Now for older PCs too. This release comes in two editions — pick the one for your
processor:

Download │For
──────────────────────────────┼──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

──────────────────────────────┴──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
They are the same program with the same features and settings. The normal edition is
built for the AVX2 instructions newer processors have, and tells you if yours does
not — the message now names the Legacy CPU download instead of just refusing to start.
Not sure? Try QuickImageViewer.exe first.
The Legacy CPU edition was checked on emulated 2008 and 2011 processors, opening every
supported format, before it was published.
Everything else in 3.2 — several windows working as one — is below. If you already have
3.2.0.451 and your PC runs it, nothing changed for you beyond the clearer message.
New instance — Ctrl+N
qIV normally runs as one copy: launching it again hands the picture to the window that
is already open. Ask for a second window when you want one:
- Ctrl+N, or right-click › New Instance
- Shift + double-click anywhere on the picture (a plain double-click still toggles
fullscreen)
- Hold Shift while launching qIV from Explorer or a shortcut
Sync Instances — Ctrl+Shift+N
Two folders side by side, compared picture by picture.
- One switch for every window. Turn it on in any copy and every copy is synced; turn
it off in any copy and they all stop.
- What follows: next / previous, first / last, zoom in / out / reset, keyboard pan
(W A S D) and rotate / flip — from whichever window you happen to be in.
- Each window walks its own folder. Next means its next picture, not the other
window's.
- You can see it is on. A gold SYNC leads the top-right corner of every synced
window.
- A window opened with Ctrl+N while sync is on joins straight away. Sync is never

Layouts that do not fit the number of open windows are greyed out. Each window takes the
slot nearest to where it already was, and windows on other monitors are brought over.
Dedicated screens and windows hidden in the tray are left exactly where they are.
Cycle the arrangement — Ctrl+Alt+Space
One key for all of it.
- With several windows it steps through the layouts for that count — two windows go
side by side, then top and bottom — and the next press puts every window back where
it was, fullscreen included. A window you moved by hand in the meantime is left where
you put it. Press it in any window; they all share the same cycle.
- With one window it walks the screen clockwise from the top: top, top-right, right,
bottom-right, bottom, bottom-left, left, top-left — then back to its normal size in the
middle, and round again.
Fixes
- Snapping a fullscreen window broke it. Alt+W A S D and the quarter snaps
shrank the window but left it borderless, always on top and still treated as
fullscreen. Snapping now leaves fullscreen first.
- The download and last-commit badges kept showing "invalid". They depended on a
shared quota that runs out; they are now served from this repository's own data and
update on every push.

qIV 3.1.0.450
Cull a photo shoot without leaving the viewer. Point qIV at four hundred frames,
press one key per picture, and the ones you rejected move together at the end. Nothing
touches the disk until you say so.
The Find box also learned to filter by size and date, and four bugs found after 3.0 are
fixed — one of them a decoder reading undefined values.
Cull mode — Alt+Space
A pass through a folder saying yes or no to each picture.
- One keystroke per picture. K keeps, X rejects, U clears the mark, and each one
advances by itself — four hundred frames is four hundred keys and no mouse. Press the
same key twice on a picture to undo it.
- You can see what you decided. The filename carries its mark as you go: a tick for
keep, a cross for reject, a dot for one you have not judged yet. Thumbnail strips tint
to match — green for keep, red for reject.
- Nothing is written while you mark. The marks live in memory. Leaving the mode is
what asks, and the count it names is the count it moves. Say no and nothing happens.
- Rejects stay on disk. They go into a _rejected folder beside them — same drive,
same place, undoable with Ctrl+Z in Explorer. Never the Recycle Bin, never a delete.
Or keep the winners instead. Whichever mark you used is the one that acts: mark
rejects and those move, mark only keeps and you are asked whether to move everything
else. That is how four hundred frames become the twelve good ones without rejecting the
other 388 one at a time.
Or forty at once. While the mode is on, a strip's right-click menu gains Mark Keep,
Mark Reject and Clear Mark, and they act on the whole selection. The keyboard marks
one picture; a strip can mark forty.
Entering cull mode stops a running slideshow — a playlist advancing on a timer while you
mark would land your keystrokes on the wrong picture.
Find by size and date
Type a comparison into the Find box, next to a name or on its own:
───────────┬────────────────────────────────────────
Typed │Finds
───────────┼────────────────────────────────────────
>5mb │everything over five megabytes
───────────┼────────────────────────────────────────
<500kb │everything under five hundred kilobytes
───────────┼────────────────────────────────────────
>2024 │anything modified after 2024 ended
───────────┼────────────────────────────────────────
<2024-06 │anything modified before June 2024 began
───────────┼────────────────────────────────────────
>5mb sunset│the big ones called sunset
───────────┴────────────────────────────────────────
They combine with each other and with the name. A word only becomes a filter when it
cannot be anything else, so ordinary filename search is untouched — a file actually named
2024 still matches.
Fixes
- EXR and HDR files could produce arbitrary pixels. The tone-map guard ran after the
Reinhard curve instead of before it, so a NaN, a negative or an infinity in a
high-dynamic-range file reached the conversion unchecked.
- Every cross-folder search matched the wrong text. An invalid escape sequence broke
the separator search in the folder index, so Ctrl+Shift+F compared your query against
whole paths instead of filenames.
- A folder scan could die on a permission error. The directory walk threw partway
through instead of skipping the entry.
- A COM reference leaked on every thumbnail panel that registered a drop target.

QuickImageViewer now has a phone. qIV Remote
is on Google Play — free, no ads, no account. It turns any phone or tablet into a remote
control, a second screen, or a photo frame this app drives, as many at once as you have
devices lying around.
The desktop side gets two new features, a long list of fixes, and one silent data-loss
bug that had been there a while.
Find duplicate pictures — Ctrl+D
Scans every folder qIV knows and lists the pictures you have more than one copy of.
- Identical copies only. Files are grouped by size first, so almost nothing is read;
only files that share a size are opened, hashed, and then compared byte for byte
before anything is reported. A re-encoded or rotated version is a different file and is
deliberately not listed.
- You can see them. Results are numbered by group — 1. 1. 1. 2. 2. — so it is
obvious which copies belong together, and clicking a row shows every copy in that
group side by side with the selected one framed. Identical files usually differ only
in name; looking at them together is the only way to be sure.
- You can act on them. Right-click a row or a thumbnail to open it, show it in
Explorer, or send it to the Recycle Bin — never a straight delete. A choice made at
speed from a list has to be undoable.
- A listing is also written to qivDuplicates.txt beside qIV.
Nothing is ever deleted on its own.
Search every folder, not just this one — Ctrl+Shift+F
Ctrl+F still searches the folder on screen. Ctrl+Shift+F searches every folder qIV
knows — the whole history — so you can find a picture by name without remembering where
you put it, and open it straight from the result.
Press it while Find is already open and it widens the search you are typing instead of
closing the panel; Ctrl+F narrows it back. The panel header says which scope you are in
and how many pictures are indexed.
Your folders on the taskbar
Right-click qIV's taskbar button and Windows lists your folders — favourites first, then
the most recent — each one opening that folder directly, whether or not qIV is running.
Built from the same history the Tab panel shows, so the two cannot disagree, and rebuilt
whenever you navigate or star a folder. Clearing the history clears it too.
Fixed
🔥 Folders with non-Latin names truncated your history file
Writing a path containing Cyrillic, Greek or accented characters failed silently and
discarded every folder after it in the file. qivHistory.txt and qivFavorites.txt are
written as UTF-8 now, they keep their CRLF line endings, and existing files read back
unchanged.
If your history has been mysteriously short, this is why.
A mistyped password no longer bans you permanently
Five failed connections from one address used to write a permanent entry in
qivRemoteServerBlacklist.ini. They now cost fifteen minutes, and only five more
earn a permanent one. The temporary block lives in memory, so restarting qIV lifts it —
mistyping your own password on a phone should not need a file edited to undo.
-remote did nothing when qIV had nothing to show
Launched with no picture, no remembered folder and no history, qIV opened its file chooser
and stopped there — the remote listener never opened its socket, and -full,
-slideshow and -hideMouse never applied. The chooser now opens after the rest of
startup has run.
And
- -monitorNum#N picks the screen you meant. It used the display driver's order,
which bears no relation to the numbering Ctrl+M, the Statistics panel and every other
message in the program use.
- File lists sort naturally. promo2 came after promo10 in several places that
claimed to match Explorer — including the promotion playlist and four
history-maintenance lists, which also sorted case-sensitively.
- A settings import no longer turns an exported "Off" into 100 MB.
- The image cache can no longer overcommit graphics memory. It bounded itself by a
count of pictures, so a handful of large animations could hold several gigabytes.
There is a byte ceiling now, and evicting against it

Orientation is now correct everywhere it is read, the remote folder list reflects the running session, and the current image can be handed to another program without going through Explorer first.
Image orientation
- EXIF orientation is baked into the decoded pixels instead of turning the viewport. The viewer used to rotate what was on the glass and leave the pixels alone, so fit-to-window, the pan limits, the pan direction and the zoom were all measuring the unrotated shape. Every one of those is fixed by decoding the picture the right way up in the first place, with no change to any of them. It shows up on HEIC above all, because virtually every photo straight off a phone carries the tag.
- A copied image is no longer turned differently from the one on screen. Orientation had two readings — one applied to the viewport, one not applied at all — and the clipboard took the second.
- A pushed preview arrives the right way up. The transfer path re-encodes pixels for another machine rather than drawing to the glass, so it never saw the viewport rotation and sent a sideways picture of an upright one. It went unnoticed on a normal library, where files that have lived on a PC are usually already rotated in their pixels; it was guaranteed to show on anything straight off a camera, which is exactly what the Stream feature pushes.
Remote
- The folder list a client sees is built from the live in-memory list, not the history file. That file is append-only, so it could not contain this session's changes — the phone's folder list and the History panel's disagreed until a restart.
Files and clipboard
- Ctrl+Shift+C — copy the current image's full path as text, for pasting into a terminal, a file dialog or a message. Ctrl+C still copies the picture itself.
- Ctrl+Shift+O — open the current image in another program through Windows' own chooser. The "always use this app" box is hidden deliberately: picking an editor for one look should not reassign the file type.
- Thumbnail right-click gains Copy Path, Open With and Show in Explorer. The main window could already reveal the current image with L, but there was no way to reveal a specific thumbnail.
- Both new commands, and all three menu entries, refuse an image that arrived over the network rather than guessing. A streamed picture lives in a temporary file that is deleted at the next change of image, so its path is worthless and opening it hands an editor a file that vanishes.
Fixes
- A file operation refused during a remote session now says why. The thumbnail strips asked the same rule as everything else and then discarded the reason it gave, so Ctrl+C, Ctrl+X, Ctrl+V and Delete in a strip were dead keys while a connection was live — the identical command from the main window had always explained itself.
- A failed clipboard open is reported. Copying the current image announced success and said nothing when the clipboard was held by another process, and copying files said nothing either way. A failed open leaves the previous contents in place, so the next paste quietly succeeded with the wrong data.
- Reveal-in-Explorer no longer opens the wrong folder. SHOpenFolderAndSelectItems does not fail on a missing file — it opens somewhere else — so deleting the picture on screen and pressing L sent you to the wrong place with no message. The check existed in one of the five copies of that call; all five now share it.
- The metadata panel's clipboard copy could publish an unwritten handle and leaked it on failure. Replaced with the shared implementation.
- Copy and Cut are refused on a streamed image in the cache strip. Cut marks the file for a move, so pasting it in Explorer would have moved a file the viewer then tries to delete.

Folder-tree navigation, a reorganised settings menu, and a set of tools for keeping
your folder history clean.
Single portable executable, still under 10 MB. No installer, no runtime to install
first, no background service, nothing phoned home.
Walk the folder tree from the keyboard
Alt + the arrow keys now move through folders the way the arrow keys move through
images:
─────────┬────────────────────────────────────────────
Key │Goes
─────────┼────────────────────────────────────────────
Alt + ↑ │up to the parent folder
─────────┼────────────────────────────────────────────
Alt + ↓ │down into the first subfolder
─────────┼────────────────────────────────────────────
Alt + ← /│across to the previous / next sibling folder
→ │
─────────┴────────────────────────────────────────────
Each step names where it landed — ➡ 8/20 "13_Music" — so a sideways walk through
twenty folders never leaves you guessing which one you are in. Wrapping at the ends is
a tray setting. Landing somewhere empty or missing is explained on screen rather than
looking like a key that did nothing.
Settings › History
Everything about the folder history now lives in one submenu instead of being scattered
through the settings list.
Recording
- Record Folders I Visit — the master switch. Off stops new folders reaching both
the list and qivHistory.txt, without affecting navigation.
- Record Only Folders With Images (new default: on) — folders holding no images
are not recorded. Walking the folder tree lands you in every child of a parent,
images or not; this keeps those out of the list so what remains is places you
actually looked at pictures.
Housekeeping — each asks first, and backs up the file before touching it:
- Remove Invalid Folders — drops rows that are not a usable path, point somewhere
that no longer exists, or hold no images.
- Remove Duplicates — collapses repeats, keeping the most recent.
- Clear History, Clear Favorites, Clear History and Favorites — each names
what survives it.
- Open History File — straight to qivHistory.txt in Explorer.
Limits — the labels now say which question each one answers: Rows Shown in Panel
and Favorite Rows Shown in Panel are display only, while Favorites You Can Add and
Folders Saved to File bound what is stored.
Backup & Export
A new top-level menu collecting every operation that moves data on and off the disk,
instead of having them split between the Settings menu and a Backup menu.
- Export / Import Settings — as before
- Backup Logs — zips the whole logs folder to wherever you choose. Handy for a
bug report
- Backup / Restore TCP/IP Config — qivLocalServer.ini, qivRemoteServers.ini and
qivRemoteServerBlacklist.ini. None of these live in the registry, so the settings
export never covered them. Restore asks per file before replacing one that exists
- Backup / Restore History & Favorites — as before
Also new
- Full Path in the overlay — the bottom-left slot can show the whole path
(📂 D:\Pics\Summer) instead of just the folder name (📁 Summer).
- A searchable shortcut reference on the website, generated from the app's own
help window so the two cannot drift apart.
Fixed
- The folder walk did nothing on some drives. If a volume had picked up the SYSTEM
attribute on its top-level folders — an old attrib +s, or a sync tool — the
subfolder filter dropped every one of them, so Alt + ← / → reported "No further
folder in that direction" in a folder with twenty siblings beside it. The filter now
tests only the HIDDEN attribute, which still excludes $RECYCLE.BIN and
System Volume Information.
- Base64 decode table race. The lookup table used by the remote protocol could be
built by two threads at once.
- Empty-query handling in Find now matches what the code actually guarantees.
- Several actions that could fail silently now say what happened, including the
"no further folder" message, which reports the position and count it refused on.

2.210.0.302 7 agosto 2026 — 64 bit Portable
Note di rilascio
Maintenance release focused on decoder safety, the empty-viewer rendering path, and diagnostics coverage.
Security and robustness
- Targa colour-map decoding: out-of-bounds read on a crafted file. A pixel index below the map's first index passed through the bounds test rather than failing it — both fields are uint16_t, so the subtraction promoted to a negative int and wrapped to near SIZE_MAX, and for a difference of exactly −1 the offset arithmetic wrapped back to zero. A file declaring cmFirst = 1 with a pixel index of 0 was enough to reach a wild pointer. The index is now rejected before the subtraction.
- PNM header fields no longer overflow. Width, height and maximum-value parsing accumulated with v = v * 10 + d, which is undefined behaviour on a long run of digits and, in a release build, wrapped to values that passed the range checks below it. Parsing now saturates at INT_MAX, which every caller already treats as a rejection.
- PNM samples are clamped before scaling. The ASCII variants (P1/P2/P3) read samples without reference to maxVal, so a malformed file could hand the scaler a value that overflowed on its way to a byte. Samples outside the declared range are clamped.
Rendering
- The empty-viewer placeholder, the folder overlay and the window title are now driven from a single composition rather than three code paths that could disagree about what is on screen.
- Folder overlay text layout is built once and reused instead of being recomposed per frame.
- Placeholder rendering is consistent between the Direct2D and GDI back ends.
Diagnostics
- Slideshow start and stop are recorded in the general log.
- The network log now covers the beacon, the blacklist, client and server lifecycle, and TLS handshake outcomes — arrivals, departures and refusals name the peer address and port, so two connections from one host can be told apart.
- Logging remains off by default and costs a single atomic read per record point while it is off.
Fixes
- Playlist sort order is applied consistently when the order is changed from the menu.
Documentation
- The supported-format tables in the README and on the site now list every format the application actually decodes, including JPEG XR, DDS, camera RAW (DNG/CR2/CR3/NEF/ARW), Targa and APNG, along with the extension aliases each accepts.
- The shortcut reference has been corrected across the help panel, the README and the site. Every colour effect requires Ctrl — the plain presses of those keys are navigation. The previous tables listed the bindings as they were before that change.
- Added the missing entries for Ctrl+F3 (clear the VRAM cache), U (thumbnail strip visual effects), Ctrl+Shift+Enter (push this position to every connected instance), Right Shift as an alternative directory-panel toggle, Ctrl+O in the Server Log panel, and the -slideshowTransitionSource, -slideshowTransitionOrder and -slideshowTransitions command-line switches.
- Documented the Announce (beacon) item in the TCP/IP menu.
- Removed a stale entry claiming F12 cleared the thumbnail cache; that moved to Ctrl+F3 when F12 became the mirroring toggle.
Installation
Single portable executable, 9.8 MB. Windows 10 or newer, x64.
The C runtime is linked statically — no Visual C++ Redistributable is required. Nothing is installed and nothing is written outside the registry keys the application uses for its own settings.
