This release fixes the Database Map on large databases. A scan reads the size and indexes of every collection before it checks a reference, and over a slow link that alone could use the whole time limit. Resume then started over each time, so the map never got past reading collections, and its timer counted the hours the scan sat stopped. Resume now carries on from where it stopped, and the timer counts only the time the scan ran. The map also gets Delete map, which starts it again and can keep the references you decided on. There is nothing to do before you update.
## Improved
• **Delete a database's map and start again** — Delete map, under Last scan, removes the scans and the references they found, and can keep the references you added or decided on.
## Fixed
### Database Map
• **Resume carries on a stopped Database Map scan** — On a large database every Resume started over and stopped at the same place, and the time shown counted the hours the scan sat stopped. |

This release is about how your collections connect, and using those connections while you query. The new Database Map scans a database, draws the references between its collections and can check each one against real values. On a scanned database, a result links to the document an id names, and autocomplete offers whole $lookup stages. The Schema view counts types and presence exactly and keeps the values you edit, and the sidebar refreshes from the row and says why a list is empty. Most fixes are to Escape, the aggregation builder and the log windows. There is nothing to do before you update.
Highlights
- Database Map — A new tab draws a database's collections and the references between them, with the evidence for each, and can check them against sampled values.
- Follow references from query results — On a scanned database, click a reference in a result to open its document beside it, and follow that document's references the same way.
- Autocomplete offers whole $lookup stages — Once a database is scanned, related collections and their join fields come first, and each reference is offered as a complete stage.
- Schema value edits are no longer lost — A new analysis keeps the values you added or removed, and the Schema view counts types and presence exactly.
- Refresh from a sidebar row — Hover a connection, database, collection or indexes row to refresh it and see when its list was last checked.
- Escape closes the innermost popup first — A suggestion list, menu, confirmation or code editor's find box closes alone, and the dialog under it stays open.
New
- Database Map — A tab that draws a database's collections and the references between them, shows the evidence for each, and can check them against sampled values before you confirm or dismiss them.
- Pro shows changes between Database Map scans — Pro keeps each scan's fields, so the map lists the collections, fields and types that are new since an earlier scan.
- Export the map — Save the Database Map as a PNG or SVG in any theme, a Mermaid ER diagram, a Markdown data dictionary or JSON, each with every field.
- Follow references from query results — On a scanned database, click a reference in a result to open its document beside it, and follow that document's references the same way.
- Fix a missing reference from results — Right-click a field to confirm the reference the scan guessed or to add one, even on a database never scanned, and its link appears at once.
- Autocomplete offers whole $lookup stages — Once a database is scanned, autocomplete lists related collections and their join fields first, and offers each reference as a complete $lookup stage.
- Detection rules are saved with the collection — The Schema view's Detection rules tab sets which fields get detected values, and every later analysis of the collection follows those rules.
Improved
- Refresh from a sidebar row — Connection, database, collection and indexes rows show a refresh button on hover that says when the list was last checked, and F5 refreshes the focused row.
- The sidebar says why a list is empty — A connection's icon shows whether it is open, and an open connection or database with nothing to show says it is empty, hidden by the filter or failed to load.
- The result export menu stays out of the way — Each format is one line with its note under the scope it explains, and the menu no longer covers a confirmation, runs off a short window or leaves fullscreen.
- Schema counts and types are exact — Each type shows its share, presence is an exact count, Int32, Double and Long are named apart, only mixed types are flagged, and array fields such as tags get values.
- Find and use a field — Filter the schema by name, type or value, see which fields are indexed, and copy a field's path or insert it into the query.
- Schemas stay fresh — With automatic analysis on, a referenced collection is re-analyzed once its schema is a day old or Monghoul wrote to it, and the Schema view says when it |

Most of this release is the theme editor. It is a library now, where a click applies a theme, and a new theme grows from one brand color. Styles, bases and accents repaint the whole app as you choose, four sliders move every color at once, and every edit can be undone. Operation Logs and AI Activity link to each other, keep your place and work from the keyboard.
Highlights
- Build a theme from one brand color — The New theme form starts from a brand, offers five styles, four bases and accent and surface choices, and paints the whole app as you choose.
- Global theme sliders — Hue, saturation, contrast and lightness sliders adjust every color in a theme at once, and hue and saturation moves keep the text contrast the theme had.
- The theme editor is a library — Clicking a theme applies it, and each theme's own menu customizes, duplicates, exports or deletes it.
- An AI-caused log links to its call — An operation log an assistant caused opens the call behind it in AI Activity, and the two windows link back and forth without stacking copies.
- The aggregation builder matches the app — Stages are rows of one outline that say their state in words, and the stage picker works from the keyboard.
- The log windows keep your place — Closing Report Issue or a linked window returns Operation Logs or AI Activity to the same filters, page, selection and scroll position.

- The theme editor is a library — Clicking a theme applies it, and each theme's own menu customizes, duplicates, exports or deletes it.
- Editing a built-in theme announces the copy — Customizing a built-in opens a draft named "Theme (Custom)" with a notice up front, and the save button says Create & apply.
- Undo in the theme editor — Every edit and slider drag is one undo step (Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+Shift+Z), and a hold-to-compare button shows the theme you started from.
- Pick a theme color from the screen — Each color field in the theme editor offers an eyedropper where the platform supports one.
- An AI-caused log links to its call — An operation log an assistant caused opens the call behind it in AI Activity, and the two windows link back and forth without stacking copies.
Improved
- Failed previews point at their cause — A failed stage preview names the earlier stage its message is about, and a collapsed $facet names its branches.
- The aggregation builder matches the app — Stages are rows of one outline that say their state in words, and the stage picker works from the keyboard.
- Font sizes step with buttons — The theme editor's font size fields gained minus and plus buttons, beside typing and the arrow keys.
- The log windows keep your place — Closing Report Issue or a linked window returns Operation Logs or AI Activity to the same filters, page, selection and scroll position.
- Operation Logs reads more clearly — Status shows as a shape rather than a second colored dot, a failure's error comes first, and Select, Compare and a More menu replace the unlabeled icons.
Accessibility
- The log lists work from the keyboard — Down arrow moves from the search box into the list, the selection stays in view, Page Down and Page Up turn the page, and ticked rows read as selected.
Fixed
Interface
- Code panels appear once, in the right font — The logs, cluster monitor, diff and aggregation panels flashed blank, then redrew in a different typeface and size, and the first editor after a restart painted on a white background.
- Clicking between logs keeps the detail panel — The Operation Logs pane blanked to "Loading details..." on every click and rebuilt the code panels it had just drawn, even though only the store |
| 1.12.3 | 19. september 2026 | — | 64-bit EXE (NSIS) UdgivelsesnoterMonghoul 1.12.3
Most of this release is the small things you look at every day. You could not tell whether a switch
was off. Some labels were too faint to read, including the banner that appears when the backend
stops. A button did not line up with the field beside it. None of that is a headline on its own,
and together it is most of what using Monghoul feels like. Toolbars also stop wrapping onto a
second line when a panel gets narrow, and several controls that keyboard users had no way to reach
are reachable now.
Highlights
- Switches show when they are off — The off state of every switch was too faint to see against its surroundings on all of the built-in themes.
- The server-lost banner is readable — The message shown when the backend stops, and the button that restarts it, were the hardest things to read on several themes.
- Cancelling a long job closes the dialog — Cancelling an import, an export or a data generation left the form sitting there as though nothing had happened.
- Toolbars stay on one line — The query, cluster monitor and users toolbars broke onto as many as four rows on a narrow panel.
- Connecting an assistant comes first — AI Access shows the server address and the configuration snippets as soon as access starts, above the permission settings.
- Hovering a theme colour makes it pulse — Everything that uses that colour brightens and dims, instead of flashing bright magenta.
Improved
- Toolbars stay on one line — The query, cluster monitor and users toolbars broke onto as many as four rows on a narrow panel. Each one now shortens its least useful control first.
- Controls that share a row now match — Across the dialogs, the licence window and the tab toolbars, buttons, pickers and toggles take the height, corner and edge of the field they sit with.
- A database rename shows progress and can be stopped — Stopping it leaves the original database untouched and a partial copy under the new name.
- Every tab says what kind it is — Each tab carries one icon for its kind, coloured by the connection it belongs to. Query and JSON tabs had no icon, and a Users tab never showed its connection.
- The cluster monitor's toolbar reads as one row — Pause now matches the controls beside it, and a green "Live" that only repeated what Pause said is gone.
- Cluster monitor colour means something is wrong — Trend lines took their colour from the set used for warnings, so a healthy cluster drew red and amber lines.
- A role's details open under its row — The panel on the right took a fixed third of the tab, which left the table almost nothing on a narrow panel. Roles with many privileges group by resource.
- Users and roles keep their order — Refreshing either list reshuffled every row.
- The users toolbar stops shouting — New User was the only filled button and the only bold label in its row, above a table that already colours a chip on every line.
- Generate Data's field settings line up with their field — Each setting sits under the field's name and carries a label, so opening one no longer breaks the column the list just taught you.
- Help is on the words it explains — Labels that have an explanation carry a dashed underline and show it on hover or keyboard focus, in place of the small icon beside them.
- A chosen option no longer looks like a button — Toggles painted their chosen side in the same colour as the button that acts, so a screen could show two green controls that did different things.
- Text from your database is not re-cased — A replica set's name and the operation chips in the cluster monitor were shouted in capitals.
- Create User and Create Role open narrower — Both were wide enough to leave a long gap between a group's name and the control at the end of its row.
- Connecting an assistant comes first — AI Access shows the server address and the configuration snippets as soon as access starts, above the permission settings.
- Hovering a theme colour makes it pulse — Everything that uses that colour brightens |

Linux gets an AppImage, and with it the automatic updates every other platform already had. It
also gets its icon back:the desktop entry pointed at an icon that was never installed, so Linux
has been showing a placeholder in the launcher since March. The rest tightens how queries run and
changes how often Monghoul confirms your licence. Most of that is edge cases you are unlikely to
have met.
## New
• **AppImage for Linux** — Monghoul now ships an AppImage beside the .deb and .rpm, and it updates itself the way the Windows and macOS builds do.
## Fixed
### Linux
• **The launcher shows the Monghoul icon** — The desktop entry named an icon that was never installed, so the .deb and .rpm showed a generic placeholder.
### Query and Results
• **Stopping a query is more reliable** — Stop and the query timeout now reach some operations that kept running after you asked them to stop.
• **Write protection is applied more consistently** — A protected connection refuses writes on every route a query can take to the database.
• **A query that overruns its timeout says so** — The result reports the timeout instead of reporting success. |
| 1.12.1 | 12. september 2026 | — | 64-bit EXE (NSIS) UdgivelsesnoterMonghoul 1.12.1
This release fixes one defect in 1.12.0. A connection can be told not to save query results, and
in 1.12.0 that setting also emptied the result panel: the query ran, the row count and the timings
arrived, and the documents were nowhere. They are shown again now, for as long as the app is open,
and they still never reach the local database. Nothing else changed, so update only if you use that
setting or mean to.
Fixed
Query and Results
- Results show even when they are not saved — Turning "Save query results" off emptied the result panel on every run, not only after a restart. The rows are shown while the app is open, and still never saved. |
| 1.12.0 | 12. september 2026 | — | 64-bit EXE (NSIS) UdgivelsesnoterMonghoul 1.12.0
This release is mostly about connections and the credentials they carry. Your operating system now holds the key that encrypts saved passwords, the connection string no longer keeps a password in clear text, and the stored licence key is encrypted too. AWS IAM authentication connects, AWS credentials can come from the machine's own configuration, and a connection can run through a SOCKS5 proxy. Away from connections, every built-in theme takes colours fitted for contrast, write protection now covers creating a database or a collection, and the query editor no longer marks valid aggregation stages as errors. Three changes need a moment before you update.
Highlights
- Credentials are protected by your system keychain — Your operating system holds the encryption key, so a copy of the app database cannot be read on another machine.
- The connection string no longer stores your password — A saved URI kept its credentials in clear text. They are taken out on save and put back on connect.
- AWS IAM authentication works — Connecting with an AWS access key was refused before it reached the server. It connects now.
- AWS credentials can come from the machine — Leave both AWS key fields empty and Monghoul uses the instance role, single sign-on session or AWS profile already configured.
- A connection through a SOCKS5 proxy works — A connection string naming a proxy host connects through it, with a proxy username and password where the proxy asks for them.
- Write protection covers creating, too — Creating a database or a collection inside protected scope went through without a word. It asks first now.
- The Monghoul themes are calmer — The dark theme's brand green, chart series, type colours and JSON syntax are each fitted to a measured contrast.
Before you update
- The free operation-log window is 250 entries in total — Filtering used to reach a further 250 entries for each filter, so the real limit was higher than the stated one. Nothing is deleted, and Pro reads the whole store.
- Markdown notes no longer render embedded HTML — An image or GIF pasted as an <img> tag stops appearing in the preview. Write it as instead, which is unaffected.
- Saved passwords stay on this device — Your operating system now holds the key that encrypts them, so copying the app's data folder to another machine does not carry the credentials. Re-enter them there and they save normally.
New
- Credentials are protected by your system keychain — Your operating system holds the encryption key, so a copy of the app database cannot be read elsewhere. Without a credential store the older, weaker key is used, and Settings says which applies.
- AWS credentials can come from the machine — Leave both AWS key fields empty and Monghoul uses the instance role, single sign-on session or AWS profile already configured, the way the AWS command line does.
- A connection through a SOCKS5 proxy works — A connection string naming a proxy host connects through it, with a proxy username and password where the proxy asks for them.
- A connection string can forget its password — "Save password" now appears in Connection String mode, and unticking it removes the password from the string and from disk. Monghoul asks for it at connect time instead.
- A favorite query can say what it is for — A favorite carries an optional description, and the command palette shows it beside the name.
- A chart can sort by label or any field — Sort by now offers the category name and any Y field, where sorting used to rank the categories by the first series and nothing else.
- Settings has a place to leave a review — The app menu opens a public discussion thread, and you leave a review as a comment there. Bug reports and feature requests still go to the repository link beside it.
Improved
- Write protection covers creating, too — Creating a database or a collection inside protected scope went through without a word. It asks first now, and declining creates nothing.

| 1.11.0 | 5. september 2026 | — | 64-bit EXE (NSIS) UdgivelsesnoterMonghoul 1.11.0
This release is about the query editor knowing MongoDB. Autocomplete was improved to cover every 8.x operator and to answer with what the cursor position actually accepts, down to an operator's own options and their permitted values. Alongside it, AI Access grows a mode that returns results without touching your workspace, write protection closes the paths that got around it, and the interface stops breaking in a narrow or short window. There are fixes here for silent failures: a confirmed write that did nothing, an import that duplicated rows, a timeout reported as something you had cancelled.
Highlights
- Autocomplete knows MongoDB 8.x — all 49 pipeline stages, every expression, accumulator and window operator, and each operator's own options with their permitted values.
- Suggestions match the position — a $match predicate, a $project value and an options bag each get the family MongoDB accepts there, and nothing else.
- Hybrid search is in the editor — $rankFusion, $scoreFusion and $score, with working templates.
- An assistant can query without opening tabs — and can see which connections are write-protected before it asks.
- Write protection covers more paths — collection validators, sibling databases, and the write stages that used to slip past it.
- The interface holds together in a small window — panels, drawers, modals and dialogs.
- An import no longer duplicates rows — one document without an _id used to turn its whole batch into plain inserts.
New
- Every MongoDB 8.x operator is suggested — autocomplete now covers all 49 pipeline stages, every expression, accumulator and window operator, the geospatial shapes and the array update modifiers.
- Hybrid search is in the editor — $rankFusion, $scoreFusion and $score are offered with working templates, in the code editor and in the visual pipeline builder.
- The shell's database helpers work — getCollection, getSiblingDB, getCollectionNames, getCollectionInfos, runCommand, adminCommand, version and getName are on db, and are awaited rather than read directly.
- Write protection covers validators and siblings — changing a collection's validator on a protected connection asks first, because a validator is a guard on the data; and db.getSiblingDB() is scoped by that database's own settings.
- An assistant can see what is write-protected — listing connections now reports which ones are protected and what the protection covers, so it can say a query will need your approval instead of springing one.
- An assistant can query without opening tabs — a new AI Access setting returns results straight to it and leaves the workspace alone. Queries needing approval, and destructive ones on a protected connection, still open a tab.
- Close all the tabs an AI client opened — a tab's context menu counts every tab an MCP client left behind, across the whole window, and closes them in one action.
Improved
- First run asks for one thing — it opened with four switches and a dropdown; it now asks only about anonymous analytics, with what is and is not collected stated in full rather than on hover.
- Autocomplete goes a level deeper — an operator's own options are offered inside it, required first, and so are their fixed values, a $jsonSchema's keywords, Atlas Search clause keys and $meta's metadata.
- Controls in a row are set alike — one filled control per row and it is the one that acts, a md field no longer renders two pixels under the button beside it, and a control's outline stops going near-white in dark themes.
- A Pro control offers the upgrade — the Chart view and Show Diff responded only from the small PRO badge inside them, and picking a Pro authentication method did nothing at all: no message, no upgrade path.
- Empty states say what to do next — a run that matched nothing says so and whether an index was used, the empty workspace offers the new-tab control, and the command palette states emptiness once rather than three ways.
- Document Diff steps through the diff |
| 1.10.0 | 30. august 2026 | — | 64-bit EXE (NSIS) UdgivelsesnoterMonghoul 1.10.0
This release is mostly about AI access — letting an assistant work with your databases without
letting it work unsupervised. You choose what it can reach before you switch it on, anything
permanent stops and asks you first, and everything it has done is kept in a trail you can read
after a restart. A query an assistant writes opens in an ordinary tab, so you can read and edit
it before it runs. The rest of the release went to Ctrl+K, which now previews what you are about
to open, to dragging tabs into splits, and to keyboard and screen-reader support across the app.
Servers older than MongoDB 4.4 no longer connect, so check yours before you update.
Highlights
- You choose what an assistant can reach — In AI Access you pick the connections, the tool groups and the individual tools it may use. A new setup starts with nothing selected.
- Permanent actions stop and ask — Deleting a connection, copying a database or running query code waits for your approval, names what it will touch, and declines itself if you ignore it.
- An assistant's query opens in a tab — Read it, edit it, and approve exactly what is on screen. Declining leaves you an ordinary tab to keep working in.
- A trail of everything an assistant did — The AI Activity window keeps the newest 1,000 calls with their arguments, outcomes and your decisions, and survives a restart.
- Ctrl+K shows what you are about to open — A preview pane beside the list, plus > for commands, @ to jump to a collection and # to a database.
- Drag a tab to an edge to split — The half the new panel will take is previewed and named before you let go.
- Bold text is bold again — Every font weight in the app had been rendering as normal, so headings, labels and buttons all came out without emphasis.
Before you update
- Two actions start asking for approval — Saving or testing a connection now counts as reaching your databases. Neither destroys anything, but both dial, and store credentials for, an address the assistant supplied.
- MongoDB 4.2 and older servers are no longer supported — The MongoDB driver Monghoul ships was updated, and it refuses a server below 4.4, so connecting to one now fails with an error instead of opening.
New
- Permanent actions ask first — Monghoul sorts every tool into read, reversible or permanent, and the permanent ones wait for your approval. Reads always run, and reversible changes are allowed by default.
- AI Access sets what an assistant can reach — Its settings open as a three-step flow: pick the connections and tools an assistant may reach, copy its configuration, start access. A new setup starts with nothing selected.
- The AI panel — A panel docked beside your workspace holding what is waiting for your decision, a live feed of what an assistant is doing, and which assistants are connected.
- An assistant's query opens in a tab — The tab names what is waiting, and approving runs exactly what is on screen at that moment. Declining leaves you an ordinary tab.
- An AI Activity window — The newest 1,000 calls an assistant made, filtered by tool, outcome, connection or time and kept across restarts, with links to the operation log and the tab a call opened.
- A write-protected connection needs an override — An assistant's request against one always asks, whatever your permissions say, and Approve stays unavailable until you separately tick the override beside it.
- Allow a tool for the rest of a session — Approving the fourth clone in a row means "stop interrupting me", not "you may do this forever". The grant ends with the assistant and never reaches disk.
- You choose what the trail keeps — By default it records the connection, the collection and the query text, credentials redacted. A metadata-only level drops the query text for anyone whose queries carry values.
- Drag a tab to an edge to split — Rest on the left, right, top or bottom edge and the panel divides, with the side you aimed at previewed and named before you let go.
- Ctrl+K previews |
| 1.9.2 | 25. august 2026 | — | 64-bit EXE (NSIS) UdgivelsesnoterMonghoul 1.9.2
## Improved
• **A detached window respects the interface zoom** — a tab detached while the interface was at 125% opened a window at 100%, with no zoom keyboard shortcut and no scroll gesture to change it. Zoom is one app-wide level now:a detached window opens at the level in effect, can change it, and the other open windows follow.
• **A collection can be opened from the keyboard** — Space on the focused row in the connection tree opens it in a query tab, the same action a double click performs. Enter still expands and collapses. The sidebar's most-used action needed a mouse until now.
• **Monghoul gives back the disk it stopped using** — the app database never returned deleted pages to the filesystem and its write-ahead log never shrank once it had grown, so a long-running install could reach hundreds of megabytes while holding a couple of megabytes of actual data. Startup now caps the log and compacts the database when it is overwhelmingly empty space. An ordinary database is left untouched.
• **The theme you get on a fresh install is now yours to keep** — Monghoul picked light or dark from the system on first launch and then never wrote the choice down, so it re-derived it at every start:changing the operating system's appearance later silently moved the app with it, even though the theme picker offers concrete themes and no "System" entry. The first launch records the theme it picked, and it stays until you change it in the app.
## Performance
• **Switching to a query tab opens its connection ahead of the first query** — the connection was established by the query itself, so on a remote server the first run of the day paid a TLS handshake and authentication on top of its own time. That now happens in the background when you switch to the tab. It only runs on a deliberate switch, so reopening a saved workspace still connects to nothing until you ask it to, and a connection waiting on its session password is left alone rather than prompting because you clicked a tab.
• **A large JSON import no longer has to fit in memory** — importing JSON read the entire file into a string and then into a document array, which cost roughly ten times the file size in memory and made the app refuse anything over 500 MB. It is streamed now:memory stays flat at about 120 MB whether the file is 150 MB, 300 MB or 600 MB, where before a 300 MB dump peaked at 3.1 GB and a 600 MB one was refused outright. JSON arrays, NDJSON, concatenated JSON and gzipped dumps all stream; progress counts bytes of the file instead of documents, and a document that will not parse is now skipped and counted rather than failing the whole import. Excel imports are unchanged and still read the whole workbook.
• **A large CSV import no longer has to fit in memory** — importing a CSV read the entire file into memory first, so the largest file Monghoul could import was bounded by RAM rather than by patience. It is streamed now:memory stays flat at about 140 MB whether the file is 230 MB or 464 MB, where before it tracked the file size. Excel imports are unchanged and still read the whole workbook. The progress bar counts bytes of the file instead of documents, since a streaming read cannot know the row total without reading the file twice.
## Interface
• **Search matches are one colour everywhere, and it is no longer the selection colour** — the table and tree result views drew a match in the same colour as a selected row, so a match inside a selection was nearly invisible; the sidebar, command palette and logs modal drew it in the warning colour instead. All five now use a dedicated highlight colour that custom themes can set. A theme that does not set it keeps the colour it had.
## Accessibility
• **The tab strip's "all tabs" button has a name** — the `⋯` button that lists every open tab was an icon with no label, so a screen reader announced only "button" and the one route to a tab scrolled out of view was unidentifiable. It is named now, and |
