Udgivelsesnoter
1.6.0 makes saves, backups, updates and recordings safer, speeds up offline transcription, and adds Lock now, Quick note, folder import, search filters and backup checks.
Fixed
- Failed saves preserve unsaved edits for retry or text/RTF export, block actions that would discard them, and save note content, links, history and sketches together.
- A failed password change keeps the original database and complete recovery copies, reports temporary copies it cannot remove, and can be retried right away.
- Reordering or canceling a note drag no longer leaves an unencrypted copy of the note in the temp folder; files for drags out of the app are cleared on the next start.
- Sketches and recordings stay editable and playable through saving, floating, printing, copying and pasting into any note or database, and when other images are added or removed. Restoring a version brings back the drawings and takes it was saved with, and recordings lost by earlier versions reappear at the end of their note.
- Install, update and uninstall keep databases and other files inside the installation folder. Self-updates no longer run a script from the temp folder: administrator updates show KillerNotes in the approval prompt and verify the update in protected staging, a failed update keeps complete copies of the program and a recovery report, install handoffs wait for the previous app to exit, and silent installs and updates return retryable code 1618 while KillerNotes is running.
- Backups: each notepad keeps its own last-backup time and retention, even when two share a name, ambiguous older backups are kept, and long database names work. Before, switching notepads made the other one look never backed up, so it backed up again at once.
- Offline transcription is several times faster again: the speech engine update had shipped a baseline-only CPU build. The engine is no longer inside the app; it downloads with the first speech model, in the build for the processor (AVX2, AVX, SSE4.2 or baseline), checked against pinned hashes. Transcription starts correctly, keeps its settings, and opens models from folders with non-English names, and models downloaded by earlier versions are moved into one shared folder instead of downloaded again.
- A failed export leaves the file already at that name untouched instead of a partial copy. HTML export and rich copy encode link addresses safely and keep only web and email links live; other links keep their text.
- Renaming or deleting a tag updates every note or none of them when a write fails.
- Replace and Replace All preserve formatting, embedded content and regex captures across paragraph breaks, support one-step undo, and reload the open note even when it leaves the search results. (#14)
- Formatting shortcuts, inserts and dictation no longer change notes in the Trash or in a database open read-only, and say why.
- Search, Find in this note, the title-bar match count, wikilinks and the CLI all match text the same way: case and how a letter was typed never matter in any language, accents always do. "café" finds "CAFÉ", and Greek or Cyrillic titles link regardless of case. Regex Find stops a runaway pattern after one second and says so, without changing the note.
- Markdown notes keep list and table text when saving, keep tables as tables when converted to rich text, and paste rich content as plain text.
- Pasting tidies only the pasted content, leaving the rest of the note's spacing and table colors alone, and HTML with a cut-off script or style tag no longer freezes the app. Highlighted text keeps its dark text on yellow after reopening or pasting, in every theme.
- Delete and Backspace remove a selected image, inline or floated, instead of the character beside it.
- Imported notes show their links, backlinks and graph edges right away, and notes imported earlier are indexed on the next open.
- Switching databases clears Back and Forward history; reopening the same database preserves it.
- CLI and MCP: a client that
1.5.1 19. oktober 2026 — 64-bit EXE
Udgivelsesnoter
Added
- Added a right-hand position for the sidebar and its rail, picked from the rail's right-click menu or with Alt+Shift+Left and Alt+Shift+Right. The arrow of the side the sidebar is already on collapses or expands it.
- Rail buttons can be dragged into any order, which is remembered. Theme, language and shortcuts stay together at the bottom of the rail.
- The create and update commands take --content-file for Markdown longer than a command line can hold.
- Installed copies add their folder to PATH, so commands such as killernotes list run from any new terminal. killernotes --help lists commands, and --cli stays compatible. Portable copies run from their folder or full path. Uninstalling removes the installed PATH entry.
- Added Start with Windows to the About card. It starts KillerNotes minimized on the taskbar when you sign in, and stays off until you turn it on.
- Added Close to system tray to the About card. With it on, closing the window keeps KillerNotes running in the notification area, where its icon brings the window back or exits; it stays off until you turn it on.
- The shortcuts overlay lists Ctrl+Tab, which moves keyboard focus out of the note while Tab keeps typing in it.
- Alt+Shift+G turns Film Grain on or off. It is listed in the shortcuts overlay, and the keyboard map has a new Alt+Shift layer for it.
- The website's top bar has a Microsoft Store button on every page, and the MCP page has a Microsoft Store button for KillerMCP.
- The website's About page lists KillerBench and KillerShot under Also try, with larger app icons.
Changed
- Film grain is softer and shows on every theme, Black included. Its specks come in many shades, and some lean toward a color opposite the theme accent, such as purple on green and orange-brown on blue and red.
- Rail buttons and the collapse arrow sit centered across the rail on either side, with the same space toward the sidebar and the edge, and the arrow is larger. The side choices in the rail's right-click menu show a picture of each position.
- Note titles in the sidebar are slightly larger, so they stand apart from the preview line and date under them.
- The New note button is filled with the theme accent so it stands out from the quieter sort buttons, and shrinks to + before the sort buttons would wrap under it.
- The sidebar starts 20px wider, and the width you drag it to is remembered the next time KillerNotes opens.
- The website's top bar Download button uses the same font and height as the other top bar buttons.
- The keyboard focus outline is a thin one-pixel dotted ring in the theme accent instead of a thick dotted line, and uses the text color where the accent would be too faint to see.
- Primary, outline and secondary buttons sit raised on a soft shadow that lifts on hover and sets down when pressed. 98SE keeps its flat beveled buttons.
Fixed
- Shared notes and imported databases keep editable sketches and embedded audio; notes made from templates keep their audio too.
- Editing a recording stays with its original note, even after switching notes, and cannot replace audio in another database.
- Network databases reserve one writer before changes begin, and a crashed app releases the reservation.
- Backups made in the same minute keep separate snapshots, and a failed backup does not replace an earlier copy.
- Importing a shared note or database is all or nothing, so a file that fails partway no longer leaves some of its notes behind.
- Malformed MCP requests no longer crash the app, and a client that stalls mid-request no longer blocks later CLI and MCP commands.
- Windows contrast themes now use system colors, including custom note and group titles, without changing saved colors or theme preferences.
- The cursor can no longer land inside a horizontal rule, so text typed after moving up or down past a rule no longer comes out tiny (#28).
- The window opens fully on screen on a small or high-scaling display, or when its saved size came from a bigger monitor, in
1.5.0 15. oktober 2026 — 64-bit EXE
Udgivelsesnoter
Added
- Pasting tab separated, space separated or CSV data into a table fills its cells from the caret, adding rows and columns as needed.
- Right-clicking in a table opens a Table menu to insert rows above or below, insert columns left or right, and delete a row, a column or the whole table. Each action also has a shortcut, Ctrl+Shift+1 to 4 for inserting and Ctrl+Shift+7 to 9 for deleting.
- Added a Film Grain switch to the theme menu. It is on by default, and turning it off removes the grain texture from every surface.
- Added the Windows 11 snap layouts menu to the maximize button.
- KillerNotes checks for updates on startup and offers a newer release in a dialog with an Always check on startup box. A Check for updates on startup checkbox on the About card turns the check back on.
Changed
- The wordmarks use Punktype and Lacquer, the sidebar group and Trash headings use Lacquer, and the interface text and footers use Killer Sans, in place of the typewriter font in the app and on the website.
- Confirm, install and uninstall dialogs use the family setup dialog layout, with a notice icon, a larger Lacquer heading and evenly sized buttons.
- The Malaise theme's note pane is a shade darker than the window around it, in the app and on the website.
- Every context-menu action shows an icon beside its keyboard shortcut, including the graph, SketchPad, recording, format bar and file picker menus, and the syntax, word wrap and spell check rows keep their icon in the same column as the rest.
- The Light theme draws a softer shadow under the toolbars.
Fixed
- On the 98SE theme, the interface, sidebar, menus and dialog captions use Microsoft Sans Serif instead of Killer Sans and Tahoma.
- Cut and copy finish as soon as the text is on the clipboard instead of stalling for seconds and reporting a busy clipboard, and right-clicking a large selection opens the menu promptly (#19).
- A table copied from a web page, Excel or Word pastes as a table with all of its rows, instead of as lines of text.
- Selecting a table and pressing Delete or Backspace removes the table instead of leaving an empty grid behind.
- In Split preview the window can no longer be made narrow enough to push the preview past its right edge at larger app zoom levels or with the sidebar and outline open.
- Silent installs refuse an exe without a valid signature and exit with a specific Windows code when another install is already running, access is denied, the disk is full or the install is cancelled, instead of always exiting with 1.
- A silent install started without admin rights, as the Microsoft Store runs it, installs for the current user with no prompt instead of failing.
- Chocolatey uninstalls run the silent uninstaller and fail with its exit code instead of opening the uninstall prompt.
- Icon-only buttons give screen readers the name from their tooltip, including tooltips with formatted text, and controls reached with the keyboard show a dotted focus outline, drawn just outside small icon buttons so it no longer covers the icon.
- Search highlights stay visible after replacing a match without needing to scroll (#27).
- Kept app icons sharp at fractional display DPI and app zoom by caching exact pixel sizes from a covering source and aligning the final draw to device pixels.
- Mixed notes highlight commands independently of prose and separators, including pasted lines within one paragraph.
- Submenus attach consistently to their opening rows, with native direction and screen-edge placement.
- The active sort button is filled with the selection color, so it stands out in the Light, 98SE, Greed and Cyanotic themes (#25).
- Installed Apps lists Steve the Killer as the publisher after an update, instead of keeping the old "Steve / thekiller.net" label from the first install.
- Dialog title wordmarks keep the main window's dark halo behind the app name on the Light theme's Yellow accent, so the yellow no longer fades into the title bar.
- Active and hovered sidebar r

Fixed
- Cross-note find skips results without a matching body hit, including title-only matches and unreadable notes (#18).
- Font-size slider drags apply the final size once on release, keeping large selections responsive while dragging (#19).
- Sidebar sort mode and direction are remembered between launches and kept when creating notes (#25).
- Moving notes between groups keeps the sidebar at its current scroll position (#17).
- Light wordmarks match the family shadow settings. Only the yellow accent keeps its shadow.
- Rail right-click menus align 8 pixels from the side and bottom content edges.

1.4.1 7. oktober 2026 — 64-bit Portabel
Udgivelsesnoter
1.4.1 improves keyboard access, note scrolling and theme contrast.
Fixed
- Trash retention is configurable in Manage Databases, including an option to disable automatic cleanup (#20).
- Dialog fields, tag controls, Help, About, Fonts, the outline, templates and table picker support keyboard and screen-reader use, with focus restored on close (#22). (Thanks @digitaldarragh)
- Note scrolling matches the sidebar's wheel speed, including at different editor zoom levels.
- Shared theme colors, dropdown highlights, footers, title styling and shadows match the family palette, including cream Blood, Greed and Cyanotic wordmarks. Database selection text stays readable across gradient fills. Rail flyouts sit 8 pixels from the rail and bottom content edges.
- Light/Yellow uses true yellow for the wordmark, accent lines and radio buttons, with neutral dark text instead of olive brown. Only the yellow wordmark accent has a shadow.
- 98SE Red is a true maroon again, so it no longer looks like Magenta.
- Moved the shortcuts guide link away from the close button.
- Technical diagrams remain readable in the two-column layout and when enlarged (#23).

1.4.0 6. oktober 2026 — 64-bit Portabel
Udgivelsesnoter
1.4.0 replaces the legacy preview engine, adds outgoing links and code highlighting, and improves editing, recovery, and navigation.
Added
- Keyboard access now covers note actions, dialogs, and tools, including database context menus, with matching menu hints and a synchronized shortcut guide; the CLI adds sharing, export, templates, recovery, groups, tags, and backups.
- The note's link strip now includes outgoing links, including targets that do not exist yet.
- Fenced Markdown code blocks use their declared language for syntax highlighting.
- A dimmed loading overlay shows while the startup database and initial note open, hiding the empty-note prompt until loading finishes.
- Dragging a note to the top or bottom edge of the notes list scrolls it, so groups out of view can be reached.
- Ukrainian, Norwegian (Bokmål), and Brazilian Portuguese localization.
- Added a silent uninstall, /uninstall-silent, registered as the quiet uninstall so WinGet and other package managers can remove KillerNotes without a prompt.
- Added yellow and magenta accents to the neutral and 98SE themes.
- Syntax audit logs include timing for tokenizing, resolving positions, painting, and complete highlight passes.
Changed
- The markdown and HTML preview is now drawn by the app itself instead of the Internet Explorer engine, so it follows the theme and grain and keeps its rounded corners.
- Hover descriptions and shortcuts appear on separate wrapped rows; the format bar has a right-click menu, with heading levels available directly.
- The language menu shows its 19 languages in two columns with a faint divider that fades at both ends.
- Selected states, accent picker pills, and filled or hovered buttons use gradients outside 98SE; accent swatches lift subtly on hover, Light buttons have softer gray borders, and yellow wordmarks match their accent.
- Menu rows now show accent text and icons on the theme's hover color.
- Line numbers use a numbered-row icon to distinguish them from the heading outline.
- Toolbar and link-strip chevrons match the sidebar's color-only hover; the link-strip chevron reverses when folded.
Fixed
- Pressing F4 to leave the preview no longer crashes with an "Unknown Hard Error".
- Cross-note replacement handles formatted text correctly and keeps links accurate through undo (#14).
- Read-only notebooks reject checklist and heading changes.
- Restoring the oldest saved version works when history is full.
- Restoring an older note title offers to update incoming links through the rename dialog.
- Templates and daily notes use the latest title edits immediately.
- Previews render Markdown and HTML together and preserve angle-bracket placeholders and code examples.
- Removed the preview's inset frame and restored dragging its split-view divider.
- The mouse wheel scrolls the notes list a full step per notch again and scrolls the note under the pointer after sidebar selection.
- Text stays sharp at app sizes other than 100%.
- Pinned places in the file picker can be dragged into a new order.
- Ctrl+wheel changes picker views and icon sizes, and image previews keep their texture and thumbnail shadow.
- Fixed picker, dialog, Graph, and SketchPad frame corners, close-button hover contrast, and the corner alignment of SketchPad and Dictation close buttons.
- Restored slider tracks and corrected note and group title, database, dialog, menu, toolbar, and footer contrast, with quieter themed footers and subtle gray Delirium dividers.
- The notes list keeps rounded selection corners at narrow widths and no longer fades its last row at the bottom.
- The shortcuts list uses the keyboard map's category colors throughout, with the in-note find section in the left column and an aligned online help link in both views.
- Selected language and theme rows keep the active accent on hover.
- The theme picker's divider updates when switching themes.
- The theme menu's Fonts row has compact spacing and a faint fading divider; 98SE keeps flat accent swatc
1.3.2 1. oktober 2026 — 64-bit Portabel
Udgivelsesnoter
1.3.2 polishes copy and paste, markdown conversion, the markdown and HTML preview, and undo.
Added
- A mode button on the format bar shows whether the preview is in Source, Rendered or Split view, and cycles it like F4.
- The divider between the note and the preview in Split view can be dragged to change their widths.
- A chevron on the linked-from strip folds it into the corner of the note with a short slide, leaving its count to reopen it.
- Home, End, Page Up, Page Down and the arrow keys scroll the rendered preview. Ctrl+Home / End now appears in the F1 shortcut list.
Fixed
- Copied text now keeps its links, lists and emphasis when pasted into browsers, mail clients and Office.
- Pasting web or chat text with links now keeps its paragraphs instead of joining them into one.
- Converting a note to markdown no longer puts a backslash before every underscore, asterisk and bracket.
- Holding Ctrl+Z no longer undoes several organizational actions at once.
- Markdown notes always offer the preview and F4, even when their text has no headings, links or bold.
- F4 now works after clicking into the preview.
- Copy on a note image now places the image on the clipboard.
- The preview now fills its pane to the edges, with rounded corners, film grain and a slim scrollbar that match the editor.
- The outline pane now runs to the edges of the note with film grain and a rounded bottom corner like the rest of the editor.
- SketchPad no longer opens with a horizontal scrollbar. The blank sheet fills the window it opens in.
- On Greed, Blood and Cyanotic, menus and the format bar now sit a clear step darker than the window instead of blending into it.
- The boxes inside About now use the same color as the note pane, so About reads like the app: dark frame, lighter content.
- The database name in the title bar is white in the 98SE theme.

1.3.1 28. september 2026 — 64-bit Portabel
Udgivelsesnoter
1.3.1 adds backups and recovery, version history, trash, reusable note workflows, and deep KillerMCP integration.
Added
- Scheduled backups: Manage databases gains a Backups dialog to pick a folder, an interval and how many copies to keep. Copies are the database as it is, password and all, and one can be restored as a new database. Alt+B takes a copy right away.
- Version history: earlier versions of a note are kept as you work, one per sitting plus one before any conversion or replace-all, up to 50. Alt+H or the right-click menu shows them with a preview and puts one back.
- Deleted notes now go to a Trash section at the bottom of the sidebar, where they open read-only and can be restored or deleted permanently. Anything left there for 30 days is purged. Alt+Delete opens the trash (#20).
- Note templates: mark a group as the templates group from its right-click menu, and every note in it appears under "New note from template" and on Alt+T. {date}, {time}, {datetime} and {weekday} in a template are filled in on the way.
- Daily notes: Alt+D opens the note titled with today's date, creating it in a daily notes group of your choosing and from a template named Daily when you have one.
- Headings and an outline: Alt+1, 2 and 3 make a line a heading, Alt+0 puts it back, and the H button on the format bar steps through them. Alt+O opens an outline of the note's headings beside it; click one to jump there. Headings now export to markdown as headings.
- KillerMCP can search, inspect, create, edit, organize, color, import, and export notes through the open app.
- Italian, Russian, Kazakh, and Vietnamese localizations bring the complete app interface and killernotes.net to 16 languages.
- Checkbox lines: Alt+C or the format bar puts a box at the start of the line, a click ticks it, and Enter carries on to the next one. They export as markdown task lists and import back.
- Notes can be pinned to the top of their group or of the loose notes, from the right-click menu or Alt+P.
- F3 and Shift+F3 now continue through matching notes instead of wrapping inside one note (#18).
- The title bar now shows which notes database is open.
Changed
- Technical page diagrams now use portrait layouts so their labels stay readable in the two-column page.
- On first launch, the interface follows the Windows display language when it is supported.
- An open Markdown or HTML preview now refreshes as its source changes without losing its scroll position.
- The shortcut list now focuses on app-specific commands instead of repeating standard Windows editing keys.
- Standalone install and uninstall dialogs use Black/Purple; installer errors use themed dialogs. Installed Apps identifies the publisher as Steve the Killer.
Fixed
- Screen readers now identify the note list, editor, title, window controls, icon buttons, sorting controls, and custom dialog controls instead of announcing unlabeled glyphs or model class names (#22).
- Chocolatey package now installs the app instead of leaving the download in the Chocolatey tools folder.
- Maximizing or restoring the window now keeps the same part of a long note in view (#21).
- The font-size slider now stays responsive while formatting large selections (#19).
- Dropping a note directly onto a group now always moves it into that group (#17).
- Import, export, sharing and database export now use the family file picker, with complete filename tooltips.
- On the Sepulchre and Mourning themes the theme picker's radio ring, dot and label no longer vanish into the row's hover highlight; they turn white while hovered.

1.3.0 26. august 2026 — 64-bit Portabel
Udgivelsesnoter
1.3.0 is the release where notes start pointing at each other - wikilinks, backlinks and a graph - alongside markdown notes with a whole-database markdown export, search and replace, and two more languages.
Added
- Hungarian and Polish localization for the complete app interface and killernotes.net, the eleventh and twelfth languages. Every one of the twelve now carries all 682 interface keys, so search and replace, the network-lock warnings, markdown notes, the markdown export, wikilinks and the link graph read in your own language rather than falling back to English.
- A network data folder now warns once, and a lock file beside the database guards concurrent use: a database in use on another computer opens read-only instead of competing for SQLite's single writer, with the owning machine named. A clean close clears the lock.
- Text labels inside sketches now feed the search index, so a label like "IDF-2, port 14" makes its note findable.
- Search and replace (#14): Ctrl+H adds a replace row to the find bar with match-case, whole-word and regex options; Replace All in a note is a single undo step. The sidebar gains replace-across-all-notes behind a confirmation naming each note and its match count, committed in one transaction and undone with one Ctrl+Z.
- Notes can now be markdown instead of rich text. A markdown note stores its source text, edits as plain text with markdown syntax highlighting, and converts to and from rich text from the note menu; converting to markdown lists what will not survive before it runs. Images, tables, sketches and embedded recordings are refused in a markdown note rather than being dropped at the next save.
- Export all notes as markdown writes the whole database to a folder of .md files, groups as subfolders and tags in YAML front matter. Rich-text notes convert on the way out and nothing in the database changes.
- Grab cursors sized to match the standard Windows pointers: an open hand over anything that can be picked up and a closed hand while it is being carried, on the format bar, the find bar, floated images, the SketchPad's select tool and the dialog title bars.
- A crash now leaves a log behind, appended to crash.log under %APPDATA%\KillerNotes.
- Notes can link to each other. Type [[ and pick a note from the list, Ctrl+Click to follow the link, and a link to a note that does not exist yet offers to create it. A strip tucked into the bottom right of the note lists everything pointing at it, alongside notes that name it without linking it - click one of those to make the link, Ctrl+Click to just go there. Alt+M hides the strip.
- A graph of every link in the notebook, on the sidebar rail. Nodes are colored by their group and sized by how much links to them; titles that are linked but not yet written show as outlines. Drag one node or a whole selection and the rest move out of the way while you hold them. Five arrangements: by connection, in a circle, in a grid, by group, and rings by distance from a chosen note. Pin all Notes (P) keeps every note where it is put; turn it off and the notes it links to move out of the way as you drag. Visualizer (V) leaves the graph drifting and slowly turning on its own, shuffling between six shapes as it goes; N skips ahead, and a Shape menu appears in the right-click menu while it runs to pick one directly. Right-click for the rest, including "show only what links here".
- The SketchPad opens a large image scaled to fit instead of at full size, and gains zoom (a magnifier in the top bar for 100% and fit, Ctrl+Wheel for anything between) and crop (C, drag a box to keep). The select tool's icon is a hand rather than a marquee.
- Back and forward through the notes you have visited, so following a chain of links is not a one-way trip. Alt+Left and Alt+Right, the mouse thumb buttons, or the first two rows of a note's right-click menu.
- F11 fills the whole screen, taskbar included. Esc leaves it as well.
- Renaming a note offers to update every [[link]] that
1.2.1 11. august 2026 — 64-bit Portabel
Udgivelsesnoter
1.2.1 adds find within the open note, on Ctrl+F, and fixes the themes around it: legible text on filled accent buttons, dark card borders and a real drop shadow on the Black theme, and context menus that cast a shadow again.
Added
- Find in the open note, on Ctrl+F. A small card fades in over the note with the match count, next and previous, and wrap at either end. Drag it by the grip on its left to put it wherever it suits you and it opens there next time, staying inside the note whatever the window is doing; F3 and Shift+F3 step while it is open, Enter and Shift+Enter do the same from the box itself, and Esc closes it. Selected text seeds the box, so Ctrl+F on a word searches for it straight away. Matches are drawn over the text rather than into it, so nothing about finding touches the note, the undo stack or autosave. The sidebar box is unchanged and still searches across every note; F3 still goes there when the find bar is closed.
Fixed
- Context menus cast a drop shadow again. The shadow layer was still in place but its blur and depth had drifted to about a quarter of the size every other flyout in the app uses, so on a light background there was nothing to see and the menu sat flat on the page.
- The Black theme draws its card borders dark instead of ringing every card and dialog in a mid-gray box. Black is built so that things read by their background rather than by bright edges, and a mid-gray hairline on a near-black surface was the one edge in the app fighting that.
- Selected text is highlighted in the accent color you actually chose. Every theme carries a default accent, and the selection color was being copied from it before your choice was applied on top - so on Black the selection stayed the theme's terminal green whether you had picked orange, purple, red or blue, and the same in every other theme. It looked random; it was each theme's own default, frozen a moment too early. The Windows 98 theme keeps its period navy selection, which it states outright rather than inheriting.
- Text on a filled accent button is legible on the Black and Dark themes, which is most visible when hovering a button, since that is when the fill appears. It was white on both, and those accents are bright: on Black's neon green and teal that measures around 1.3 to 1, which is to say invisible, and on Dark four of the six accents come out under 3 to 1. Both families use near-black now, which measures between 4.5 and 15.5 on Black and between 5.3 and 8.8 on Dark. Light keeps white, which is the readable choice against its deeper accents. The palettes had in fact been corrected once already and the change did not reach the screen: the shared KillerUI layer is merged on top of them and still held white, so it overwrote the fix at startup.
- Line numbers use a monospace font, so the gutter no longer shifts sideways as you scroll between narrow and wide numbers.
KillerNotes embeds the LAME MP3 encoder (libmp3lame, LGPL-2.1) for exporting recordings. Its complete corresponding source is attached to this release as lame-3.100.tar.gz, and also lives in third_party/audio/ in the tagged source. Build instructions are in third_party/audio/README.md.
1.2.0 8. august 2026 — 64-bit Portabel
Udgivelsesnoter
1.2.0 adds dictation with offline speech recognition, code-aware notes with syntax highlighting, freely placed images and recordings, and seven new themes, alongside big-note performance fixes (#16), a markdown detection fix, interface refinements, and an installer fix.
Added
- Dictation (Ctrl+M, or the microphone on the sidebar rail): record, transcribe, then print the text at the caret or embed the recording as a playable inline chip. Everything runs locally; nothing is uploaded.
- Offline speech recognition via whisper.cpp, with three downloadable model sizes. Right-click the rail microphone to change models; without one, transcription falls back to the Windows engine.
- Recording editing: right-click an embedded recording > Edit to slice the waveform and copy, delete, or paste segments, with undo. Saving replaces the original in place.
- Recording sharing: save an embedded recording as a file (FLAC, WAV, or MP3) or copy it as a file to paste elsewhere.
- Recordings are stored as FLAC, roughly half the size, losslessly. Existing WAV recordings keep working.
- Images and recordings can be placed anywhere in a note: drag one out of the text and the paragraph wraps around it. Dropping onto a table cell places it in that cell.
- Optional per-note syntax highlighting (note right-click menu). Language is detected per paragraph, so one note can mix prose with PowerShell, HTML, XAML, XML, Vue, JSON, YAML, Markdown, SQL, C#, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, CSS, and Bash.
- Seven new themes: 98SE, Ectoplasm, Decay, Mourning, Sepulchre, Delirium and Malaise.
- The file picker shows image thumbnails, and inserting a picture opens with a preview pane.
Changed
- Line numbers count logical lines: a wrapped paragraph carries one number, and a table numbers as one line.
- The SketchPad and dictation pads are independent windows: the main window can be brought in front of them, and their rail icons light while open and close them when clicked again. The Killculator icon lights the same way.
- Warmer accents for Cyanotic, Greed, Blood and Decay: buttons, icons, selection washes, and highlights use each theme's tan accent instead of white.
- Interface brought in line with the KillerUI family standard: 24px icon rail, shared resize grabber, overflow fades, pane-anchored theme and locale flyouts, normalized menus, themed radio buttons, draggable table walls, and a font-size slider. Editor options (syntax highlighting, word wrap, spell check, preview) moved to the note right-click menu.
- Every window draws its title bar, caption close button, dialog card, and edit fields from one shared definition, themed for all thirteen themes. The separate folder picker dialog is gone; folders use the same picker as files.
- Spell check declines notes over 50,000 characters instead of hanging the app.
- The app-size readout clears after five seconds, matching KillerScan and KillerPDF.
- Internal: the codebase follows the family Shell/ / Features/ / Services/ / Models/ / Controls/ layout, oversized files were split, and the F1 shortcut list and keyboard map generate from one shared table. No behavior changes.
Fixed
- Large notes no longer freeze the app when line numbers are on; the gutter only measures the lines actually on screen (#16, thanks MrPapaya-JRR).
- Position memory now restores correctly on large notes instead of stopping about a quarter of the way in (#16, thanks MrPapaya-JRR).
- Pasting a very large script into a highlighted note no longer crashes or stalls the app; highlighting paints the visible area first and keeps up with scrolling, as do the line numbers.
- Code lines without language tells of their own (a bare }, base.OnStartup(e);) now color with the block above them; PowerShell detection covers far more cmdlets, C# detection recognizes method signatures, and Markdown highlights whole bold/italic/strikethrough spans and list markers.
- Switching themes no longer bakes the previous theme's text color into a highlighted note (white-on-white

Added
- Color-coded tags (Outlook-style): tag any note with one or more colored labels via right-click > Tags. Tags show as colored pills on the sidebar cards, and clicking a pill filters the list to that tag. Tag definitions (name + color) live per database, so they travel inside shared .kndb/.knote files; a new database starts with a basic six-color set. Manage tags (right-click > Tags > Manage tags...) adds, renames, recolors (via the full color picker), and deletes tags, with deletes and renames rippling through every note. Tag search is instant (the existing full-text index).
- Font size controls (#1): a size dropdown on the format bar shows the selection's size - hover it and scroll to change size (no clicking), or click it for the full list (10-48). Ctrl+Shift+> and Ctrl+Shift+< also grow/shrink the selection from the keyboard, and Ctrl+mouse-wheel zooms the whole editor view (50-300%, remembered across launches, Ctrl+0 resets).
- Full color picker (#1): "More..." in the text color flyout opens the family KillerPDF-style picker - saturation/value square, hue strip, RGB and hex fields, a desktop-wide eyedropper, and 9 customizable saved swatches - for both text color and highlight.
- Per-note title colors (#1): right-click a note > "Title color..." colors that note's title in the sidebar and the editor, "Reset title color" returns it to the theme. Colors travel inside shared .knote/.kndb files.
- Per-note spell check: the abc button on the format bar toggles spell checking for the open note (off by default, remembered per note, lights in the accent while on). Uses the Windows spell checking engine, so it follows your installed Windows languages.
- The notes database gains two columns for these (title_color, spellcheck), added automatically on first open; 1.0.0 databases and shared files keep working unchanged, and old .knote/.kndb files still import.
Changed
- Sidebar toggle moved from F9 to F5, so the two pane toggles sit together (F5 sidebar, F6 format bar). Tooltips, the F1 overlay, and the keyboard map follow.
- The minimized format bar strip is slimmer so it never overlaps long note titles, restores with a single click (F6 and drag-to-move unchanged), and no longer steals clicks to the title bar or jumps to the left edge on a plain click.
- Right-clicking the markdown/HTML preview no longer pops the IE engine's native context menu - the one piece of the app that could not be themed - it is suppressed instead (Ctrl+A / Ctrl+C still work).
- The app no longer creates an empty "Untitled" note at startup when the database already has notes (#2). Launch reopens the note that was open last time (remembered per database, falling back to the most recently modified), and deleting the open note lands in the most recently edited remaining note instead of spawning a replacement. A fresh empty Untitled is only created when the database has no notes at all, so the undeletable phantom "Untitled" row is gone.
Fixed
- Password protection could fail with "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process" and, worse, leave the app running without an open database, so the next autosave crashed and the session's edits were lost (#3). The rekeyed file swap now retries through transient locks (antivirus and indexer scans of the freshly written file), and if the swap still fails the original database is reopened with the old password and the error is reported in the status bar - notes keep saving.
- Only one KillerNotes instance now runs per desktop session. Two instances sharing the same notes.db was the deterministic way to hit the password-change failure above. A second launch hands its command line (a double-clicked .knote/.kndb) to the running window over a named pipe and exits, so share files still import as before; the running window is brought to the front. --demo launches are exempt, since they only ever touch the scratch demo database.
