stops being once the editor opens. Rows now move where they are dropped. Thanks to justdeek on Discord.
- **The custom action's switch shows whether its hotkey is on, and turns it off.** Settings Γû╕ Quick action opened with "Enable custom action" off even while a hotkey was bound, with the action and hotkey still live under it, so the hotkey kept running the action. The switch now opens o

- **Backup and template files name the right thumbnail source**

- **The File types list's Category column is in your language**
- **The File types list's How column no longer cuts off translated labels**

<details>
<summary><b>Read more: everything in 3.8.0</b></summary>

- **3MF files without a saved picture show their model.** A 3MF from a CAD program, or a bare model file, carries only the 3D model and no picture of it, so it got no thumbnail, or a texture or other stray image from inside the file. The model is now drawn, the same way STL files are, including the multi-part files Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer write. When the file does carry a slicer's picture, that picture is still what you see.
- **3D models no longer look see-through.** STL, OBJ and PLY thumbnails were drawn from below the model, and mirrored, so a solid print showed its underside and read as a hollow, see-through shell. They are now drawn from above and in front, the way a slicer shows them, with shading that follows the light, so a solid looks solid.
- **Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer 3MF files show their picture.** These slicers save their preview as the first plate's render rather than the `thumbnail.png` other slicers use. SageThumbs missed it and showed another image from the file, a nearly empty mask the slicer uses for clicking on objects, so the thumbnail came out blank and see-through. The plate's render is now shown.
- **Backup and template files name the right thumbnail source.** The Settings format list and `st2k formats` said Blender's auto-save backups (`.blend1` to `.blend32`), SketchUp backups (`.skb`), Photoshop `.psdt` and `.pdd` files and Affinity templates (`.aftemplate`) were fully decoded. Like the files they are copies of, they show the preview stored inside, and they now say so. The thumbnails themselves are unchanged.
- **The File types list shows every extension in full.** Its columns had fixed widths that did not grow with Windows display scaling, so at 150% or 200% the checkbox took up most of the Extension column and extensions were cut to `.ap…` or `b…`. Extensions now always show in full, in every language and at every scaling, and the other columns size themselves to what they hold. You can still drag the dividers, and double-clicking one fits that column to its contents.
- **The File types list's Category column is in your language.** It said Image, Ebook, Audio and so on in English whatever language SageThumbs was set to. It now follows your language in all 36 that SageThumbs speaks, and the search box above the list finds a format by its category in your language or in English.
- **The File types list's How column no longer cuts off translated labels.** In 24 languages some How labels ran up to three times as wide as the English ones, mostly the "(OS codec)" note on video rows, so they ended in "...". They now use the short forms each language's own software uses (OS, SO, ОС, 系统解码器 and so on), and every one fits.

## TL;DR

**🩹 Fixed**

- **No "PNG" mark on Store apps' icons**
- **A crafted zstd archive can't exhaust memory**
- **Right-click Upload asks first**
- **Online-only cloud files are never downloaded for a thumbnail**

<details>
<summary><b>Read more: everything in 3.7.4</b></summary>

- **No "PNG" mark on Store apps' icons.** With the corner set to the SageThumbs format mark, a file with no picture of its own showed its program's icon stamped "PNG" when that program came from the Microsoft Store: text and `.ini` files opened by Notepad, `.7z` archives opened by NanaZip, songs without cover art opened by Media Player. Windows draws those icons from a PNG inside the app, and SageThumbs marked that picture as if it were your file. Those icons now stay unmarked. Use Settings, Rebuild thumbnail cache once after updating to clear marks Windows already saved.

- **A crafted zstd archive can't exhaust memory.** A tiny zstd-compressed entry inside an archive could make the built-in zstd decoder ask for several gigabytes at once (RUSTSEC-2026-0344). The decoder is now 0.9.1, which caps each block's output, so such a file fails cleanly instead.

- **Right-click Upload asks first.** "Upload (copy link)" puts your files on a free public website, and it sits just under the Copy items, so one misread click shared a file. It now names the file (or says how many) and asks, with Cancel as the default, the way the Quick preview's Upload button already does. The extra hotkey set to Upload asks the same way; `st2k upload` on the command line does not.

- **Online-only cloud files are never downloaded for a thumbnail.** In a OneDrive, Synology Drive or other sync folder, a file marked to download when opened could be read, and so pulled down, just to draw its thumbnail. It is now left to the cloud app like every other online-only file.

- **Licence page in the installer.** It now says who needs a work licence (charities, schools and government offices stay free) and names one buy link. The app's Buy, Renew and move-licence links open the same public go.lunarwerx.com address the site uses.

- **Big Affinity files get thumbnails.** An Affinity document (`.af`, `.afphoto`, `.afdesign`, `.afpub`) over 256 MB showed no thumbnail, which is common for layered work brought over from Photoshop. Affinity stores its preview at the end of the file, so SageThumbs now reads just that part, however big the file is. The Quick preview of such a file works too.
- **Big DjVu books get thumbnails.** A multi-page DjVu file over 256 MB, such as a book scanned at high resolution, showed no thumbnail. SageThumbs now reads the book's page list and draws the first page alone, however long the book is. The Quick preview works too.

- **Quick preview has a taskbar button.** The Space-bar preview now shows on the taskbar and in Alt+Tab, so a preview that ends up behind another window, a playing video included, can be brought back with one click. Pressing Space in Explorer while the preview is hidden behind it, or minimized, brings the preview back instead of closing it unseen.
- **Comic covers: the back cover and variant covers no longer win.** With "Prefer a cover image" on (the default), a CBZ, CBR or CB7 whose pages included a back cover, a variant cover, a covers gallery or even a page named "Discovery" could show that page as its thumbnail, because any name containing "cover" won. Only a page named as the front cover leads now, and other covers go to the back, so the setting no longer has to be turned off for those books (which lost the cover on books whose cover is named `cover.jpg`).

**🩹 Fixed**

- **Every Windows account gets its own scheduled tasks**

<details>
<summary><b>Read more: everything in 3.7.1</b></summary>

- **Less for antivirus to flag while installing** (#14). Setup no longer does the things behaviour scanners, Kaspersky's among them, watch for: it registers its scheduled tasks directly instead of through `schtasks.exe` and a file in the temp folder, it no longer writes itself into the Windows Run list, and restarting Explorer no longer ends it with `taskkill` and deletes the thumbnail cache through `cmd`.
- **The background helper starts at sign-in from a scheduled task.** The small helper behind the screenshot hotkey and Space to preview used to start from the Windows Run list, which some security programs treat as suspicious and empty (Kaspersky did, #14). It now starts from your own task in Task Scheduler, so it no longer shows under Task Manager's Startup apps; switch it off in Settings or with **Quit** on its tray icon. Updating moves it over by itself.
- **Restarting File Explorer brings your folder windows back.** Setup's "Restart File Explorer" box and the **Rebuild thumbnail cache** button now ask Explorer to close and start again, the way installers do, instead of ending it, then reopen the folders you had open. No other program is closed.
- **Every Windows account gets its own scheduled tasks**, so on a shared PC a second account no longer misses out, and uninstalling removes them for every account, signed in or not.

- Convert, Resize and Rotate.
- Making a picture smaller to send.
- Copying and sharing.
- Combining files.
- Organizing them.
- Looking at a picture.
- Setting it as a wallpaper, lock screen or folder icon.
- **If you never rearranged the menu, you get the new order**, even if you pressed OK in Settings before. Older versions saved the order on every OK, so it never changed again and each new entry landed at the bottom. If you did rearrange it, your order stays, and new entries join their own group.
- **Compress to size** and **Save frame as image** can now be hidden and moved in Settings > Right-click menu > Edit menu items, like every other entry.
- **Save frame as image** shows only when the selection holds a video.
- **The screenshot editor can blur and crop.**
- **Blur** (`G`, beside Pixelate) softens a region. Its strength is a setting (Settings > Screenshots > *Blur strength*, 2 to 40 px, 12 by default). To hide text, Pixelate is still the safe choice, and the tooltip says so: a light blur can leave words readable.
- **Crop** (`X`) keeps the part you drag: the rest is shaded, Enter crops, Esc cancels, and Ctrl+Z brings the rest back. Copy, Save, Upload and Copy text (OCR) all use the cropped picture.
- **Screenshots save as PNG, JPEG or WebP, under a name you choose.** A new Settings page, **Screenshot files**, holds everything about the saved file: the format, its quality, the name, and the Ctrl+S folder (moved there from Screenshots). *Save screenshots as* picks the format: PNG stays the default, JPEG has its own quality setting and lays a transparent picture on white, and WebP keeps every pixel. *Screenshot file name* takes a template: `{yyyy}` `{MM}` `{dd}` `{HH}` `{mm}` `{ss}` `{ms}` for the capture's date and time, `{app}` for the program that was in front (or `Desktop`), and `/` or `\` for subfolders, which are created when needed. The default gives the same names as before. Characters Windows does not allow in a file name are left out, and a name Windows reserves (`CON`, `NUL`, …) gets a `_` in front. The editor's Save, Ctrl+S and the quick-save hotkey all follow both settings; Copy still puts a plain picture on the clipboard.
- **The right-click preview is drawn once on a scaled display** (fixes #61). At a display scale above 100%, Windows drew the preview tile a second time over the first, so its captions overlapped or were cut off and the size read "3 KB KB". SageThumbs now draws the tile itself, sized for the display's scale. As on PCs with a menu skin, the menu that holds the preview then uses the light classic style; Settings > Right-click menu > *Menu preview* can turn the preview off.
- **Copy text (OCR) reads a slashed zero as 0.** Windows' text recognizer reads the slashed zero some fonts draw as `├╕` or `├ÿ`. Inside a word that also has a digit in it (`1├╕24`, `ID-4├ÿ7`), it now comes out as `0`; a word with no digit (`S├╕ren`) keeps its letter.
- **Updating from inside the app installs, even while other programs are using Sa

- **Photoshop thumbnails no longer fill your temp folder** (fixes #56). Every PSD thumbnail could leave a copy of the file in `%TEMP%`, sometimes with hundreds of MB more beside it; one user's reached 100 GB. Each ImageMagick run now gets its own temp folder, deleted the moment the run ends. The files earlier versions left behind (ImageMagick's `magick-...` files over an hour old that nothing has open) are cleaned up after you install this version, and again whenever a thumbnail next needs ImageMagick.
- **Big Photoshop files get their thumbnails** (fixes #55). A thumbnail asked for the whole document at full size, so a large layered file could run out of time and show nothing, while Space, which allows longer, previewed it fine. A thumbnail now reads the picture at the size it shows.
- **PDFs with a few bytes before their header get thumbnails** (fixes #59). Some systems put bytes in front of a PDF's `%PDF-` header; every PDF reader opens such a file, Windows' own included, but SageThumbs looked for the header only at the very first byte.
- **You choose what double-clicking the tray icon does** (fixes #58): Settings > Advanced > **Double-click tray icon** takes a screenshot (still the default), opens Settings, or does nothing.
- **Send feedback asks you to promise you are not being a jerk.** Send stays greyed out until you tick the box. The email field is labelled just "Email (optional)" now.
- **Press Space to preview now works straight after installing.** Quick preview used to start off, so most people never found it. A new install turns it on, unless another Space-bar previewer (QuickLook or Seer) is already there, since two would fight over every press of Space. The welcome window still lets you switch it off, and an upgrade keeps your setting.
- **The Quick preview's Upload button no longer uploads on one click.** It is off until you turn on **Allow uploading from the preview** (Settings Γû╕ Quick preview); until then a click says why nothing happened and offers to open that page. Once it is on, it names the file and asks before every upload, with Cancel as the default answer.
- **With "Close when the preview loses focus" on, the preview's own dialogs no longer close it.** Saving a page, printing, or answering the Upload question used to count as clicking away, which closed the window and its dialog together.
- **The buttons on the "Keep these settings everywhere" banner have clean corners.** Each one showed a notch of the page colour at its corners against the banner's tint.
- **Settings text that was cut off in other languages now fits.** The screenshot hotkey's "Stopped" status on the Screenshots page was cut short in 12 languages, and a label too long for a 220-pixel box dropped onto its own line even with room to spare beside its field.
- **One more damaged JPEG XL file that could crash the thumbnail host no longer does.** A `.jxl` whose progressive passes leave part of the picture for no pass to decode stopped the JPEG XL decoder dead; it is now an ordinary decode error, so the file shows the normal icon and the files around it keep their thumbnails.
- **The Theme setting moved to Settings > Appearance**, under "SageThumbs windows". It was on the Quick preview page, which had grown past the bottom of the window.

## TL;DR

- **10-bit anime videos ("Hi10p") get thumbnails** (fixes #52)
- **Format marks are one size on every thumbnail, with sharp letters** (fixes #50), and stay clear of the film strip on widescreen videos (fixes #51)
- **The format mark stays visible after you change a file type's default program** (fixes #54)
- **7-Zip and RAR archives and comics with big pictures get thumbnails** (fixes #53)
- **DVD rips and other videos with non-square pixels show at their proper shape**
- **JPEG XL pages keep their text**, and CMYK JPEG XL images open
- **The Quick preview says why a video has no sound or picture** (fixes #49)

<details>
<summary><b>Read more: everything in 3.5.0</b></summary>

- **10-bit H.264 videos ("Hi10p", common for anime) now get thumbnails** (#52). Windows has no decoder for them, so SageThumbs decodes them itself.
- **Videos stored with non-square pixels show at their proper shape.** DVD rips and recordings stored at 720×480 or 720×576 are shown at 4:3 or 16:9, as players show them, instead of squeezed or stretched. Video thumbnails also no longer carry the thin band of padding some codecs store past the edge of the picture.
- **Format marks are the same size on every thumbnail, with smooth, sharp letters** (#50). The mark followed each picture's shape, so a square picture got twice the mark of a widescreen video frame or a book cover, and its letters turned jagged and blurry once Explorer resized the thumbnail.
- **On widescreen videos the format mark no longer hides under Explorer's film-strip border** (#51).
- **The format mark stays visible after you pick a new default program for a file type** (#54). A program such as Readest puts its own icon in that corner, and choosing it after SageThumbs was set up let the icon cover the mark.
- **7-Zip and RAR archives whose first picture is larger than 8 MB now get thumbnails** (#53), as zip and tar archives already did. That includes `.cb7` and `.cbr` comics with big scans.
- **JPEG XL thumbnails keep their text.** The reference encoder saves repeated letters in a screenshot or a lettered comic page once and stamps them into place, and the thumbnail skipped that step, so pages came out with most of their text missing and speech bubbles empty. It now draws them.
- **CMYK JPEG XL images get thumbnails.** They failed to open at all before.
- **Very tall JPEG XL images, such as webtoon strips, usually thumbnail about three times faster.**
- **The Quick preview now says why a video has no sound or no picture** (#49). Windows has no decoder for DTS sound at all, and HEVC, AV1 and VP9 video need extensions from the Microsoft Store, so such a video used to play in silence or show a still frame with no explanation. Codec packs such as K-Lite cannot fill the gap, because they plug into a different part of Windows than the one the preview plays through. The title bar now names what is missing, for example "No sound: DTS isn't supported by Windows".
- **At very high display scaling (500%), the welcome window's descriptions no longer lose their last line.**

## TL;DR

- **AVIF thumbnails can no longer freeze Explorer** or your taskbar icons, and no longer need a Store extension
- **Double-click the Quick preview to go full screen**
- **No more cut-off buttons or labels**, in any language or display scaling (fixes #48)

- **Olympus and Panasonic portrait photos show upright**
- **A damaged JPEG XL file can no longer crash the thumbnail host**

<details>
<summary><b>Read more: everything in 3.4.1</b></summary>

- **AVIF thumbnails can no longer freeze Explorer.** Asking for several AVIF thumbnails at once (opening a folder of them, or scrolling quickly) could hang Windows' thumbnail host for good, and with it every thumbnail and taskbar icon until you signed out. SageThumbs now reads AVIF with its own decoder instead of Windows' AV1 extension, in a separate helper process, so a damaged file cannot take Explorer down either. AVIF no longer needs the AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store, its colours no longer change when that extension updates itself, and a 12-megapixel AVIF thumbnails in about a fifth of a second.
- **Rename with pattern shows its Rename and Cancel buttons again** (fixes #48). The dialog was laid out for more room than its window left once the title bar was taken out, so the button row sat below the bottom edge with only a sliver showing. Every SageThumbs dialog now grows to fit its own buttons and fields, so none of them can cut a control off, at any display scaling or text size.
- **Buttons and labels no longer cut off in other languages.** A check that opens every window in all 36 languages at 100, 150 and 200% scaling found translated text clipped in a dozen places: the Screenshots and Right-click menu buttons in Settings, a Quick preview label, Sort into folders by tag, Files to folder, the Rename button, the Convert report's Open folder, Convert's watermark Opacity label, the Send feedback dialog and the About box. Those controls now size themselves to their text, and a long label moves above its field instead of being cut.
- **EXR and other HDR pictures no longer look dim.** A picture with nothing brighter than normal white (most EXR renders and conversions, and HDR photos without highlights) now shows at its true brightness instead of about three quarters of it, and in an HDR photo with bright highlights the brightest one is now pure white. HDR JPEG XL, AVIF, HEIC and TIFF files of an ordinary scene now look the same as their standard versions.
- **Olympus and Panasonic photos taken in portrait now show upright.** Their `.orf` and `.rw2` files mark the rotation the same way every other camera does, under a slightly different file header that SageThumbs did not recognise, so the rotation was ignored.
- **Double-click the Quick preview to go full screen.** Double-click a picture, a PDF page or a video to fill the screen, and double-click again (or press Esc) to go back. F11 still works once the preview has focus. Fit/100% zoom, which used to share the double-click, is on **Ctrl+0**.
- **The wrong installer now says which one to get.** Running the regular (x64) installer on a Windows on ARM PC, or the ARM64 one on a regular PC, already stopped before installing, but only named a processor type. It now tells you to download the other installer and where to find it.
- **A damaged JPEG XL file can no longer crash the thumbnail host.** The ways a broken `.jxl` could stop the JPEG XL decoder dead (a colour setting with no profile equivalent, an LF frame at the deepest level, smoothing asked for on subsampled colour) are now ordinary decode errors: the file shows the normal icon and the files around it keep their thumbnails.

<details>
<summary><b>Read more: everything in 3.4.0</b></summary>

- **Thumbnails in OneDrive, Synology Drive and other cloud folders.** Windows asks only the cloud app for a thumbnail of a file in a synced folder, even a fully downloaded one, so Paint.NET, Affinity, PSD and every other SageThumbs format showed a plain icon there (fixes #16). SageThumbs now takes its turn first for files that are on your PC and hands everything else, including online-only files, back to the cloud app; nothing is ever downloaded just to draw a thumbnail. On by default, with a switch in Settings > General, and `st2k doctor` now reports each cloud folder and whether it is linked.
- **Thumbnails no longer stop after a busy session.** When Explorer gave up on a slow file mid-decode, SageThumbs could lose one of its four ImageMagick slots for good; after a few of those every exotic-format thumbnail stalled, Explorer kept giving up, and only a restart brought them back. A slot whose owner is gone is now taken over at once.
- **Quick preview stays above the taskbar and remembers where you put it.** A tall picture no longer opens or grows underneath the taskbar, and the window opens where you last dragged it (double-click its title bar to go back to centred).
- **FreeCAD backups** (`.FCBak`, `.FCStd1`) get the same thumbnail as the `.FCStd` they were saved from (363 file types in all).
- **`st2k doctor` names the thumbnail handler Windows actually uses** for a file, and says when that handler belongs to another program or is built for a different processor than this PC (an x64-only DLL on an ARM64 PC, #47).
- **Searchable PDFs:** the new right-click **Combine into searchable PDF (OCR)**, `st2k pdf --searchable` and the MCP `pdf` tool's `searchable` option read every page with Windows' own OCR and add an invisible text layer, so scans and photos turned into a PDF can be searched, and their text selected and copied, in any PDF viewer. Pages OCR could not read still go in without text, and the CLI (`no text:` line) and JSON (`pages_without_text`) say how many.
- **Hardening.** The step every decoded picture goes through before it becomes a thumbnail or a preview (shrinking, enlarging, rotating, and the contact sheet for archives) is now fuzzed with images that are always valid, in every pixel format and shape, and checked for the right size and colour rather than only for crashes. The deep fuzz sessions now run every night instead of only before a release.

## What's changed

- **Twelve more file types get thumbnails (361 in all):** Valve game textures (`.vtf`) and Khronos KTX textures (`.ktx`), animated cursors (`.ani`), SIXEL terminal graphics (`.six`/`.sixel`), AVIF image sequences (`.avifs`), the preview AutoCAD and BricsCAD save inside a `.dxf`, XMind mind maps (`.xmind`), Visio templates and stencils (`.vstx`/`.vssx`), and the icon inside NuGet (`.nupkg`) and Visual Studio / VS Code (`.vsix`) packages. A DXF, stencil or package that carries no picture keeps its usual icon.
- **Big Photoshop files get a sharp picture everywhere.** A `.psd` or `.psb` over about 256 MB showed the small, blurry preview Photoshop saves inside it, in Explorer, the preview pane and Quick preview alike. SageThumbs now reads the full picture straight off the disk, only the parts it needs, so a document of any size is sharp; one saved with "Maximize compatibility" off is drawn from its layers. Reported in #46.
- **Very big files of many other types get their picture too.** Past about 256 MB, PDF and Illustrator files, EPS, older Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio and Publisher files, 3ds Max and SolidWorks files, RAR and 7-Zip archives and comics, 3D models (STL, OBJ, PLY), FITS images, JPEG 2000, and huge TIFF (BigTIFF included), PPM, PGM and TGA scans showed the plain icon, an empty preview pane or nothing in Quick preview. They are now read straight off the disk, only as far as the picture needs.
- **Windows Media Audio (`.wma`) files show their album cover in Explorer and the preview pane.** They share their container with Windows Media video and were taken for a video with no picture, so the cover never showed there, at any size.
- **FITS astronomy images show their stars.** SageThumbs reads them itself now, with the contrast stretch astronomy software uses, instead of drawing most of them nearly black, and a file that keeps its picture in a later section shows it too.
- **TIFF files with a colour profile keep their colours** when Windows' own decoder reads them, which it does for every TIFF past 256 MB; they came out slightly off.
- **Bundled ImageMagick updated to 7.1.2-31**, picking up fixes for the security issues published since 7.1.2-29, among them heap over-writes that crashed it on crafted files and several ways around its safety policy. It only ever runs as a separate, time-limited process.
- **Large DjVu pages need less memory** to thumbnail, from the updated DjVu decoder.
- **Smaller fixes:** an e-book whose cover image carries a lazy-loading placeholder shows the real cover; JPEGs with padding bytes before their camera data get their embedded thumbnail again; an empty `.ts` file opens as text in Quick preview instead of as a broken video; Redo with nothing to redo no longer stops Undo from bringing back a deleted annotation; and a file picked in Everything with a very long path is used whole instead of cut short.
- **Uploaded links now say when they expire.** Each free host deletes files on its own schedule, from 3 hours (uguu.se) to 3-100 days (x0.at), and a link never said which. The upload window now shows each link's expiry, and a new **Recent uploads** list (upload window, Settings > Screenshots, or the tray menu) keeps every link with the time it has left. `st2k upload` prints the expiry too, and `st2k upload-history` lists every link. Suggested by a user.
- **Closing the "Check for problems" window no longer closes Settings with it**, along with any change you had not saved yet.
- **3D scans in PLY format thumbnail correctly.** Binary PLY files that store a colour or a normal beside each point, which is what most 3D scanners and photogrammetry tools write, drew as a jumble of triangles; they now draw as the model. A binary PLY with a face of more than 64 corners (a cylinder's cap saved as one polygon) no longer loses

## What's changed

- **Uninstalling keeps Windows' thumbnail cache unless you ask.** Since 3.0.5 the uninstaller
cleared the whole cache at the next restart - every thumbnail on the machine, not only the
ones SageThumbs drew - and did so without asking, on unattended removals too. It now asks: a
box on the uninstall dialog, unticked by default, resets the cache; leaving it unticked keeps
everything as it is (thumbnails SageThumbs drew stay until those files change, and Windows'
Disk Cleanup can clear them any time). Unattended uninstalls never touch the cache; add
`/RESETTHUMBCACHE` to the uninstall command to opt in.
- **Adobe Illustrator files saved without "Create PDF Compatible File" no longer show a blank
page.** Such a file's PDF half is only a page of small print saying it was saved without PDF
content, and that page is what showed as a white tile with unreadable text. Files from
Illustrator CS4 and earlier carry a small picture of the artwork inside, and that is shown
now. Files from Illustrator 2020 and later carry no picture at all, so they get the
Illustrator icon instead, and `st2k doctor` says exactly why and how to re-save. Files saved
with the option ticked are unchanged. Reported in #45.
- **Photoshop EPS files saved with "Preview: None" now thumbnail.** Photoshop writes its
embedded thumbnail with a marker spelled one way and SageThumbs looked for another; the
first real such file showed the mismatch.
- **An Illustrator file with several artboards shows them all.** Up to four artboards are laid
out in one tile, the way a comic archive shows its first pages, instead of the first
artboard alone. Ordinary PDFs still show their first page. Requested in #44.
- **Settings, and every other SageThumbs window, no longer looks patchy in light mode.** The
window behind the controls was painted a slightly different grey from the controls
themselves, so each row, each label and the sidebar showed as a faint lighter block: obvious
on some displays and Windows themes, nearly invisible on others. Every window now uses one
background colour. Dark mode was not affected.
- **A greyed-out text box or drop-down in Settings now looks like one greyed-out field**, not a
grey slab inside a white outline, and the "Never preview these extensions:" caption greys
with its box while Quick preview is off.
- **The licence-key box on the Licence page gets the same rounded frame as every other field.**
It was a bare white strip beside a rounded button.
- **The hotkey service's status line on the Screenshots page ("Running", "Stopped") is now
translated** in all 36 languages; it was English everywhere.
- **Strip metadata no longer damages two kinds of file.** An SVG whose metadata quoted a
closing tag inside a CDATA block or a comment was cut short and saved malformed; it is now
handled correctly, and a rewrite that would not be valid XML is refused instead of saved. A
photo that relied on its EXIF rotation came out sideways after stripping; the rotation tag,
and nothing else, is now kept.
- **Convert, Resize and Strip can no longer overwrite another file through their temporary
file.** The temporary name was predictable; it is now unique and never reuses a file that
already exists.
- **Screenshot "Save as" can no longer wipe the file it was saving over.** Choosing a name
ending in `.jpg` emptied an existing picture and then reported a failure; the save now
writes a PNG to a temporary file first and only then replaces the destination, and the
dialog keeps the `.png` extension.
- **Quick Convert and Resize from the right-click menu now honour "Keep metadata"**, as the
Convert dialog always did. Shrink for email still produces a clean file.
- **Scitex `.sct` files convert and copy**, not only thumbnail.
- **Signing in to settings sync and then pressing Save no longer overwrites the s

<p align="center">Recorded TV and camcorder files that hold MPEG-2 get thumbnails without a paid Windows add-on, and the Appearance page of Settings stops showing things that did not belong on it.</p>

---

## What's changed

- **Recorded TV, set-top-box and camcorder video (`.ts`, `.m2ts`, `.mts`) no longer needs a
paid Windows add-on to show a thumbnail.** Those files usually hold H.264, which Windows
decodes on its own; when they hold MPEG-2 instead (most DVB and cable recordings, older
camcorders, anything captured from broadcast) Windows shows nothing unless Microsoft's
MPEG-2 Video Extension is installed from the Store. SageThumbs now reads those itself, the
same way it already read VideoCD `.mpg` and DVD `.vob`. Interlaced recordings, where each
frame is stored as two half-pictures, are the one kind still left to Windows.
- **Settings Γû╕ Appearance no longer looks half-rendered.** The muted price line that belongs at
the bottom of the Licence page was showing at the bottom of every Settings page, and the
greyed-out "Format mark size:" label drew with a struck-through look in dark mode. Both were
cosmetic; no setting was affected.

<p align="center">The JPEG XL crash behind issue #43 is fixed, sixteen more file types get thumbnails, and three formats that were listed but never worked on a real file now do.</p>

---

## What's changed

- **JPEG XL files made from JPEGs get their thumbnails back, and a right-click on one no
longer takes Explorer down.** A `.jxl` that `cjxl` made from a JPEG keeps the JPEG's colour
layout, and the fast thumbnail path mishandled that layout: no thumbnail in the folder, and
Explorer restarting when you right-clicked the file. Every phone photo converted with `cjxl`
has that layout, so this was most `.jxl` files people actually have. Reported in issue #43.
- **Twelve more file types get thumbnails**, including the two asked for through the feedback
form. Pixel art and sprites: **Aseprite** (`.aseprite`, `.ase`) is drawn by SageThumbs itself
from the layers inside it, the way the editor shows it on open (layer blending is drawn
plainly and tile-based layers are left out), and **Pixelorama** (`.pxo`)
shows the preview the app saves inside the file. **SpriteLoop** animation packages (`.spla`)
are drawn too, since the package holds only the separate body parts: you get the first frame
of its first animation, every piece in its place. 3D printing: **PrusaSlicer's new binary
G-code** (`.bgcode`) shows the same sliced preview the ordinary `.gcode` files already did.
CAD: **SolidWorks** parts, assemblies and drawings (`.sldprt`, `.sldasm`, `.slddrw`) show the
preview stored in the file, for the older save format that keeps one; files written by
SolidWorks 2015 and newer store no preview any other program can read, so those keep their
usual icon. And **Minecraft** worlds, packs and add-ons (`.mcworld`,
`.mctemplate`, `.mcpack`, `.mcaddon`) show the world photo or pack icon inside them.
- **Three formats that were listed but never worked on a real file now do.** Seattle FilmWorks
photos (`.sfw`, the 1990s "Pictures on Disk" floppies) and Alias/Wavefront `.pix` images are
decoded by SageThumbs itself now, and Scitex `.sct` files reach the right reader. Found by
feeding the test corpus real files from other programs for every format it lists.
- **Old MPEG videos get thumbnails, with nothing to install.** The `.mpg` and `.mpeg` files a
VideoCD or a late-1990s camera wrote, raw MPEG video files (`.m1v`, `.m2v`) and DVD `.vob`
files are all drawn by SageThumbs itself now, in a separate short-lived process like its
Flash and HDR video decoders. Windows cannot open the first three at all, and asks for a
Store add-on before it will open a `.vob`; neither is needed any more. `.m1v` is a new file
type, and so are `.mpv`, `.mp2v` and `.m2p`, three more names the same old MPEG files are
saved under by DVD and capture tools. Recordings that hold MPEG-2 video inside a transport
stream or a Matroska file still use Windows' own decoder, so that add-on still matters there.
- **Brother embroidery files (`.pes`) no longer claim a thumbnail they never produced.** The
listing promised one, but drawing those stitches needs a graphics library this app
deliberately does not ship, so every install has always shown the ordinary file icon for
them. The claim is gone; nothing that used to draw stopped drawing.
- For the few installations that need a business licence: the Licence page has been tidied
up, and there is now a monthly plan, US$2.99 per computer, alongside the one-time US$49.
Personal use is unaffected and stays free.

<p align="center">Two fixes for what people saw on their own desktop, and one better default: small pictures are no longer blown up to fill their tile, uninstalling no longer leaves SageThumbs' thumbnails behind, and comic covers skip scanlation credit pages without being asked.</p>

---

## What's changed

- **Small pictures are shown at their real size, as Windows shows them.** A picture smaller
than its thumbnail tile used to be enlarged to fill the tile, so a folder or a desktop of
small PNGs, GIFs and BMPs looked blocky or soft next to the way Windows had drawn them. It
now sits at its own size in the middle of the tile, exactly like Windows' own thumbnails.
A file that only carries a small preview of a much larger picture (a Photoshop document, a
book's cover) still fills the tile, and icon files still scale to it.
- **Uninstalling now clears Windows' thumbnail cache at the next restart.** Windows keeps every
thumbnail SageThumbs drew for as long as the file is unchanged, so after an uninstall the
desktop and every folder kept showing them. They are removed at the next sign-in and Windows
draws its own again.
- **Comic covers skip scanlation credit pages by default.** A comic archive whose first page
is a scanlation group's credits or logo now shows its real cover without anyone having to
find the switch first. It was one of the offers on the welcome window's second page; that
page is down to the two that genuinely are a matter of taste (film cover art, the file-type
badge), and the switch itself stays in Settings, Ebook/comic, for anyone who wants the
first page as stored.

<p align="center">Two fixes for bugs people reported: iPhone ProRAW photos thumbnail in colour again, and Convert no longer quietly writes a tiny file when it is given a very large picture.</p>

---

## What's changed

- **iPhone ProRAW photos thumbnail in colour again instead of a grey wash**
([#42](https://github.com/LunarWerxs/SageThumbs-2k/issues/42)). A ProRAW `.DNG` stores two
pictures one after the other: the colour preview, and Apple's HDR gain map, which is a
black-and-white helper image. Whichever of the two was larger used to win, so most of a
folder of photographs could come out as bright grey pictures while the rest looked fine.
The colour picture is now always preferred, and a camera that really does shoot in black
and white still thumbnails from its own preview.
- **Converting a very large picture no longer writes a tiny one**
([#41](https://github.com/LunarWerxs/SageThumbs-2k/issues/41)). Above a size that depended
on how fast the computer was, Convert and Resize gave up on the picture after 20 seconds and
quietly used the small preview stored inside the file instead, so a 45-megapixel photo asked
to fit 1920x1080 was written out at 107x160 and reported as done. A conversion you asked for
now gets the time a file that size needs, and if only a small stand-in preview can be read,
the file is listed as failed with both sizes named rather than written out.
- For the few installations set up for business use: a copy with no licence key now evaluates
for 7 days and then asks for one. Personal use is unaffected.

<p align="center">The HDR fix from 3.0.2 now covers every format that can carry an HDR picture, the doctor explains two more reasons a thumbnail can go missing, and the right-click preview tile is back on its strict size guard.</p>

---

## What's changed

- **HDR HEIC, JPEG XR and TIFF thumbnails render at the right brightness.** The 3.0.2 fix for
HDR AVIF now has a proven twin for every container that can carry an HDR picture: an HDR
HEIC (PQ or HLG) takes the same path as AVIF, a linear-float JPEG XR (what Windows writes
for an HDR screenshot) is tone-mapped instead of clipped to white, and a 16-bit TIFF tagged
with a PQ profile is converted through the profile's own HDR signal rather than
colour-managed into near-black. The TIFF fix also reads a profile the decoder used to drop.
- **AVIF files with no colour box take the fast path when the codec measures right**, instead
of always going through the bundled ImageMagick, and an AVIF with a gain map or an alpha
plane is read by its main picture rather than by whichever colour box came first.
- **The right-click menu's preview tile keeps the strict size guard.** The tile that is
drawn inside Explorer itself had, since a refactor, been allowed the wider ceiling meant
for the isolated thumbnail host; it is back on the strict one, and the test that guards it
now actually reaches the codec.
- **The doctor names two more causes of a missing thumbnail.** A folder added to This PC by a
tweaker is reported, machine-wide and for the probed file (files browsed through such an
entry may never show a picture; open the real folder instead), and the per-file section now
says whether Explorer ever asked SageThumbs for that file at all, read off the diagnostics
log, so "it never reached us" no longer needs a developer to read the log by hand.

## What's changed

- **The Licence page says which licence you have.** With a business key active it now reads
"Business licence" at the top, names the key, and says the licence is active; on a Personal
install without one it reads "Personal licence". Previously a Personal install that redeemed a
business key still said "installed for personal use" beside a green "licence is active".
Redeeming a key now answers with a pop-up, "Your business licence is active", or a clear
warning when the key is refused or the licence service cannot be reached.

- **A revoked licence shows as revoked straight away.** When the licence holder takes a
computer's seat back, Check now says so and the page shows the revocation, instead of reading
"active" for up to a week or, on a Personal install, hiding it behind "no licence needed".

- Licensed installations now see when their updates window ends, and can renew for another
12 months from Settings > Licence.

- **HDR AVIF thumbnails no longer come out blown out**
([#39](https://github.com/LunarWerxs/SageThumbs-2k/issues/39)). An AVIF whose base image is
HDR (PQ transfer, BT.2020 primaries, the same shape as the JPEG XL fixed in 3.0.1) rendered
as a bleached picture with every bright area clipped to white: Windows' own AV1 decoder hands
an HDR picture back as linear light, and everything brighter than 80 nits was being cut off
on the way to 8 bits. Where the bundled ImageMagick decoded the file instead, the raw PQ
signal was shown as if it were sRGB, so the same picture came out dark and flat. Both now go
through the conversion and tone map an HDR PNG, JPEG XL or EXR does, HDR HEIC included. The
SDR twin of the same picture is unchanged.

## What's changed

The first update after 3.0. Three things, all from user reports in the days after the release,
plus a tighter signing gate. If you are still on 2.x, the "What 3.0 brought" list at the end of
these notes is the reason to update.

### New

- **A size for the format mark in a thumbnail's corner.** Settings > Appearance > "Format mark
size": Small (the original), Medium or Large. A designer with folders of near-identical
previews asked for it, because the mark is how you tell a PSD from its JPG at a glance and
the original was too small to read. The mark scales with the tile, so Large stays readable
in every Explorer view.

### Fixed

- **The doctor says whether Explorer draws program icons on thumbnails at all.** A new
"ShowTypeOverlay" line under Windows thumbnail settings reads Explorer's "Display file icon
on thumbnails" switch and warns when it is off, because with it off no thumbnail gets a
corner icon, ours or Windows' own, and the corner setting "Windows' file-type icon" reads as
broken while every other line is green.

- **The per-file doctor report names the drive.** `st2k doctor <file>` now prints a "Volume"
line: whether the drive is fixed, removable, network, optical or a RAM disk, its file system,
and the device behind the letter, so a substituted (`subst`) or per-session drive, which
Explorer's thumbnail helper may not see at all, is called out instead of leaving a green
report next to a folder full of icons.

- **HDR JPEG XL files thumbnailed almost black**
([#38](https://github.com/LunarWerxs/SageThumbs-2k/issues/38)). A `.jxl` whose base image is
HDR (PQ transfer, BT.2020 primaries, the shape Google's Ultra HDR samples and Adobe's gain-map
exports use) decoded to samples that still carried the PQ curve, and colour management then
treated 10,000 nits as white, so a picture whose real white sits at 203 nits came out at a
fiftieth of its brightness. An HDR `.jxl` now goes through the same conversion and tone map
an HDR PNG or an EXR does. The SDR twin of the same picture was always fine and is unchanged.

### Changed

- **Nothing ships unsigned, and the pipeline now proves it.** Every executable and library we
build, including the three ImageMagick shim libraries the bundle carries, is signed by
LUNARWERX LLC before the installer, the portable zip and the Windows 11 menu package pick them
up, and the release run refuses to publish if any shipped binary or installer fails
signature verification.

### What 3.0 brought

For anyone updating from 2.x, the headlines of 3.0.0 (the full list is in that section below):

- **Code-signed installers and packages** from LUNARWERX LLC, so SmartScreen and antivirus
warnings on a fresh download fade with the file's age instead of never.
- **Rename with pattern**, **Set as lock screen**, **Copy as data URI**, **Sort into folders by
date taken**, and Fill / Fit / Span wallpaper placements in the right-click menu.
- **Watermarks in the Convert dialog**, and conversions to AVIF, JPEG XL and the other
ImageMagick-encoded formats keep their metadata.
- **Quick preview gains**: a hex view for files nothing else can render, folder sizes, printing
(Ctrl+P), a Save button for the current PDF page, animation frame or video frame, a
per-extension blocklist, keyboard-reachable toolbars, and script-file highlighting.
- **HDR PNGs render correctly**, AVIF colours are back after September's Windows codec change,
and Canon CRW thumbnails are fast again.
- **The program's icon is back in the corner of Photoshop, Illustrator and other editor
files** when the corner is set to Windows' file-type icon.
- **A per-file doctor** (`st2k doctor <file>`) that names the program, policy or sync client
standing between a file and its thumbnail, and a diagnostics bundle safe to hand to anyone.
- **A Licence page** for business seat keys, an installer question about personal or business
use, settings export and import from the command line, and signature-checked self-updates.
- **Portable copies

## What's changed

### Added

- **A "Join our Discord" button on the sign-in banner.** Questions, ideas, or a hello: the
LunarWerx Discord is where we are. The button opens a LunarWerx page that forwards to the
current invite, so the link in the app never goes stale.
- **Save the video frame you are looking at.** The Quick preview's Save button now works on a
video and writes the frame at the current position, and a right-click on a video-only selection
offers "Save frame as image" instead of the picture verbs that never applied to it.
- **Screen readers can use the Settings window.** Every category in the left-hand rail now
reports its name and which one is selected, so Narrator and NVDA announce where you are.
- **A hex view for files nothing can render.** An unknown binary shows a classic hex dump
instead of a bare info card, truncated with a note rather than trying to read the whole file.
- **Folders show their total size** in the Quick preview, and say "more than" instead of a wrong
number when the folder is too large or too deep to finish counting quickly.
- **A per-extension Quick preview blocklist** on the Quick preview settings page: list the
extensions you never want previewed. Empty by default, and separate from the File types page.
- **Pressing Space on something that is not a file now says so.** Recycle Bin, This PC and other
virtual items used to do nothing at all.
- **HDR PNGs render correctly.** A PNG carrying the `cICP` colour chunk with a PQ or
HLG transfer (what recent HDR tools write) is now converted to linear light and
tone-mapped the way EXR and Radiance files already are, instead of being shown as a
washed-out picture with the wrong curve. Ordinary PNGs are untouched.
- **Rename with pattern.** A new entry in the Rename submenu opens a small dialog: type a
pattern such as `{name}_{n:3}` (placeholders for the name, extension, a padded counter,
the capture date and the pixel size), optionally find and replace text, watch the live
preview, and rename the selection in one go. Nothing is ever overwritten.
- **Set as lock screen**, beside "Set as wallpaper", for any format SageThumbs can decode.
- **`st2k upload <file>`** uploads through the same hosts the screenshot editor uses and prints
the URL (`--copy` also puts it on the clipboard).
- **The Quick preview's toolbars are keyboard-reachable.** Tab moves into the caption
toolbar and the video controls, arrows move along them, Enter or Space presses, Escape
returns to the content; the focused button shows a ring.
- **Print from the Quick preview.** A print button on the caption toolbar (or **Ctrl+P**)
sends the image, the PDF page or the animation frame you are looking at to the standard
Windows print dialog, fitted to the page.
- **Watermark in the Convert dialog.** Tick "Watermark", choose an image, and pick a corner
(or the centre), a size as a percentage of the picture and an opacity; it is applied after
the resize and before the encode, for every output format including the ImageMagick ones.
- **Three more wallpaper placements: Fill, Fit and Span**, alongside the existing Stretch,
Tile and Center, in the "Set as wallpaper" menu.
- **Sort by date taken.** A new "Sort into folders Γû╕ By date taken" verb moves each selected
image into a `YYYY-MM-DD` folder named from its EXIF capture date; a file with no capture
date is left where it is.
- **Copy as data URI.** A new "Copy as data URI" verb base64-encodes the selected image and
copies a `data:<mime>;base64,...` URI to the clipboard as text, ready to paste into CSS,
HTML or JSON.
- **Retry only the files that failed, from the command line or from the failure report.** After
a batch that only partly succeeded, `st2k batch --retry-from report.json` re-runs exactly the
files a saved `--json` report lists as failed, with whatever options you give it, and reports
the retry the same way so a second retry can follow on. In the app, the Convert dialog's
failure report now has a "Retry failed" button that runs thos

## What's changed

### Added

- **A sign-in suggestion in Settings.** If you have had SageThumbs a week and used it a few times,
opening Settings may show a small card explaining that signing in with a Connections account
carries your settings to your other machines. Dismissing it with **"Not now"** hides it for the
rest of the day; from the fourth time you see it, a **"Remind me in a month"** button appears
beside that, and you can pick it as often as you like. It never appears more than once a day, it
only ever appears as Settings opens rather than interrupting what you are doing, closing the
window counts the same as "Not now", and it is translated into all 36 languages SageThumbs
speaks. Nothing about it changes how thumbnails work, and signing in remains entirely optional:
every feature works exactly the same without an account.

### Changed

- **You now choose what goes in the corner of a thumbnail, and setup asks you once.** Only one
thing fits in a thumbnail's bottom-right corner, and until now two separate tick boxes were
quietly fighting over it: turning on the format badge without also finding the second box let
Windows stamp the associated program's icon straight on top of it. Those two boxes are gone,
replaced by a single choice on the Appearance page, and the installer asks it on a first
install: **Windows' file-type icon** (what Explorer does on its own, and still the default),
**a SageThumbs format mark** (PSD, JXL, AVIF... so you can tell formats apart at a glance), or
**nothing at all**. Upgrading keeps whatever your old tick boxes were set to, and you can
change it any time in Settings.

### Fixed

- **More EPS files show a thumbnail.** An EPS can carry a small built-in preview picture, and
SageThumbs reads that rather than running the PostScript. It was being thrown away whenever the
file had a blank line just after it, which some programs write and others don't, so whether your
EPS files worked came down to which program made them. Note that an EPS saved with **no**
preview at all still cannot be shown: drawing one would mean running the PostScript, which
SageThumbs deliberately never does. If your EPS files show nothing, re-save them with the
"include preview" option ticked.

- **Quick preview button tooltips no longer describe the state you just left.** The light/dark
button showed a moon while its tooltip still read "Light background", and it stayed wrong for
as long as the window was open, because a tooltip's text was only ever set once when the window
opened. Every tooltip now updates with the button it belongs to. Four more that had the same
problem were fixed at the same time: the pin now offers to stop keeping the window on top once
it is pinned, view-source offers the rendered view once you are looking at source, and mute and
repeat both say what clicking them will actually do.

- **A plain-text email no longer writes itself into the preview's contents list.** A line in a
message starting with `#` was being read as a document heading, so it showed up huge and added
itself to the outline down the side of the window. That line now shows as the text it is.
Quoted reply text and numbered lists still render properly, because there they really are what
they look like.

## What's changed

### Fixed

- **An email that has been copied around now still previews as an email.** Some tools rewrite
line endings when they copy a file, which doubles the invisible marker that separates an
email's headers from its message. SageThumbs was strict about that marker, so a mail that had
been through such a tool opened as raw source text instead of as a message. It now reads
either form.

## What's changed

### Added

- **Email files preview.** Press Space on an exported email, an `.eml` from almost any mail
program or an Outlook `.msg`, and it opens like a message: subject, from, to, date, the
list of attachment names, and the text of the mail. Attachments are listed, never opened,
and nothing in the message is fetched from the internet. Web addresses in a message show
exactly as written, so a link can't pretend to be something it isn't.

- **3D-print model thumbnails and preview (STL, OBJ, PLY).** These files carry no picture
inside them, so SageThumbs draws one: the model, shaded, from a consistent three-quarter
angle, with a transparent background in Explorer like any other thumbnail. A folder of
models becomes scannable at a glance instead of a wall of identical icons. Works in the
Space-bar preview too, at full window size.

- **Click a window to capture it.** In the screenshot tool, hovering now highlights the
window under the cursor; a single click captures exactly that window, cleanly at its
visible edges. Dragging a region works exactly as before. Works in the one-key OCR mode
too: click a dialog to read the text out of it.

- **A capture delay.** Settings Γû╕ Screenshots gains "Delay before capture" (off, 1, 2, 3 or
5 seconds): press the hotkey, and a small countdown ticks beside the cursor before the
screen freezes: long enough to open the menu or summon the tooltip you actually wanted
in the picture. Esc during the countdown cancels.

- **The colour picker learned formats and memory.** Tab switches what a pick copies:
#RRGGBB, rgb(), hsl() or hsv(), shown live on the loupe, and the choice is remembered.
Your last ten picks appear as a swatch row; pressing 1ΓÇô9 copies one of them again, so
yesterday's brand colour is a keypress, not a hunt for a pixel that still shows it.

- **Screenshot OCR keeps table columns.** When the text in a capture lines up as a table,
a price list, a bank statement, an Explorer details view, the copied text now uses tabs
between the columns, so pasting into Excel puts every cell where it belongs. Ordinary
text is completely unaffected; the detection only trusts a column it sees on three or
more lines.

- **A light/dark button on the Quick preview window itself.** The Theme setting decides what
every preview opens as; this switches the one you are looking at, without changing that
setting or any other window. A dark photograph often reads better on a dark background even
when you keep the rest of the app light, and the reverse is true of a scanned page. The button
shows the background it will give you: a sun while you are dark, a moon while you are light.
The choice lasts until you close the window, so the next preview opens the way you
configured it. Requested by a user, who is the reason it exists.

- **A settings button on the Quick preview window.** The gear opens Settings directly on its
Quick preview page, instead of leaving you to find the window and then the right page in it.
If Settings is already open on another page, it comes to the front on the right one.

### Fixed

- **The Quick preview toolbar's tooltips could describe the button next door.** On any picture,
the tooltips sat one button to the right of where they belonged: hovering "Copy file path"
said "Keep on top", and the pin at the far left had no tooltip at all. The toolbar gains its
text-recognition button only once the picture has finished loading, and the tooltips were
positioned before that happened and never moved afterwards. They are now placed from the same
layout the toolbar is drawn from, so they cannot describe a different button than the one
under the pointer.

- **The Quick preview toolbar icons were noticeably different sizes.** They came from a set that
draws each icon to its own proportions, so a circle filled its space while a cross sat well
inside its own, a 50% difference across one row. The bundled icons are now sized to match
each other. The text-recognition icon was the worst of the

## What's changed

### Added

- **Ctrl+F now searches inside a multi-page PDF in the Quick preview.** Type a word and the
viewer jumps to the page it is on; Enter or F3 walks through the rest, and the bar counts them
the way it already does for text files. Windows' PDF engine hands us pictures of pages and no
text at all, so SageThumbs reads the words off the rendered pages itself, using the text
recognition Windows already ships. Nothing new is downloaded or installed for it.

Reading a long document takes a moment, so the bar says how far it has got: matches appear as
their pages are read rather than after a silent wait, and a document longer than 200 pages
keeps showing how many of its pages were actually searched instead of pretending it read all
of them. If the machine has no text recognition available at all, it says so rather than
reporting an empty result. Matches are shown by jumping to the page, not by highlighting the
word on it.

- **A page-thumbnail strip beside multi-page PDFs in the Quick preview.** Small pictures of
every page run down the right-hand side, numbered, with the page you are reading outlined.
Click one to jump straight to it. It appears only for documents with more than one page, hides
itself on a narrow window where the room is better spent on the page itself, and can be turned
off. Thumbnails are drawn as they come into view and kept small, so a long document does not
pay for pages you never look at.

### Fixed

- **The mouse wheel did nothing on a PDF in the Quick preview.** Continuous scrolling shipped in
2.3.1 with the keyboard working and the wheel not: rolling it over a PDF was silently ignored,
even though the 2.3.1 notes said it scrolled. It scrolls now. Ctrl and the wheel magnifies,
and Shift and the wheel slides a magnified page sideways.

- **Zooming a PDF now redraws it sharply instead of blowing up the picture.** Magnifying used to
stretch the page image it had already drawn, so text went soft exactly when you were zooming
in to read it. Pages are now redrawn at the size you are viewing them at, so they stay crisp.

- **Converting or resizing some camera RAW files gave you the camera's small preview instead of
the photograph.** A Mamiya `.mef` came out **192x144** and a Phase One `.iiq` **304x220**,
when the real pictures are 4016x5344 and 3658x2740. These formats hide the real photo where
the usual decoder cannot see it without knowing the file's name, so SageThumbs was silently
handing you the thumbnail. Convert and Resize now re-read those files at their full native
resolution - the `.mef` really does come out 4016x5344. Thumbnails were always correct and
are unchanged, pixel for pixel, and still just as fast. Formats that were already converting
correctly keep their quick path, so nothing else got slower.

### Added

- **Light or dark is now SageThumbs' own setting, on the Quick preview page.** Until now the
preview and the Settings window followed Windows' app colour setting, so wanting a dark
preview on an otherwise light desktop meant changing the whole system. There is now a
"Theme" choice with Follow Windows, Light and Dark. Follow Windows is the default and is
exactly what every earlier version did, so nothing changes unless you pick something. The
Explorer right-click menu and the preview pane still follow Windows on purpose: those are
drawn inside Explorer's own window, and disagreeing with the shell around them would look
broken rather than themed. Suggested by a user.

### Changed

- **Installing is quicker at the "Registering the modern context menu" step.** That step
unregistered the existing Windows 11 menu package and registered it again from scratch every
single time, which is two deployments where one will do, and it is the step people saw the
installer appear to hang on. It now registers directly and only falls back to the remove and
retry when that fails, and it skips re-importing the signing certificate when the same one is
already trusted. Measured at **1,162 m

## What's changed

### Fixed

- **Wide-gamut JPEG photos could thumbnail in the wrong colours.** A photo saved in AdobeRGB or
Display P3 carries a colour profile describing how its numbers should be read. On the faster
decoding path Windows does not hand that profile over, so the numbers were used as-is and the
thumbnail came out visibly off - most likely on camera photos, which are exactly the files
that tend to be wide-gamut. SageThumbs now reads the profile out of the file itself. Every
other viewer already showed these correctly, so only the thumbnail was wrong.

### Improved

- **Large JPEG XL images thumbnail about 70x faster.** A 12-megapixel .jxl took over a second
and a half; it now takes about a fortieth of that. JPEG XL stores a small version of the
picture inside the file, ahead of all the fine detail, and the decoder was building the whole
full-size image anyway before shrinking it down. It now stops at the small one when a
thumbnail is all that was asked for. Nothing about the picture changes that you could see -
it matches a full decode to within about four levels out of 255 - and small images, or ones
where the small version would be too coarse, still decode in full. Lossless .jxl files are
unaffected, as they do not carry that small version.

- **DDS / DXT game textures thumbnail about 5x faster.** A large compressed texture used to be
unpacked in full, pixel by pixel, just to work out the average colour of each little block.
Two changes removed that work: the thumbnail is now built a block at a time instead of
assembling the whole surface first, and each block's average is worked out directly from the
block's own endpoints rather than by expanding its sixteen texels. Together they take a
12-megapixel texture from about 180 ms to about 33 ms. The picture is not merely similar but
identical, which is checked automatically against the old method on tens of thousands of
blocks.

- **The command line tool, the AI tools and the right-click preview now produce the same
quality picture as Explorer's thumbnails.** They had been using a cheaper, slightly softer
way of shrinking images than the thumbnails themselves. They all share the better one now, so
a preview looks the same wherever you see it. Image sizes are unchanged.

- **AVIF thumbnails are dramatically faster - now across every common variant.** A user told us (fairly) that our AVIF was much
slower than Windows' own thumbnails. Two causes, both fixed. First, the AVIF path was
rendering a full-size image and then shrinking it, throwing nearly all the work away; it now
renders straight to the size the thumbnail needs. Second, 10- and 12-bit AVIF (most HDR and
camera output) was taking an expensive detour to keep its colours correct; the colour error
it was avoiding turns out to be exactly reversible, so those files now decode on the fast
path and get corrected in place. The net effect on a 6-megapixel 10-bit AVIF: about fifty
times faster than 2.2.0, with slightly MORE accurate colour.

The last slow case fell too: 8-bit AVIF carrying the colour signalling that `avifenc` and
`ffmpeg` write by default (which Windows' own decoder pipeline misreads, and which we
therefore used to hand to a slower external decoder to keep colours right). Those files now
decode through Windows' AV1 decoder directly while SageThumbs applies the correct colour
conversion itself: same accurate colour, roughly 10-40x faster depending on size. Only an
AVIF with no colour information at all still takes the careful slow path.

- **Large images thumbnail much faster.** Two formats were doing far more work than the picture
needed: a 12-megapixel AVIF took about 180 ms and a 12-megapixel BMP about 259 ms, against
Windows' own 65 ms and 22 ms. Both now do only the work the thumbnail size actually requires -
**AVIF is down to ~39 ms and BMP to ~20 ms**, which makes both faster than or equal to Windows.
Colours are unchanged.

- **JPEG photos thumbnail up to 20x faster.** SageThumbs can ask the

## What's changed

### Fixed

- **A handful of registered formats could never show a thumbnail, on any version.**
Wavefront RLA, PlayStation TIM, MacPaint, Dr Halo CUT, Alias PIX, Garmin JNX and ZX Spectrum
SCREEN$ were all listed as supported and none of them ever worked.

The reason is the same for all of them. Most image formats begin with a few bytes that
identify them, so a decoder handed anonymous bytes can work out what it is looking at. These
formats do not. The only thing that says what they are is the file name, and the stage of our
pipeline that handles the obscure long tail was being given the bytes without the name, so it
always answered "I do not recognise this". Camera RAW files were caught by the same wall
whenever the camera had not stored a preview picture inside the file, which is why the
Minolta test file produced nothing at all.

When every other stage has already given up, that stage is now told the file's name too. All
seven formats decode, and a Minolta RAW with no built-in preview now gets a thumbnail
developed from the sensor data instead of nothing.

Formats that identify themselves are deliberately left alone, so nothing that worked before
can be pushed down a different path by a misleading file name.

- **Layered GIMP files lost their upper layers, and some stopped showing a thumbnail at all.**
Reported on 2026-08-17 as "xcf don't work anymore with new versions for big files", and that
is exactly what was happening.

2.0.0 added a limit on how much layer data a `.xcf` may be worth decoding, so that a
deliberately malformed file cannot claim thousands of full-size layers and tie up your
machine drawing them. The limit was sound. The order it was spent in was not: layers were
paid for from the bottom of the stack upward, so a file with more layers than the allowance
covers spent everything on the layers underneath and then quietly skipped the ones on top,
the only ones you can actually see. The thumbnail that came out looked completely normal and
was a picture of a half-finished image.

How big is "big"? Any file whose layers add up to more than a 16384 x 16384 image: twelve
full-canvas layers of a 6000 x 4000 picture, twenty-three of a 4000 x 3000 one, or just two
layers of a 12000 x 12000 canvas. Where the lower layers happened to be transparent (an
erased background, an empty base), everything drawn was invisible, the result was a blank
image, and the file fell back to the plain document icon. That is the "no thumbnail" half of
the report.

Layers are now paid for from the top down, so a file too big for the allowance gives up the
layers underneath whatever is covering them instead of the ones on top. Hidden layers, fully
transparent ones and layers parked off the edge of the canvas are no longer charged at all.
They cannot change the picture, so they now cost nothing, which leaves the whole allowance
for layers that are actually visible. Large layered files are also faster as a result: a
12000 x 12000 two-layer file went from 11.8 to 5.4 seconds, and now shows the right image.

- **GIMP files over 256 MB now get a thumbnail. They never have before, on any version.**

There was a ceiling on how much of a file we will read into memory at once, and a `.xcf`
past it was simply refused. Most formats have a way around that: a photo has a small preview
baked into its header, and Windows can open a huge PNG or TIFF itself and shrink it while it
reads. A GIMP file has neither. It stores no preview at all, and Windows has no idea what an
`.xcf` is, so every one of those escape routes declined and the file kept the plain document
icon. Layered artwork is exactly the kind of file that gets that big, so this hit the people
most likely to have installed SageThumbs for GIMP support in the first place.

It now reads a `.xcf` the way the format is actually built: as a map of positions, jumping
to the layers it needs and pulling one 64-pixel tile at a time, so nothing is ever held in
memory but the piece being loo

- **"Build thumbnails here" only ever pre-built the smallest icon size.** It prepares three
sizes, one for each of Explorer's Medium, Large and Extra-large views. It turns out Windows
renders only the **first** size it is asked for and fills the other two in from that one, and
we asked for the smallest first. So the two larger views were being filled from a 96-pixel
picture, which Windows then threw away and rebuilt from scratch the first time you actually
opened the folder in one of them. The run reported success, and for those two views it had
genuinely done nothing.

It now builds the largest size first, so the smaller ones come from it for free. In a 25-file
test, opening the folder at Extra-large afterwards dropped from 2.8 seconds to 0.1. Pre-building
still renders each file exactly once; it takes a little longer per file now, because that one
render is finally happening at the size that was actually needed.

This also corrects something the 2.1.1 notes said: the sizes were never each re-rendering the
file. There was only ever one render per file. It was just happening at the wrong size.

## What's changed

### Fixed

- **Some AVI videos had a completely black thumbnail.** The affected files store empty filler
frames that carry no picture, and we were taking the first frame we could decode without ever
looking at it, so if one of those landed where the thumbnail is taken from, you got black,
even though your thumbnail-position setting was working perfectly. We now check whether a frame
actually has a picture in it and move on to the next one if it does not. A genuinely black
video still gets its black thumbnail, and dark scenes are unaffected: a frame only counts as
empty when EVERY pixel in it is black.

- **"Build thumbnails here" could report 100% while some thumbnails were still missing.** A file
is built at several sizes, one per Explorer view, and the run marked a file done if ANY of them
worked. So a size that quietly failed left you with a finished-looking run and a folder that
still built its tiles on first open. PDFs showed this most, because each size re-renders the
page and several files render at once, so one could run out of time while the others succeeded.
A size that misses now gets one more attempt once the rest of that file is done, and anything
still missing is reported as **partly built** instead of counted as finished.

- **Opening About started an update check even with automatic checking turned off.** The setting
correctly governed the check that happens when the app starts, but the About page ignored it
and checked every time it opened. It now respects the setting, and shows "Check for updates"
so you can still check whenever you want with one click. The button itself is unchanged: press
it and it checks, setting or no setting.

- **Settings headings cut off the bottom of letters like "g".** The heading's height was a fixed
number rather than measured from the font, so it was always a few pixels short, and the taller
everything gets the more it takes off: at 300% display scaling it was losing around ten pixels.
It now measures the font. A heading too long for the space ends in an ellipsis rather than
running under the search box.

- **Press Space to preview now works in [Everything](https://www.voidtools.com/) 1.4 as well as
1.5.** 1.4 never told anyone which result was selected, which is why it was unsupported: there
was nothing to read. It turns out its result list will answer if you ask it directly, so now we
ask. Click a result in 1.4 and tap Space and you get the same preview 1.5 users have had,
following you as you arrow down the hits. Installed or portable, under any instance name, and
whichever columns you have showing.

- **Preview now works over a window running as administrator, using a hotkey.** Space cannot work
there and never could: Windows withholds keystrokes typed into an administrator window from
ordinary programs, so the keypress never reaches us. A **global hotkey is not affected** by
that, and reading which file you have selected was never affected either, so the only thing
that was ever missing was a way to ask. Now there is one. Bind a key to the new **"Quick preview
the selected file"** action in Settings, Quick action, and it previews the selected file
anywhere, including inside an Everything or Explorer window running as administrator.

Your hotkey has to include **Ctrl, Alt or Shift**, which is a Windows rule rather than ours: a
plain one-key shortcut is delivered like ordinary typing and gets blocked over an administrator
window exactly as Space does, while a combination comes through. **Ctrl+Space** is the natural
pick. This is also why Space itself can never be made to work there, however we ask for it.

This matters most for Everything 1.4, which asks for administrator the first time it indexes
your drives, so people end up there by accident and had no way forward at all.

- **SageThumbs now TELLS you when Space cannot work, instead of doing nothing.** This used to be
the one failure that was completely silent: when the window in front runs as administrator,
Windows never delivers the keypress to us at all, so there is no swallowed key for us to notice
and complain about. So we stopped waiting for the key. The moment an Everything or Explorer
window running as administrator becomes active, you get a tray notification, **before you press
anything**, explaining why Space is doing nothing and what to use instead. **Click it and
Settings opens** so you can bind the hotkey right there. It repeats on a widening interval for
as long as the situation lasts, rather than telling you once and then leaving you to it.

**Space is still the default and has not changed.** Nothing needs configuring for the normal
case; the hotkey is only for people who choose to run as administrator.

- **`st2k doctor` reports the same thing**, for when the notification was missed or the tray icon
is hidden: with the window open it names which program is running as administrator and the fix,
and it also tells you when Quick preview is simply switched off, which is its default.

## What's changed

### Added

- **Flash video (`.flv`) files now get thumbnails.** Windows has no way to open an FLV at
all, so these have always shown a blank icon, whatever was inside them. All three of the
codecs people actually have now work:
- **H.264** is handed to Windows as a single frame in a form it already understands.
- **VP6** and **Sorenson Spark**, the older Flash codecs, are decoded by SageThumbs
itself, using the same pure-Rust decoders the Ruffle Flash emulator ships.

Nothing is unpacked to disk, and the rest of the file is never read. The two older
decoders run in a separate, short-lived helper process, so even a corrupt or deliberately
malformed video can only lose you that one thumbnail; it cannot disturb File Explorer.
Raised by @taylor-p-mason (#26).
- **HDR video thumbnails (VP9 Profile 2 and 3).** 10-bit and 12-bit VP9, the kind used for
HDR and 4K streaming, never produced a thumbnail: Windows decodes only the ordinary 8-bit
kind, and that is still true even with Microsoft's free VP9 extension installed and a
graphics card that can do it in hardware. SageThumbs now decodes those itself.

Ordinary 8-bit VP9 is untouched and still goes to Windows, which is faster and uses your
graphics card. The built-in decoder only runs when Windows has already declined, and it
runs in a separate short-lived process, so a corrupt file costs you one thumbnail rather
than disturbing File Explorer. Raised by @taylor-p-mason (#26).
- **Android app packages now show their real icon.** `.apk` files, and the split-bundle
wrappers `.xapk`, `.apks` and `.apkm`, get the launcher icon the app actually declares
rather than a generic file icon. An APK is a zip, so simply picking an image out of it
would have grabbed an arbitrary graphic from somewhere inside the app; instead the app
manifest is read to find which icon it nominates, and the highest resolution version of
that icon is used. Apps that only ship an adaptive icon (one Android assembles from
separate layers at runtime) fall back to the best plain image in the package.
Requested by @SamRohod (#24).
- **A setting for which frame a video thumbnail comes from.** Settings, Appearance, "Video
frame at (% in)". Films that open on a black distributor card or a slow fade used to
thumbnail as a black rectangle, which looks exactly like SageThumbs failing. The default
is 30% of the way in, unchanged from before, so nothing moves unless you move it.
Raised by @taylor-p-mason (#26).
- **Bigger thumbnails are now allowed.** The maximum in Settings, General goes up to 2560
pixels instead of 1024. The old limit was historical rather than technical. The default
stays at 1024 deliberately: larger thumbnails cost memory, generation time and cache
space, so this is a ceiling you opt into rather than one everybody pays for. Note that it
controls the size SageThumbs generates, not how large Explorer chooses to draw a tile.
Raised by @taylor-p-mason (#26).
- **Very large images get thumbnails now.** Pictures too big to load into memory, such as
AI-upscaled wallpapers running to hundreds of megabytes and tens of thousands of pixels
across, previously showed a plain file icon. They are now read straight off the disk a
strip at a time and shrunk as they are read, so a 340-megapixel photograph produces a
thumbnail in about two seconds without ever being held in memory whole. The default size
limit in Settings, General has been raised to match; if you had lowered it yourself, your
choice is still respected.

### Changed

- **Settings no longer freezes the defaults when you press Save.** Previously, opening
Settings and saving wrote down every value on the page, whether or not you had touched
it. That quietly pinned each one forever, so any later improvement to a default could
never reach you. Values you have not changed are now left alone and continue to follow
the default; values you deliberately set are stored and honoured exactly as before.

### Added

- **Build thumbnails for a whole folder up front, instead of waiting for Explorer to catch up.**
`st2k prebuild <folder> --recurse` walks a folder and asks Windows for every supported file's
thumbnail, so the pictures are already there the first time you open it. Useful after clearing
the thumbnail cache, or for a large library you have just copied in. By default it only builds
what is missing, so running it twice is cheap; `--rebuild-all` skips that check. It reports how
many were built, already present, and failed. Files that live in the cloud and have not been
downloaded yet are skipped, because building their thumbnails would pull them down.
Requested by @taylor-p-mason (#23).

Windows stores thumbnails separately for each icon size, so building only one size would leave
you still watching tiles appear in every other Explorer view. It therefore builds the three
sizes Explorer's Medium, Large and Extra-large views actually read. `--size` takes a list if
you want to choose (for example `--size 256`), and sizes that land in the same internal bucket
are merged so nothing is built twice.
- **"Build thumbnails here" on the right-click menu for folders and drives.** The pre-build
feature above is now a menu entry rather than a command you have to type. Right-click a folder
(or the empty space inside one, or a drive) and it walks the whole tree with a progress window
you can cancel. It appears by default and can be turned off in Settings. It is a plain menu
entry rather than a shell add-in, so it loads no SageThumbs code into Explorer and cannot slow
down or crash your folder windows.
- **The welcome screen now offers the format badge.** The option that stamps a small label
(`PSD`, `SVG`, `AVIF`…) into the corner of a thumbnail already existed in Settings, but nothing
pointed at it, so people who wanted a way to tell similar-looking files apart never found it.
It is now one of the optional switches on the welcome screen's second page. Still off unless
you ask for it, because it changes the picture you asked to see. Raised by @knchmpgn (#22).

### Changed

- **The toolbar icons now ship with SageThumbs instead of coming from Windows.** They used to be
drawn with whichever icon font the operating system happened to provide, which is why they
vanished entirely on Windows 10 (fixed in 1.11.1) and why they looked slightly different
between Windows versions. A small icon set is now built into the program itself, so every
machine shows the same buttons regardless of Windows version. It adds about 4 KB. The old
behaviour is kept as a fallback in case a machine refuses the built-in one.

- The portable version can now do Explorer thumbnails after all. 1.8.0 said it couldn't.
That was wrong, and this fixes it. The zip now includes the thumbnail handler, and
st2k register (or the button in Settings -> Advanced) switches it on for your user
account only - no installer, no administrator rights, nothing written machine-wide. The
classic right-click menu comes with it. st2k register --off undoes it, and you should run
that before moving or deleting the folder, otherwise Windows is left pointing at a file that
is no longer there. The Explorer preview pane, the Details pane columns and the Windows 11
right-click menu still need the installer, because Windows only accepts those registered for
the whole machine. (issue #13)

Added
- Optional format badge on thumbnails. Turn it on and every thumbnail gets a small label
in its corner saying what the file actually is - PSD, JXL, AVIF, JP2 - so you can tell
formats apart in a folder where the pictures look alike. Off by default, in Settings ->
General. Switching it on or off clears the thumbnail cache for you, because Windows stores
the picture we drew and would otherwise keep showing the old one. (in-app suggestion)
- A portable version, no installer. Extract the zip and run it. Nothing is installed, no
administrator rights are needed, and your settings live in SageThumbs2K.ini next to the
exe rather than in the registry - delete that file and it goes back to storing them the
normal way. You get the app and the command line tool, so Settings, Convert and Resize,
quick preview, screenshots, OCR, the colour picker and the folder tools all work. It does
not give you Explorer thumbnails or the right-click menu: Windows only loads a shell
extension whose COM class is registered, so no zip can provide those. Install the normal
build if you want them. The screenshot tool also runs only while the app is open, since a
portable copy can be moved or unplugged at any time. (issue #13)
- A "Check for problems" button in Settings, under Advanced. SageThumbs has had a thorough
self-check for a while, but only from a command prompt, so in practice nobody ever saw it. It
now opens in a window you can read and copy, and it tells you in plain words what is wrong and
how to fix it, whether that is a Windows setting, our registration, or the file itself.
- st2k doctor now catches four more reasons thumbnails go missing, all of them things
that look like the app is broken when it isn't. It spots when Windows' "Adjust for best
performance" setting is on, which switches thumbnails off and quietly turns them back off
every time you fix it. It tells you when a file lives in OneDrive and hasn't been downloaded
yet, so there is nothing on your PC to make a picture from. It warns if an old pre-2017
SageThumbs is still installed, because running its uninstaller can strip the registrations
this one needs. And it reminds you that a folder set to Details, List or Small icons never
shows thumbnails at all, whatever software you have. Each one comes with the fix.
- Setup can now restart File Explorer for you at the end, as a tick box on the last page.
Installing a thumbnail handler doesn't clear the pictures Windows already remembered, so
files you had browsed before could keep showing plain icons and make a perfectly good
install look like it did nothing. Ticking the box clears that and brings Explorer straight
back. It closes any open Explorer windows, so it is a choice rather than something setup
does behind your back. Wherever SageThumbs restarts Explorer, it now waits and checks it
actually came back, and starts it again itself if it didn't, so you can never be left
looking at an empty desktop.
- "Restart hotkey service" now sits on the Screenshots page, next to the hotkey it belongs
to, with a green or red badge saying whether the helper is actually running. It used to be
buried under Advanced, which is not where you look when your hotkey has stopped working.
- The screenshot hotkey now repairs itself if something deletes its startup entry. Some
antivirus tools remove it, because a program adding itself to Windows startup looks like
something malware does, and until now that left the hotkey quietly dead at your next sign-in.
Opening Settings puts it back.
Changed
- The PDF page-margin option moved from General to the Ebook/comic tab, where the other
document settings already live.
- The reply field on the feedback form is an email address now. It used to say "email or
other contact" and accept anything, so people typed their actual message into it and we had
no way to write back. It is still optional - leave it empty and your feedback is sent
anyway - but if you do fill it in, it has to be an address that could re

Fixed
- Black-and-white scanned pages could render as a solid black square. Some JPEG 2000
scans - the kind archive.org uses for book and map pages - store the picture as numbered
colours rather than as brightness, and a blank white page is stored as "colour number 0".
Our new decoder was treating that number as a brightness value, so the whitest page came
out the darkest. It now reads the colour table the file provides. (issue #11)
- The preview pane could stop refreshing after it had been sitting idle. Come back to a
folder after a while, click a different picture, and the pane sometimes kept showing the
previous one. Windows quietly recycles the preview pane when it has been idle, which
destroys the window we draw into; we kept drawing into the window that no longer existed,
so the update went nowhere and the stale picture stayed put. We now notice the window has
gone and rebuild it. (issue #11)
Added
- A built-in JPEG 2000 decoder that only decodes what the thumbnail needs. JPEG 2000
stores every image as a stack of halved resolutions, but every decoder we could reach
either could not use that (ImageMagick's reduction flag returns the wrong part of the
image) or did not exist in usable form - so until now a 76-megapixel scan had to be
decoded in full just to make a tile. The new decoder reads only the resolution being
displayed: that scan now thumbnails in 0.25 seconds instead of 4.4, and previews in 1.2
seconds instead of 5 - and the result is slightly sharper, because a true wavelet
resolution level keeps detail that shrinking a full decode averages away. Verified
bit-exact on lossless test images (a correct reversible decode has no rounding excuse),
and anything the decoder does not support falls back to the old path automatically, so
no file that rendered before renders worse.

What's changed
Changed
- Game textures with mipmaps thumbnail about 17x faster. A .dds file usually already
contains the picture at every halved size down to 1 pixel, because that is what a game
engine displays at a distance. We were ignoring all of it and decompressing the full-size
image to build a small tile. An 8192 x 8192 texture went from 0.87 seconds to 0.05. The
tile now comes from the texture's own smaller copy, so it looks very slightly softer than
a full decode would, which is exactly what the game itself shows.
Fixed
- "Image info" reported the wrong size for large JPEG 2000 files. A 9958 x 7686 map scan
confidently described itself as 4096 x 3161. Nothing could read a .jp2 header directly, so
the size was taken from a full decode, and that decode is capped at 4096 pixels for safety.
The number you were shown was the cap, not the picture. It now reads the real dimensions
straight out of the file in about a third of a second, without decoding anything.
- Very large images thumbnailed about twice as fast, and huge scans stopped timing out.
A 76-megapixel JPEG 2000 map scan (only 11 MB on disk) took around 9 seconds and, on a busy
folder, missed the preview pane's time limit entirely, so the pane showed nothing for a file
that was perfectly readable. The problem was not the file's size: whatever you were going to
see it at, the decode always rendered a 4096-pixel version first and threw most of it away.
It now decodes straight to the size being displayed. That scan is about 4.4 seconds for an
Explorer thumbnail and 5 seconds in the preview pane, and detail is slightly better,
because the picture is no longer resized twice. Most of what remains is the JPEG 2000
decoder itself. (issue #11)

What's changed
A word about updates. Ship nothing for a month and people ask whether the project is dead.
Ship twice in one day and people ask you to please, for the love of god, stop. There is no
version of this that everybody likes, so I went with the one where bugs actually get fixed.
More usefully: the automatic update check only ever ran if you had switched on the screenshot
helper, which almost nobody had. For most people it was never checking at all, which isn't
"quiet", it's broken. That's fixed here. If your copy still never mentions a new version,
please tell me through Send feedback in the About box. I can't fix what I can't see.
Added
- A one-time welcome screen. SageThumbs has two extras that stay switched off until you
ask for them, and most people never found out they existed. On first launch it now offers
both in one small window: Quick preview (select a file in Explorer, press Space, see it
full size) and the screenshot hotkey (Ctrl+PrtScn to grab, annotate and copy any part of
the screen), with an option to use PrtScn on its own instead. Nothing is turned on unless
you say so, it appears once, and upgrading from an older version never shows it.
Fixed
- JPEG XL thumbnails had the wrong colours when the file wasn't plain sRGB
(#9). Every other format already
honoured the colour profile inside the file; .jxl was decoding correctly and then
ignoring it, so anything from a wide-gamut source (Adobe RGB, Display P3, most modular
and lossless workflows) came out visibly shifted, while every other viewer showed it
right. Now colour-managed like the rest. Ordinary sRGB files are unchanged.
- An update that cannot replace its files now says so. If Windows is holding a file open,
the installer can only swap it on the next restart, and until now setup finished looking
perfectly successful while the PC stayed on the old version. It now checks afterwards and
tells you plainly, with what to do about it.
- "Automatically check for updates" now actually runs on every install. The periodic check
used to happen only inside the optional screenshot helper, so if you had never switched
screenshots on, SageThumbs never checked for a new version, even though the setting looked
switched on. It now checks on its own schedule, and again whenever you open SageThumbs. There
is still no background service: the check starts, looks once a day at most, tells you if
there is something newer, and closes. Turning the setting off removes the schedule.
- A blocked update now tells you it was blocked. Every failure used to be reported as
"cancelled at the Windows permission prompt" and then quietly dropped, so if your antivirus
or a security policy stopped the installer, you saw nothing at all. Now SageThumbs says what
happened, names Smart App Control when it is switched on, and offers the download page. Only
an update you cancel stays silent.
- The Windows permission prompt for an update no longer hides behind the download window.
The progress window closes before the prompt appears, and the prompt now belongs to the
SageThumbs window that started the update.

- Quick preview remembers the size you drag it to. Previously every file reopened at the
size the viewer picked for that file, so a window you had just widened snapped back the moment
you arrowed to the next one. Resize it once and that is now the size, for the next file and for
every preview after it. Double-click the title bar to forget it and go back to fitting each
file to its own content. The size is stored independently of display scaling and is clamped to
fit whatever screen you open it on.
- Quick preview remembers the volume. Turning a clip down (or muting it) now carries to the
next video or audio track, instead of every file starting at full volume again.

What's changed
Added
- Windows on Arm is supported, with its own installer. SageThumbs2K-Setup-<ver>-arm64.exe
runs natively on ARM64 Windows instead of under emulation, and it is a full build: it bundles
the same ImageMagick engine as the x64 installer, so every format works the same on both.
The x64 installer is unchanged.
- EPS files now get thumbnails, without rendering PostScript. SageThumbs reads the
safe raster preview already embedded by DOS-EPS, EPSI, or Photoshop, while files with no
embedded preview still keep their stock icon.
- Paint.NET .pdn files now get thumbnails. Paint.NET saves a small flattened preview
inside the file, and SageThumbs reads that, so you see the picture rather than a blank
icon, with every layer already composited. It works on files from older Paint.NET
versions as well as current ones, and nothing about the drawing itself is opened.
Fixed
- Submenu menu previews now appear reliably. The preview row is added while the
right-click menu is built instead of depending on Explorer to send a submenu-open
notification that it can omit for extension-created child menus.
- The General settings page no longer crowds the footer. The checkerboard option now
lives with the Right-click Menu preview controls it affects, leaving comfortable space
above Save and Close while the two list-heavy pages keep their intentional scrolling.
- Screenshot selections are measured against the right screen on mixed-DPI setups. With
a scaled display placed to the left of, or above, the main one, the capture overlay sized
its selection outline, handles and readout for the wrong monitor.
- Strip metadata now refreshes the file's thumbnail immediately. Explorer is notified
after the in-place rewrite instead of continuing to show the cached pre-strip image.
- HEIC/AVIF edge-case transparency is preserved. Compact-layout AVIF mini containers
now reach the bundled decoder, and the Full install's isolated thumbnail/preview handlers
route affected HEIC files around the Windows decoder that flattens their auxiliary alpha.

What's changed
Added
- Screenshots of an HDR display are no longer washed out. Grabbing the screen the
ordinary way gets what Windows has already flattened to standard range, which on an HDR
monitor looks pale and grey with the bright parts blown out. SageThumbs now takes the real
high-range image and maps it down itself, so the shot looks like the screen did. Only kicks
in on a monitor that is actually in HDR mode; everything else captures exactly as before,
and if anything goes wrong it quietly falls back rather than failing. On a laptop with an
external screen, each display is handled on its own, so a mixed setup comes out right.
- Strip metadata now removes Content Credentials (C2PA). This is the provenance record
newer cameras and AI image tools embed, and it is not EXIF or XMP, so ordinary metadata
cleaners leave it behind. Image info tells you whether a file carries one before you decide.
A JPEG XT high-range layer uses the same marker and is deliberately left alone.
- Strip metadata covers more formats: WebP, SVG and HEIC/AVIF as well as JPEG and PNG. An
SVG loses the author, machine name and editor history it was exported with, while a
description inside a shape is kept because that is what a screen reader reads out. HEIC and
AVIF are cleaned without moving a single byte in the file, so a photo cannot be damaged by
it; if the layout is anything unfamiliar it declines instead of guessing.
- Converting keeps your photo's details. Camera, lens, exposure, date, GPS, keywords and
captions now survive Convert and Resize instead of being thrown away when the picture is
re-saved. On by default, switchable in Settings. Shrink for email still removes everything,
on purpose: that one exists to hand a file to someone else.
- Convert can write every preset size in one go, named so you can tell them apart, and can
pad to an exact size with a soft blurred fill instead of leaving you to crop.
- Comic archives get a proper index. Combine into CBZ now writes the ComicInfo.xml that
Kavita, Komga and YACReader read, with the page count and each page's size.
- Combine into PDF can add a page margin, and can fit pages to A4 or Letter, centred and
never enlarged.
- More things preview: .woff web fonts get the same specimen sheet as any other font,
and .srt / .vtt subtitle files open as text.
- Image info shows more of what a file is hiding: whether it has a high-range gain map,
the AI-generation tags newer tools write, the names tagged on faces, and for a game texture
its real compression format and mip count.
- The colour picker can collect a set. Ctrl+Space (or Ctrl+click) adds the colour under the
cursor to a list and keeps picking; Space copies the whole list. Esc still cancels.
Fixed
- Esc now cancels a screenshot. The capture window could end up without keyboard focus, so
no key reached it at all: the mouse worked, nothing else did, and you were stuck under a
full-screen overlay. The same fault also meant the colour picker ignored Space and Esc, and
that right-click windows like Convert could open BEHIND the Explorer window that launched
them and look like the menu item had done nothing.
- Camera names no longer appear wrapped in quote marks in Explorer's columns and details.
- Files in deeply nested folders get thumbnails again, including OneDrive-synced ones well
past the old path-length limit.
Security
- Bundled ImageMagick updated to 7.1.2-29, picking up a set of 2026 fixes for ways its
security policy could be side-stepped, plus hardening across several older image formats.

What's changed
This one rolls up 1.4.0 and 1.4.1.
New
- Read the text off your screen. The screenshot editor has a Copy text (OCR) button
(Ctrl+T): drag a region and the words land on your clipboard and in a small editable
window. Bind Settings ▸ Screenshots ▸ Custom action ▸ Copy text on screen (OCR) to a hotkey
for a one-key version with no editor at all. Small on-screen type reads cleanly now.
- Copy text (OCR) in Quick preview too. Press Space on a file and click it. Works on every
format SageThumbs opens, not just the ones Windows understands, including Photoshop files,
camera RAW and scans. On a multi-page PDF it reads the page you're looking at.
- Send feedback without leaving the app. A Send feedback button in the About box sends a
suggestion, bug report or format request straight to the developer, no GitHub account needed.
An email address is optional; leave it out and the message still arrives.
Fixed
- Huge OpenEXR files now get thumbnails. A 12K VFX frame with PIZ compression used to show
nothing at all: too big to load, so no thumbnail, no preview, no Quick preview. EXRs are now
read straight off the file and shrunk as they're read, so size stops mattering. A 445 MB
12288×6480 frame that produced nothing before thumbnails in a few seconds, and ordinary EXRs
got about 6× faster on a 12K file with a fraction of the memory.
- Widening the Quick preview window re-wraps the text. Rendered documents sat in a
fixed-width column, so dragging the window wider only added empty space at the sides. The text
column follows the window now.
- Chinese, Japanese and Korean text files are readable again. Quick preview assumed UTF-8, so
GBK/GB18030, Shift-JIS, Big5 and EUC-KR files came up as a wall of replacement characters. The
encoding is worked out now, including UTF-16 without a byte-order mark.
- Chinese, Japanese and Thai text wraps instead of running off the edge. Those languages
don't put spaces between words, so a paragraph was treated as one enormous word and got cut
off. It wraps to the panel now, and follows the usual typesetting rules: a full stop won't be
pushed to the start of a line, an opening bracket won't be stranded at the end of one.

- HEIC and AVIF thumbnails keep their declared colors. Files that pair Display-P3
primaries with a non-sRGB transfer curve are no longer forced through an incompatible

Fixed
- The right-click preview shows the picture again, without recolouring your menu. Since 1.3.2
the preview had been squashed into a strip a few pixels tall on PCs running a third-party menu
skin such as StartAllBack or ExplorerPatcher. It is drawn full size on those PCs now, and
everyone else keeps the menu exactly as Windows draws it. The two kinds of PC need the preview
drawn two different ways, and SageThumbs now picks the right one for yours. There is nothing to
configure: if you have never heard of a menu skin, nothing about your menu changes.
Added
- Music files show their album art. Pressing Space on an MP3, FLAC, M4A, OGG or WMA already
played the track with a seek bar, but the picture area behind it was blank. It now shows the
cover art stored in the file. Tracks without any keep the plain dark background.

1.3.6 26 de juliol del 2026 — 64 bits EXE (Inno Setup)
Notes de la versió
What's changed
- Explorer stays responsive when menus and metadata appear. Right-click construction no longer
decodes the selected file just to prepare a preview; the image is generated only if the
SageThumbs submenu actually opens. Details-pane metadata probes are header-only, capped at
250 ms, and limited to two detached workers so slow files or providers cannot accumulate work in
Explorer or SearchIndexer.
- Large camera RAW and OS-codec thumbnails use bounded memory. Shell streams can take an early,
structurally validated embedded JPEG without reading the sensor-data tail, while WIC scales
HEIC, AVIF, RAW, and JPEG 2000 frames before copying RGBA pixels into SageThumbs. Ordinary TIFF
files remain on the normal path, and the configured maximum file size still applies.
- Pathological Windows metafiles fail quickly. WMF and EMF decoding now has a dedicated
three-second/96 MiB ImageMagick budget instead of consuming the broader raster allowance.
- The optional uninstall note can include reply details. People who want an answer can leave an
email or other contact beside their feedback; skipping the survey still never delays removal.
- Connections sync is safer across devices and accounts. Nested preference changes preserve
unrelated remote edits, cache validators cannot cross account boundaries, shutdown flushes
pending settings, and retry timing honors server throttling.
- Release packaging is self-contained and icon-verified. Public artifacts contain the
installable application without development folders, and release validation checks the visible
executable and installer branding before publication.
- Huge archives now return immediately instead of tying up Explorer. The archive limit
is enforced before 7z parsing on every shell-stream path—even when Max file size is set
to Unlimited or a provider omits the filename or length. The reported 909,208,825-byte
project archive was tested directly and rejected before parsing; network-share timing
is allowed to vary.
- Conversions are exact, atomic and memory-bounded. EXR, HDR, Farbfeld, PAM and PPM
use native streaming writers with high-bit-depth data preserved where the format allows.
Every other advertised target uses an explicit bundled writer; unsupported targets fail
before reading the source, and a failed conversion cannot replace an existing file or
leave PNG data under the wrong extension.
- AVIF and JPEG XL export now include their real writer engines. Earlier Full
packages advertised these conversions but removed load-bearing ImageMagick
delegates, which could leave PNG bytes under the requested extension on a clean PC.
This build retains the required writers, runtimes and legal files, independently
verifies all 14 Magick-backed output signatures, and rejects incomplete bundles.
- Screenshot and Quick preview background handling is down to one resident helper.
The removed watchdog stays removed, and install/verification restarts the shared daemon
directly instead of leaving a second command-shell process behind. Full-screen editor
automation now also exercises Shift-snapped line drawing through the real window.
- Release builds now fail closed. Staged contents, exact upgrade-cleanup rules, package
signatures, source inputs, version, artifact digest, size budget and reviewed release
notes are all verified before a build can be published.

SageThumbs 2K 1.3.4
This patch release makes Quick preview a little faster and easier to use while tightening the
release process itself.
What changed
- Static GIF, PNG and WebP previews no longer read the same file twice while checking for
animation.
- Large project, archive and PDF previews use bounded, preview-aware reads to avoid unnecessary
whole-file buffering.
- Moving between files follows Explorer's natural order, so image2 comes before image10.
- The narrow preview scrollbar has a larger invisible grab area without covering more content.
- Release publishing is tied to the exact commit that passed CI, and the benchmark now reports
real failures and percentile timings instead of accepting stale output files.
The full release test suite, dependency checks, real-format corpus and direct Quick preview smoke
tests pass.

What changed
- The Quick preview scrollbar for long text, code and rendered Markdown is now interactive:
drag the thumb to move through the document, or click the track to move one page.
- High-resolution mouse-wheel and touchpad deltas now accumulate smoothly instead of occasionally
being lost below a full wheel notch.
- The built-in updater now requires GitHub's SHA-256 digest, accepts installers only from the
canonical SageThumbs 2K release path, verifies the file written to disk, and protects it from
replacement through the Windows elevation hand-off.
- Additional malformed-input and URL validation was added across several document/image readers
and screenshot-upload handling.
- Compatible locked dependencies were refreshed, the declared Rust 1.93 minimum is now exercised
in CI, and GitHub Actions are pinned to immutable revisions.

- Large solid .7z archives no longer trigger huge decompression work just to make a thumbnail. Images near the front still preview; deeply buried images fall back to the normal archive icon.
- ZIP and 7z archives containing SVG images can now build the usual cover/contact-sheet thumbnail.
- The classic right-click menu stays readable in Windows dark mode when the image preview is enabled.
- Settings now uses Save and Close labels that match what the buttons actually do.
- All 35 non-English translations now contain the complete Settings text, with a new release check preventing missing keys and placeholders.
Thanks to Bruno for reporting the dark-menu and Settings-button problems.

What's new in 1.3.1
"Show quick actions in the menu" works again. Turning it on puts Convert into, Convert…, Resize and Rotate right on the right-click menu instead of one level deep in the submenu. On many setups it was doing nothing: if your right-click menu is the classic full one (a very common Windows 11 choice), the quick actions were being hidden with nothing to replace them. They now show up whenever the option is on.
Menu changes take effect right away. Toggling a menu option in Settings and hitting Save now refreshes Explorer's menu, so you see the change on your next right-click instead of having to restart Explorer.
Big files and big folders thumbnail much faster. Large Photoshop (.psd/.psb), AutoCAD (.dwg) and 3D-printer G-code files used to be read in full just to pull out the small preview stored near the start, so a folder of them filled in slowly, one at a time. SageThumbs now reads only the part of the file that holds the preview, which is a tiny fraction of a large document. Very large AutoCAD files that previously showed no thumbnail at all now get one.
Big EPUB books now show their real cover instead of a random picture from inside them.
Tested with a clean-room install on real Windows 10 Home 22H2 (install, registration and thumbnail decode all verified).

A few heuristic/ML engines may flag the installer. This is a known false positive for a new, unsigned installer that few people have downloaded yet; it clears as more people install the same file. The SHA-256 above lets you confirm you have exactly the file we built.
1.3.0 21 de juliol del 2026 — 64 bits EXE (Inno Setup)
Notes de la versió
What's new in 1.3.0
Thumbnails for ZIP, RAR and 7z archives
A plain archive no longer shows a generic icon. It shows what's inside: either a single cover
image, or by default a contact-sheet collage of up to four, so a folder of photos zipped up
looks obviously different from a single photo. Covers are picked the same way comic covers
are: natural filename order, an image named "cover" preferred, junk like __MACOSX and
Thumbs.db skipped.
It stays cheap on huge archives. The file list is read from the archive's own index and only
the chosen images are ever extracted, so a multi-gigabyte ZIP costs a few KB plus a handful of
images, in the Explorer thumbnail and the preview pane alike. Archives with no images, or
encrypted ones, keep their normal icon.
New toggle in Settings ▸ Ebook/comic: "Contact-sheet thumbnails for ZIP/RAR/7z" (on by
default; turn it off for a single first-image thumbnail, classic CBXShell style). Comic and
ebook archives (cbz/cbr/cb7/epub) are unchanged and still show their one cover.
GIMP .xcf files finally thumbnail, including modern GIMP
Older .xcf files worked, but anything saved by GIMP 2.10 or GIMP 3 showed nothing at all in
Explorer. The bundled converter simply cannot read the current XCF format. SageThumbs now
reads XCF itself, decodes its tiles and flattens the visible layers, so it works on every
install including the compact one with no bundled converter. This was the bug behind
#5.
Quick preview: Markdown
- Task lists render as real checkboxes instead of literal [ ] / [x] text.
- Copying keeps the document's structure. Ctrl+C used to flatten everything: nested
bullets came out flat, headings and quotes lost their markers, code ran into the prose and
paragraphs were jammed together. Copied text is now proper Markdown, so it pastes with its
headings, nesting, numbering, quotes and fenced code intact, and still reads fine anywhere
plain. Tables still copy tab-separated so they paste into a spreadsheet as columns.
Fixes
- st2k doctor <file> now probes one specific file end to end and tells you whether that
file can be thumbnailed, instead of only confirming the install looks healthy. If a file
isn't working, run this and paste the output into an issue.
- Silent installs no longer hang. A first-time /VERYSILENT install in a headless session
could deadlock before copying any files.
- Hardened archive handling against malformed and hostile inputs (bounded entry listing,
duplicate-name handling, and the upstream 7z num_files fix).
Tested on Windows 10
1.3.0 was verified on a clean Windows 10 Home 22H2 (build 19045) virtual machine, not just
on Windows 11: silent install, all four Explorer integrations registering and loading, 326 of
326 formats hooked, and real thumbnails produced.

Three engines flag it, and it's worth being upfront about what they are. Microsoft's is
Trojan:Win32/Wacatac.B!ml; the other two are APEX and Skyhigh. All three are generic
machine-learning verdicts rather than a match on anything specific. The !ml suffix is
Microsoft's own marker for a machine-learning guess. The previous release, 1.2.2, carries the

1.0.1 14 de juliol del 2026 — 64 bits EXE (Inno Setup)
Notes de la versió
A small patch that fixes convert output size for vector graphics.
Fixed
- Small vector graphics now convert to a usable size. Right-clicking Convert into PNG on a small SVG icon (or a small .emf clip art) used to produce a tiny image at the file's built-in size (as small as 24 pixels). Since these are vectors with no fixed resolution, SageThumbs now renders them up to a crisp, usable size. Larger files are unchanged.
Install
Download SageThumbs2K-Setup-1.0.1.exe below and run it (Windows 11).
1.0.0 14 de juliol del 2026 — 64 bits EXE (Inno Setup)
Notes de la versió
SageThumbs 2K is out of beta. Version 1.0 refines the Quick preview and Settings and smooths out the rough edges found in real-world use.
What's new
- The preview opens in front, then stays out of your way. Press Space and the preview jumps to the front of your other windows, then behaves like a normal window you can click past or cover. The old "always on top" behavior is gone. You can still pin a preview on top from its toolbar. On by default.
- Local HTML files render as pages. Open an .html file and the preview shows the real page instead of its source, locked down (WebView2 with scripts off and no network). On by default.
- Smoother text, code, and log scrolling. No flicker or stutter, big files stay smooth, line numbers are shown, and there is a scroll position indicator.
- Smoother Markdown scrolling. Large Markdown documents scroll cleanly instead of lagging.
- A crisper Settings window. The toggles, icons, and buttons are now smoothly anti-aliased.
Install
Download SageThumbs2K-Setup-1.0.0.exe below and run it (Windows 11).
0.10.0 13 de juliol del 2026 — 64 bits EXE (Inno Setup)
Notes de la versió
New
- Press Space to preview any file, QuickLook-style. An instant full-size popup for anything SageThumbs can decode — videos and audio play, GIFs animate, code is syntax-highlighted, and Markdown, Jupyter notebooks, CSVs and archives all render. Arrow-key through a folder, F11 for full-screen. Off by default (Settings ▸ Quick preview).
Improved
- Markdown previews render GitHub-style: outline sidebar, inline images, real tables, and clickable links.
0.9.0 10 de juliol del 2026 — 64 bits EXE (Inno Setup)
Notes de la versió
0.9.0 (2026-07-09)
- The preview pane now handles big files like thumbnails do. Explorer's reading/preview pane
used to read a file whole before showing it — so a multi-gigabyte video, a long audiobook, or an
oversized comic/.blend/Photoshop file would either bog down the preview host or just show a
blank pane, even though its thumbnail worked fine. The pane now uses the exact same shortcuts the
thumbnail does: it grabs a single video frame, seeks straight to embedded album art, or pulls the
cover out of a huge archive without ever loading the whole file, and it respects your size limit.
- DICOM .dcm medical scans finally thumbnail. They were listed as supported but never
actually rendered — the file's TIFF-like header fooled the decoder into treating it as a broken
TIFF. CT/MR slices now show real, legible anatomy (the low-contrast medical data is auto-stretched
so it isn't just a flat gray square).
- Apple .icns icons actually work now. They were listed as supported but no decoder ever
handled them; the embedded PNG (or JPEG-2000) icon is now extracted directly.
- If you sync settings, your name shows up instead of a random email. The "Synced as" row
used to show an opaque per-app privacy-relay address; it now shows your actual display name
(falling back to the relay address only if no name is available).
- Release-readiness polish. Licensing docs, the supported-format counts quoted across the
README/docs, and some duplicated internal code were reconciled so everything lines up; file
renames during Convert/Resize are now atomic (no half-written output if something goes wrong
mid-write).
- Screenshot capture fixes. A stray 1px window border and the invisible DWM resize border no
longer sneak into --shot-style captures used for the app's own documentation screenshots.
- Updated the DjVu decoder dependency to pick up upstream fixes and trim unused transitive deps
(no user-facing behavior change).
- Corrected a README claim: SageThumbs does have a small, anonymous sponsor-banner beacon (no
personal data, no files, no images) — it was previously miscategorized as "no tracking."
0.8.0 7 de juliol del 2026 — 64 bits EXE (Inno Setup)
Notes de la versió
SageThumbs 2K 0.8.0 — Sync your settings across your PCs
✨ New: optional settings sync
Settings has a new Data & Backup section with a "Sync settings…" button. Sign in with a Connections account (it opens your real browser — SageThumbs never sees your password) and your portable preferences follow you to every machine you sign into: thumbnail limits & quality, the right-click menu layout & toggles, hotkeys, language, and ebook/comic options.
- Off by default — no network happens unless you turn it on.
- Privacy-first — only an allowlist of portable settings syncs; never your files, folder paths, passwords, or images. Your settings always stay on your PC too, so everything keeps working fully offline or signed out. Disconnect anytime and the cloud copy is removed.
- Secure sign-in — the token that keeps you signed in is encrypted on your machine with Windows' DPAPI and is never part of the synced data.
- Still crash-isolated — all sign-in/sync code lives in the Settings app; the thumbnail shell extension itself never touches the network.
Also included (rolled up from the never-tagged 0.7.2)
Hotkeys now survive sleep / lock / updates, the tray icon survives Explorer restarts, more reliable screenshot copying, OCR bindable to your custom hotkey, much faster "Sort into folders ▸ By image size", capture & upload progress feedback, and several st2k CLI fixes. See the full changelog.
Install: download SageThumbs2K-Setup-0.8.0.exe below and run it. Thumbnails for 316 file types Windows can't show on its own, a right-click image toolkit, and now settings that follow you across PCs.
0.7.1 2 de juliol del 2026 — 64 bits EXE (Inno Setup)
Notes de la versió
SageThumbs 2K 0.7.1
- See a screenshot's exact size while you drag it. When you drag out a region to capture, a small width × height readout now sits at the corner of the selection, so you can size things precisely (in real pixels).
- The screenshot / action hotkeys stay working. The small background helper that powers the global hotkeys now restarts itself automatically if it ever stops, and just opening Settings brings it back if it was down — so your hotkey won't quietly stop firing. Its live status shows under Settings ▸ Advanced ▸ "Hotkey service".
- New: right-click ▸ Upload (copy link). Right-click an image (or several) and upload straight to a free, no-account host (catbox.moe by default), with the link(s) copied to your clipboard — your original files are left untouched. The resulting links open in a small window you can select and copy from.
- About box opens centered, with the proper GitHub icon. The About window now appears centered over Settings instead of stuck in the top-left corner, and its GitHub badge shows the real GitHub logo.
- "Hide tray icon" moved to Advanced. That toggle now lives under Settings ▸ Advanced ▸ "Hotkey service", next to the Restart button.
Updating: existing users can update in-app — Settings ▸ Advanced ▸ Check for updates downloads and installs it automatically — or grab the installer below.
