This update is a small one that most notably fixes an annoyance many of you have reported to us: That after the 4.8.0 update, Zettlr would very often give you an annoying "Update failed" error. Nothing bad happened, and you could work perfectly fine thereafter, but it was indeed annoying. It took us a few days to find, fix, and test the issue, but we believe the error message should now be gone again.
Other than that, there are three additional notable changes in this release. First, Zettlr no longer supports macOS 12 and Ubuntu 17.04 (and below). These operating systems are no longer supported by their manufacturers, and so Zettlr follows Electron in dropping support for these. Second, this update fixes a security vulnerability, specifically the one caused by faulty eMudhra TLS certificates. Therefore, we recommend immediate update. And third, and last, we decided to drop in a small new feature: The image renderer can now not just render inline images (where the source of the image is defined alongside the image), but also refrence-style images, where the source of the image is defined somewhere else in the document. Note, however, that reference-style image captions cannot be edited in place, but must be edited in the reference itself.

Changelog
Deprecation: macOS 12 and Ubuntu 17.04 no longer supported
This release updates Electron, Zettlr's underlying application framework, to
version 44. This means that Zettlr will no longer run on macOS 12 or Ubuntu
17.04 or earlier. If you run such a system, please consider updating your
computer to continue using Zettlr.
GUI and Functionality
- Feature: Zettlr now correctly renders images that have been defined using
the reference-style variant. So instead of only rendering images in the form
, it can now also render reference style images in the form
![alt text][reference], with the reference being defined elsewhere (#663).
- Fixed an issue where a URL in an image caption would be improperly treated as
the image source (#6594).
- Fixed an issue where toggling a task mark would scroll the viewport back to
the cursor position. Now, the viewport does not scroll when a task mark is
toggled, though the cursor position is retained (#6603).
- Fixed an issue that would cause jumping of the editor content upon externally
modifying a file (#6531; #6543).
- Fixed an issue that caused excessive "failed to check for updates" errors
(#6574).
- Fixed an issue preventing files with non-lowercase extensions from showing up
and being correctly treated by Zettlr (#6613).
- Fixed a bug that would cause the statusbars of split views visible on top of
distraction-free views when using a split-view layout (#6581).
- The Table Editor now uses the wrapper element's height instead of just the
table element's. This might further improve issues with the editor jumping
around as large tables and documents with many tables are edited (#5732).
- Fixed a startup crash when a workspace contains an Electron .asar archive
(#6551).
Under the Hood
- Update Electron to v44.9.1. This drops macOS 12 and Ubuntu 17.04.
Furthermore, this includes a mitigation for the vulnerable eMudhra
certificates (see GitHub Advisory GHSA-jr5w-w6x2-84p9).
- Update Pandoc to v3.12.1. This changes how admonitions/alerts are rendered
and may require updates to your custom template CSS for HTML exports.
- Upgrade Mermaid to v12.1.0.
- Centralized update check logic.
- Fully switched the update provider from the outdated got dependency to both
pure fetch (where necessary) or ky (where convenient).
- Move the link preview generation to ky.

This update to Zettlr brings three major improvements and changes alongside a mix of various performance improvements. Most importantly, we are proud to announce that Zettlr now has support for admonitions! Then, we have received numerous updates to translations from our community so that the localized support is now much better — shoutout to the various community members who made this a reality. Check out the new contributors at the end of this changelog. Lastly, we have changed a long-standing severe logical bug in the search functionality.
Please make sure to thoroughly read this changelog before updating so that you know what's coming. We have also taken the time to write a long release note over on the Zettlr blog introducing all of these changes and explaining the admonition syntax in depths. So head over to the blog and get to know everything that's new in this version.
Happy writing!

Changelog
Admonitions
After more than six years in the making, we are proud to announce admonitions as
a new feature for Zettlr. The app now supports the more and more common syntax
that GitHub and other Markdown editors already support, using Blockquotes with a
custom header. You can create notes, tips, warnings, important blocks,
and caution blocks like so:
> [!note] This is the note's title
> This is the content of the note.
The title after the keyword is optional, and you can use both uppercase keywords
and lowercase keywords.
Zettlr comes with a built-in renderer so that you can immediately see what the
admonitions might look like upon export (note that the final styling depends on
the export option chosen and support for this type of element). The renderer can
be enabled or disabled exactly like the existing renderers.
When you "copy" a selection that contains an admonition using the "with style"
option, Zettlr will transform the admonition correctly, but whether the
admonition retains its styles depend on the application into which you paste
this code.
Note that admonition support upon exporting requires the alerts extension. You
can enable it manually in your export profile configuration, or enforce support
(where available) via the export settings.
Deprecation Note: Dropping Support for OS Versions in Next Release
This is the last Zettlr release shipping with Electron version 43. The next
release will switch to Electrion version 44, which drops support for the
following operating systems:
- Ubuntu 17.04 or earlier
- macOS 12 (Monterey)
Please make sure to update your operating system before the next version of
Zettlr ships if you are affected by this change.
GUI and Functionality
- Feature: Admonitions are here! Zettlr now supports a broad range of
admonitions (sometimes also referred to as alerts or callouts). You can use
admonitions to emphasize certain content in your documents using Blockquote
syntax with a special header (see PR. #6497 for details). This closes a long-
standing feature request (#532). Some notes:
- Admonitions come with support of five keywords: note (gray), tip
(green), warning (yellow), important (purple), and caution (red).
- Zettlr supports custom titles for admonitions (full compatibility with other
popular Markdown editors).
- The app ships with a renderer for admonitions that you can turn on and off
just like any other renderer.
- Note that, to make admonitions survive exports, you will need to enable the
alerts-extension of Pandoc in the reader of the profile in question.
- Zettlr will use similar HTML-syntax when you copy text with admonitions
using the "Copy with Styles" option, but whether this survives pasting into
other applications depends on support on their s |
| 4.7.0 | 26 de juliol del 2026 | — | 64 bits EXE (NSIS)64 bits EXE (NSIS) Notes de la versióThe next update for Zettlr comes again with a bundle of improvements and new features for you to enjoy. Again, we have spent a lot of time fixing a magnitude of issues and improving the usability of the app.
Besides these rather minor but plentiful improvements, there are two notable new features. First, we are more than happy to finally implement custom shortcuts. Those have been on our users' wishlist for years, and we are happy that we finally could make it work to add them to the customizable things you can do in the app. From now on, you can adjust many existing shortcuts to better fit your muscle memory. In addition, we have made available all text transforms via these shortcuts so that you can assign shortcuts to those that you frequently use. In addition, the interface will warn you if a shortcut you chose would possibly conflict with another command. We have designed this feature to be extensible, and right now not all commands can be customized. So if there is one you always wished you could customize, and it's not yet part of the custom shortcut settings, let us know so we can add it!
A second feature that has been in some demand is the ability to change the editor theme independent of the main theme. We are happy to announce that this is now also possible. By default, the editor theme will follow the main theme, but you can now change this to your liking.
We have also spent some time improving how you can work with the app. For example, clicking on a notification of a successful project export will now immediately open the corresponding file; erroneously opened popovers can now be closed quickly with a press on the Escape key; and we have shuffled around the project settings to make it more obvious what you can customize, and where.

GUI and Functionality
- Feature: Custom shortcuts are here. You can now customize many of the
available shortcuts and assign them to your likings. This also includes the
various text transformations that we introduced in version 3.6.0 so that you
can bind frequently used ones to a handy shortcut. The feature comes with all
the standards of custom shortcuts, including an interactive shortcut recording
that visualizes which keys will become part of the shortcuts as you type them,
a reset function to restore the default, and an automated conflict detection
that lets you know whether a shortcut you have provided might conflict with
another one.
- Feature: You can now set the editor theme to use a light or dark
appearance independent of the app appearance (#5851).
- Feature: You can now click a long-running-task notification for both
projects and single files to directly open the corresponding file.
- Feature: Popovers can now be closed with a quick press on Escape.
- Change: Changed the layout of the project properties. Now the custom
templates and CSL section are placed on the general tab, while the export
profile picker has moved to its own tab. This gives the custom options more
visibility and provides a better grouping of the options.
- Fixed a regression from 4.6.1 where the full-text search would not search any
open standalone files (#6387).
- Fixed an issue on macOS where opening a file from Finder with no open main
window would not automatically open one (#6391).
- Update translations:
- ja-JP (#6390).
- de-DE (#6449).
- tr-TR (#6450).
- Fix snippets syntax and improve nested support (#6389).
- Fixed a bug that would cause Zettlr to replace a magic quote with a regular
quote instead of deleting the text if some text was selected that happened to
be adjacent to a magic quote.
- The Table of Contents title in the sidebar is now properly reset (#6397).
- Improve toolbar styling (#6418).

| 4.6.0 | 14 de juny del 2026 | — | 64 bits EXE (NSIS)64 bits EXE (NSIS) Notes de la versióBug Fixes and Performance Improvements | Quality of Life Improvements
We are pleased to announce the next update for Zettlr. In this version, we have focused more on fixing issues and improving your ability to work on your texts efficiently rather than shiny new features – similiar to what Apple did for their upcoming 27 version of their operating systems!
Concretely, we have fixed a series of regressions and bugs that have occurred during our transition of the editor CSS away from direct styling towards the usage of CSS variables. While this has made applying Custom CSS more easy, it has also caused a few styles to break. This version fixes many of these small issues.
A bigger change involves the full-text search. We haven't really touched this since its introduction many years ago, and it showed. Rewriting the core logic, we were able to significantly improve the search performance. Searches should now be 50% to 100% faster, and deliver more relevant search results. The autocomplete suggestions for both recent searches and restricting the search to directories have been re-implemented to work around a long-standing bug in Chromium that has made the pure-HTML implementation unfortunately unusable.
Another feature this version brings affects primarily francophone Zettlr users. The default trigger character to summon the snippets autocomplete is the colon (:), but unfortunately, this has in the past interfered with how the French language assumes colons are being used. To improve the usability of the app for French speakers, it is now possible to change the trigger character to a forward slash or a percentage sign.
Finally, we have also fixed a few issues with tables. On the one hand, we have improved how you can interact with tables by improving the various commands that automate a lot of the work when working with tables. On the other hand, we have improved the accessibility of these commands with new and improved keyboard shortcuts and a generally better UX.
As always, read the full changelog below to know exactly what has changed. We wish you productive writing sessions with this new update!

Changelog
GUI and Functionality
- Feature: Allow changing the trigger character for snippet (and emoji)
autocomplete. Until now, this was hard-coded to : (which is still the
default). However, since that interferes with the way French speakers use the
colon character (Pour exemple : cette.), we now allow different trigger
characters, relieving the colon where necessary. Currently supported are /
and % as alternatives (#5185; #6325).
- Feature: The tutorial is now also available in Portuguese for new users
(#6373).
- Feature: The "Remove line breaks" transformation in the editor is now also
available via the keyboard shortcut Cmd/Ctrl-Alt-J (#5913).
- Change: This release brings many improvements to the full text search
(#6339):
- The full text search was completely rewritten to improve performance by 50%
to 100%.
- The autocompletes for both previous searches and the restrict-to-folder
functionalities have been drastically improved and work reliably (#5686).
- Ability to switch between case-insensitive and case-sensitive searches.
- Improvements in the presentation and layout of search results.
- Change: On macOS, the default setting for window vibrancy is now off. This
makes the file manager opaque, but improves visual design with the new sticky
folder headers.
- Add Elixir syntax highlighting for code blocks; identifiers: elixir, ex,
or exs (#6368).
- Fixed missing click handlers for clicking links in tables (#4694).
- Fixed an issue that would sometimes open the same link twice.
- The file manager now uses tabular digits for displaying numbers in filenames.

| 4.5.0 | 8 de maig del 2026 | — | 64 bits EXE (NSIS)64 bits EXE (NSIS) Notes de la versióTask Indicator | Custom CSS Improvements | Bug fixes and performance improvements
This update primarily brings two new features to the table: A visual task indicator for long-running tasks, and great improvements in the experience for Custom CSS users.
First, our new long-running task indicator gives you a better overview and insight into any task that you perform in Zettlr that can take long, such as exporting projects to PDF. Now, whenever you start a task that might take a while, Zettlr will show an indicator in the toolbar. It encodes several pieces of information, such as how many tasks are running, how many have failed, and how many were successful. Click the indicator to see more details for each task, including an explicit run time. Once you "clear" the tasks, the icon will disappear again until you start new tasks. If you have hardware acceleration disabled, Zettlr will only show an icon, but if you keep it enabled, you will see an animation.
Second, we have cleaned up the editor CSS. More specifically, the editor themes now make use of CSS variables to style most of their content. This can greatly reduce the complexity for those of you who want to use custom CSS. However, this also means that some custom CSS may break during this update, so make sure you adjust any CSS after updating.
Besides this, this update fixes a few additional bugs, most visibly/notably missing icons in the status bar. See the changelog below for all changes.

Changelog
GUI and Functionality
- Feature: Long-running background tasks are now visually indicated with a
toolbar icon. This allows users to check on longer-running tasks such as
project exports or the re-indexing of new workspaces and observe the progress
as it happens.
- Add HCL/Terraform fenced code block support (#6302).
- Fixed Mermaid Chart labels not showing up (#6313).
- Fixed icons in the statusbar not working.
- Update Spanish (es-ES) translations (#6320).
Under the Hood
- Updated Electron to v41.3.0.
- Update vue-virtual-scroller to v3.0.0.
- Fixed an issue where the config provider would not emit the old version
correctly (context: #6311).
- Breaking: Refactored the editor themes (#6229). Now styling the app with
Custom CSS is easier and should work more straight forward, since there are
many CSS variables that you can peruse to adjust groups of elements at once.
Note that this change might break your Custom CSS. Make sure to check
anything after setup, and adjust it according to your liking.
- Centralized DOMPurify functionality and default configuration in a new utility
function, that also allows icons using cds-icon.
- Switch from ts-node to tsx for running unit tests.
- Explicitly declare Zettlr as a CommonJS project.
- Change the Object.create(null) contraption to hold BibTeX attachments to a
regular object to simplify the structure and unit tests.

This update improves primarily on two fronts: the file manager and how you can navigate your files, and the security model of the app.
First, this update brings improvements in the file manager, making it easier for you to navigate all your files and folders. This includes a few bug fixes that improve the behavior of the file manager. For example, opening up folders of containing files now works more reliably, and the file manager once again scrolls any newly activated file into view.
Second, we have heavily increased the safety when using the app. We now disallow more potentially dangerous code from executing and have overhauled the security model of the app to better reflect how users interact with the app. As always, you can view the full changelog below.

Changelog
GUI and Functionality
- Feature: The app now remembers if the file manager was open or closed
across restarts and applies this setting on each start (#3679).
- Feature: The names of open folders in the file manager tree will now
remain sticked to the top of the file manager as you scroll through its list
of children. This is especially helpful in the "combined" file manager mode
with folders containing many files and subfolders (such as reading notes or
Zettelkasten folders).
- Add strikethrough to the Markdown AST parser (#6263).
- Fixed Markdown-to-HTML output to generate more valid HTML. This makes
comparisons with DOM-inserted HTML deterministic and should reduce the amount
of updates especially for complex widgets such as tables by a lot.
- Reduced amount of image updates in the editor. This may increase performance
especially for long documents with many images.
- Fixed containing directories not uncollapsing when a containing file was made
active.
- Upon switching between files, the file tree now consistently scrolls to the
affected file, making working with larger workspaces easier.
- The scroll-behavior for scrolling files into view has changed from instant to
smooth.
- Fixed a small bug that could throw off switching between different file
manager modes.
- Fixed the cursor scroll margin again. This means that, after years of it not
working, as you type there will now be some margin towards the top or bottom
of the editor window, preventing the cursor to "stick" to the edge of the
editor.
- Update pt-PT translations (#6282).
- Fixed an issue that would lead to unexpected navigation behavior across the
file manager (#4329).
- Fixed an issue where the file list would follow slightly different filtering
rules than the file tree due to different function implementations.
- Harmonized font usage to System fonts across the app (#5125).
- Improve Mermaid chart error reporting (#6291).
Under the Hood
- Switch from sanitize-html to DOMPurify for HTML sanitization, since the
latter has much, much less issues with various types of exotic XML-type tags
such as MathML.
- Updated Electron to v41.1.1.
- Security: Disallow any and all inline-JavaScript across all browser windows.
- Security: Enforce loading remote resources using HTTPS.
- Security: Generously spread HTML sanitization across the application. The
following changes have been made:
- Moved HTML sanitization to the edge (directly to the injection sinks).
- Removed HTML sanitization from the translation helpers. The reason is that
DOMPurify does not work out of the box in the main process, so we also
removed the sanitization from the renderer-translation helper. However, this
is safe since we do not insert the translations into HTML injection sinks.
Also, this way we can apply DOM sanitization at the edge, and no longer at

For this small update, we've fetched the polishing cloth and improved things here and there, but nothing big has happened. The one notable fix is that Zettlr now properly escapes path names passed to shell commands during exports. In very specific circumstances, it was possible to make Zettlr execute unexpected commands during exports. This update improves this behavior so that it is no longer possible.

This release brings many great new things to Zettlr. Besides the obvious batch of bug fixes, this update focuses on improved citation quality, and findability of your files in the file manager. Specifically, this update improves the file manager by allowing you to sort your workspaces and add colors to your folders. You can also close all standalone files or workspaces with a few clicks, if you so wish. In terms of citation support, Zettlr now shows a tooltip after some delay if you hover over a citation with your mouse, showing you the generated bibliography for those items to make sure you actually cite the correct work.
Besides that, you now get CSS autocompletion in the Custom CSS editor. The boot sequence of Zettlr is now much more resilient towards missing files, folders, or weird permission errors, so you should have a much better experience in volatile contexts. We also fixed a few potential security issues where unsanitized HTML was rendered in the main window that could possibly be abused by malicious actors.

Changelog
GUI and Functionality
- Feature: Added a citation tooltip. When hovering over a citation cluster
in your documents with your mouse, this will generate a small bibliography of
just the items contained in the citation cluster and display it using the
tooltip. This allows you to quickly check which item you cited exactly.
- Feature: The Custom CSS editor now offers autocomplete assistance (#6226).
- Feature: Added dedicated math code block syntax highlighting to add
MathTeX to files without rendering (#6226).
- Feature: You can now close all standalone/root files as well as all
workspaces from a new file manager context menu that opens via right-click
onto the section headers or with a click on the corresponding button. In
addition, you can collapse all folders with a simple click (#6209).
- Feature: You can now manually change the sorting of your workspaces. By
default, Zettlr automatically sorts your workspaces by name. However,
sometimes you may wish to change the ordering. To do so, use the new file
manager context menu and select "Sort workspaces…". This will open a popover
that allows you to change the workspace ordering using drag and drop. As soon
as you overwrite the sort order manually, this will disable automatic sorting
from here on. Newly opened workspaces will simply be appended at the end of
the list of open workspaces. To re-enable automatic sorting of your
workspaces, use the new setting in the file manager preferences, or click the
corresponding button in the sort popover.
- Feature: You can now assign custom accent colors to folders across your
workspaces to make them easier identifiable. This aids the existing custom
icons that you can already use to differentiate folders. You can assign one of
seven built-in colors to every directory: blue, purple, rose, red, orange,
yellow, and green. For friends of Custom CSS: These are specified as CSS
variables so that you can adjust them if you wish. The pattern is:
--accent-<color>.
- Fixed potential crashes when standalone/root files or workspaces have been
removed while Zettlr was closed (#6223). Recognizes PR #6225 by @SergioChan
who started this effort. Previously, the re-indexing process when Zettlr boots
would not check for the existence of open paths, causing crashes.
- Show citation menu when right-clicking on a non-rendered citation (#6213).
- Updated ja-JP translations (#6227; #6230; #6249).
- Updated zh-CN translations (#6243).

| 4.2.1 | 7 de març del 2026 | — | 64 bits EXE (NSIS)64 bits EXE (NSIS) Notes de la versióBug Fixes | Updated Dependencies
This update only brings minor things to the table. Most notably, this update fixes the logic of Zettlr to handle extensions to Pandoc readers and writers. Previously, extensions were always removed from readers and writers whenever you imported or exported a file. Now, if you specify an extension, this will work again. This means, previously, if you specified a writer in your defaults files disabling the “smart” extension (e.g., writer: docx-smart), Zettlr would strip the extension away. Now, these extensions are retained correctly on each import or export.
In addition, this update fixes a few oddities after the Zotero 8 update, and updates all dependencies to the newest available versions.

Fixed Pandoc Extension Parsing
If you ever used Pandoc extensions
with Zettlr, you may have wondered why they sometimes appeared not to work.
After a report by a user, we have found out that Zettlr never actually parsed
these correctly. We decided to make this a bit more visible in the changelog
since your exports may have been broken without you realizing. This way you can
verify any of your exports.
GUI and Functionality
- Fix indenting and tab insertion behavior (#6196).
- Fix Zettlr not correctly parsing Pandoc extensions (#6212).
- Improved error handling when opening PDF attachments.
- Make Zettlr more resilient when CSL JSON library files are malformed.
Under the Hood
- Add unit tests for parseReaderWriter utility function.
- Upgrade Electron to v40.8.0.
- Upgrade Pandoc to v3.9.0.
- Upgrade ESLint to v10.0.3.
- Properly parse and check the returned results from the BetterBibTex JSON RPC
API when querying PDF attachments.
- Zettlr no longer assumes CSL JSON files are well-formed. Instead, each item is
checked for the presence of required keys, and is skipped if there is an
issue. This ensures library files can also be loaded partially.

This update brings three distinct sets of improvements. First, it contains a series of new features for the preview mode, which make blockquotes now render with a vertical bar instead of italicized font. In addition, Pandoc divs and spans are now pre-rendered and apply any custom styling you have applied, if applicable.
Second, it contains a bunch of minor bug fixes and improvements of some annoying behavior so that the app works better for everyone. This also includes some big improvements of the Brazilian, Japanese, and German translations.
Last but not least, this update includes a fix for a bug that had been introduced by the recent Zotero 8 update. Some users were reporting that, after that update, Zettlr would stop suggesting citations, and that other parts of the citation pipeline would randomly fail. This update provides a fix to ensure that your citations should mostly work, even if the output from Zotero contains some minor problems.

- Added a new setting to switch between native highlights (==mark==) and
using spans for this ([mark]{.highlight}).
- Added a new toolbar button to insert divs and spans.
- Added new buttons to the formatting toolbar to insert underlined,
strikethrough, and highlighted spans.
- Feature: Blockquotes are now rendered with a vertical bar (#6122).
- Feature: Users can now opt to display hidden files and folders
("dot-files") in the sidebar and/or filemanager in the settings (#6041).
- Feature: Custom Pandoc divs are now pre-rendered depending on the
corresponding setting (#6121). This allows you to preview any custom styling
you have applied to them within the editor.
- Feature: You can now move document tabs to the start or end of the
tablist from the context menu (#6130).
- Added an error message that explains to users that an import profile is needed
if they attempt to import a supported file with no profile.
- Updated pt-BR translation (#6154).
- Updated ja-JP translation (#6198).
- Updated de-DE translation.
- Improved the tag recognition to allow for more varied Unicode characters in
tags than previously, including umlauts, accents, or emojis (#6155).
- Improved pilcrow styling when whitespace rendering is on (#6152).
- Fixed the frontmatter linter never reporting any errors with the YAML (#6167).
- Fixed an issue where images that spanned multiple lines could cause the editor
to crash when image rendering was active.
- Fixed the tab key not respecting the "Indent using tabs instead of spaces"
setting. Additionally, pressing tab now always inserts spaces in YAML
frontmatter blocks to maintain valid YAML syntax (#6168).
- Fix: The formatting toolbar no longer grabs focus from the editor.
- Fix: Added a configuration setting to allow restoring the pre-4.0 behavior of
not showing the underlying Markdown syntax of pre-rendered elements when the
cursor merely touches the element. If the setting "Show Markdown syntax when
the cursor is adjacent or inside an element" is enabled (the default), the
editor will show the Markdown syntax both when the cursor is within the
element or if it is adjacent to it.
- Fixed the table editor "Delete table" context menu item not working as
intended (#6088).
- Updated MathJax URL in various HTML-based templates to v4 (#6148). Note that
Zettlr will not overwrite existing templates, so to benefit from this, you
will have to factory-reset the affected templates.
- Fixed a bug starting with the Zotero 8 update in Zettlr would no longer
provide autocomplete for some users. The reason is that some of the items in
the exported CSL JSON files would lack |

GUI and Functionality
- Fix a bug where the preferences window would allow arbitrary tab sizes. Now,
tab sizes are bound between 2 and 10 (see #6131).
- Fixed links not registering clicks when they are pre-rendered within table
cells of the TableEditor (#4557).
- Fix application of custom tag classes.
- Fixed a bug that would not correctly apply the code class to segments of
code in some circumstances (primarily when adding YAML front matters or
comments).
- Fix syntax highlighting in code blocks, frontmatters, etc. Now, Zettlr assigns
more default-colors of the solarized code syntax theme. In addition, regular
text is now more readable, especially in light mode.
- Fixes and improvements to the toolbar styling; simplify CSS rules.
- Made toolbar icons slightly larger.
- Update ja-JP translation (#6132).
- Fixed a bug that would not accept custom height constraints via Pandoc
attributes for images if the maximum image height was set to 100% in the
settings.
- Fixed "Learn more" link on the citation page in the onboarding window (#6138).
- Fixed an issue that would make the file search crash on Windows, if a
workspace was located at a volume root (#6142).
- Fixed an issue that would cause Mermaid graphs to still be pre-rendered in
"raw" mode (#6141).
- Fixed a bug that would cause code files (JSON/YAML/TeX) to be formatted
weirdly if Zettlr opens with one of these files on startup, due to relevant
CSS never being loaded in this case.
- Improved PDF viewer interaction (#6153).
Under the Hood
- Update dependencies:
- Electron: v40.0
- Forge: 7.11.1
- Builder: 26.5.0
- The FSAL Cache now consistently utilizes asynchronous filesystem operations
(#5994).
- Refactor Zettelkasten link and tag parsing (#5997).
- Number controls in forms now allow for providing min and max values.
- Increased strictness of the @typescript-eslint/no-explicit-any rule from
"off" (no checking) to "warn" to slowly start migrating away from any
remaining any uses in the wild.
- FSAL Improvements:
- Removed a lot of dead code in the FSAL.
- Moved the save functionality away from the FSAL*-submodules, and divided
the responsibility between the DocumentsProvider and the FSAL module.

| 4.1.0 | 13 de gener del 2026 | — | 64 bits EXE (NSIS)64 bits EXE (NSIS) Notes de la versióBug Fixes | Performance Improvements
This is the first minor update for Zettlr 4.0. It comes with many fixes and small improvements, but also two new features and a change that you should know about. The two features are that you can now additionally collapse YAML frontmatters and Pandoc divs with the collapse-arrows left of the editor area, and Zettlr furthermore remembers which sections you have collapsed on a per-editor basis.
The change pertains to a configuration update that will make downgrading from this version difficult, and which requires your attention. Read everything in the Changelog below.
Changelog
Read Before Updating
In this version, we perform a long-planned configuration change that affects
your loaded workspaces and files. Before installing this update, please take
note of which workspaces and files you have open, in case they are being closed
through this update. (No data will be actually deleted, but this helps you avoid
having to search for the folders.)
In addition, it is crucial to remember that once you update to this version,
there is no turning back. If you decide to downgrade to a previous version,
your files and workspaces will be closed, and you will have to re-open them
afterwards.
GUI and Functionality
- Feature: You can now collapse YAML frontmatters and Pandoc divs (#6115).
- Feature: Zettlr now remembers folded regions as long as the window remains
open, even when you close a document (#6115).
- Change: Due to a configuration change, downgrading Zettlr (which we
generally discourage) after updating to this version will lead to your
workspaces being closed.
- Fixed XCode Command Line Tools setup dialog on macOS (#5428).
- Fixed an issue that prevented opening Markdown files with tables that include
Pandoc attribute strings when the TableEditor was enabled (#6110).
- Fixed footnote tooltip rendering (#6107).
- Fixed an issue preventing Zettlr from starting if the stats file contained
errors (#6127).
- Improved link target extraction logic when following links (#6098).
- Performance improvements when following links (#6072).
- Hide reference link labels when previewing Markdown links (#6097).
- Improved performance on generating the preview-bibliography in the sidebar by
collecting citation keys from the document only in the main process (#6068).
- Improved math parsing to fix certain cases (#6030).
- Relaxed filename restrictions for loading custom dictionaries (#6126).
- Improved Pandoc div parsing (#6120).
- Update de-DE translation (#6081).
- Update ja-JP translation (#6086).
Under the Hood
- Moved the openPaths property. The openPaths property was a simple array
holding all currently loaded root files and workspaces intermingled. This
setting stems from the time when Zettlr could not load arbitrary files, and
mixing files and folders is generally a bad practice. This property has now
been moved into the new namespace app in the settings, and divided into
openFiles and openWorkspaces. This will make a few future checks and
features easier to implement, as the separation into files and folders is made
explicit and not left to the OS. This will allow us to better clean up the
property (personal note: I've seen a colleague's config file which was full of
non-existing file paths, and I didn't like that). In rare situations, this
change may close all your workspaces, in which case you would have to re-open
them.
- New utility function disambiguateFile that can be used to retrieve a
time-based non-existing path that can be used for backup purposes.
- Added a new environment variable, ZETTLR_DISABLE_UPDATE_CHECK. If that
variable is detected during build, this will hard-disable update checks in the
application. This can be used by package maintainers to ensure update checks
from within the app are disabled, and Zettlr instead must be updated via the
package manager. Please note that the build script will only check for the
presence of the variable, not its contents. To ensure you are building with |

| 3.6.0 | 31 de juliol del 2025 | — | 64 bits EXE (NSIS)64 bits EXE (NSIS) Notes de la versióa11y/Dark Mode fixes | Text Transformations | Bug Fixes and Performance Improvements
We are happy to present a new update to Zettlr that includes a few nifty new features! Most notably, this update introduces a series of text transformations that you can use to modify any text inside Zettlr. These transformations allow you to, e.g., capitalize text to sentence or title case, fix errors that often happen when copying from PDF files, or change the text to conform to certain typographical styles. More transformations are to come in the future, but we believe that this is a great start to improve your workflow.
A second section in which we were active for this release concerns the theme. First, we have fixed an annoying bug that would never remember your dark mode setting on platforms other than macOS. And second, we have fixed an accessibility issue that would make Zettlr flicker white whenever opening a new window while using dark mode.
Finally, this update includes some additional bug fixes and performance improvements, and updates to the framework. For all information, as always, please refer to the complete changelog below.

Changelog
Text Transformations
Zettlr now features a set of several text transformation commands in the editor.
Using these commands, you can transform various pieces of text in the editor
using several strategies aimed at working with both regular text (which you can,
e.g., transform between sentence or title case) and corrupted text (from which
you can remove control characters, unnecessary line breaks, and clean up
quotation marks). In total, Zettlr now ships with 13 such transform commands,
but many more are possible.
To utilize these transformations, simply select the text you wish to transform,
open the context menu on it, and select the corresponding transformation from
the context menu.
The available transforms as of now are:
- Zap gremlins: Removes unwanted control characters (such as form feeds,
vertical tabs, and others), which sometimes end up in recognized PDF text.
- Strip duplicate spaces: Removes any superfluous spaces.
- Italics to quotes: Turns italic markers (e.g., *text*) into quotes
("text").
- Quotes to italics: Turns quotation marks (e.g., "text") into italic
markers (*text*).
- Remove line breaks: Removes superfluous linebreaks while retaining any
paragraphs (separated by two consecutive linebreaks).
- Straighten quotes: Turns smart, or "magic quotes" into regular quotes.
- Ensure double quotes: Turns any type of quotation (which includes backticks,
since those sometimes appear in text copied from PDF files!) into regular
double quotes.
- Double quotes to single: Turns any straight double quotes to single quotes.
- Single quotes to double: Turns single quotes into double quotes.
- Emdash — Add spaces around: Ensures that all em-dashes (—) in the text are
surrounded by spaces.
- Emdash — Remove spaces around: Ensures that no em-dashes (—) in the text
are surrounded by spaces.
- To sentence case: Turns the selected text to sentence case.
- To title case: Turns The Selected Text To Title Case.
GUI and Functionality
- Feature: Zettlr now has text transformations. With these, you can change
selected pieces of text using a quick access command menu (#5701). Special
thanks to @richdouglasevans for implementing this.
- Change: Zettlr will no longer parse Markdown-like files that exceed ca.
10 MB in size. After some testing, we have determined that 10 MB seems to be
a balanced trade-off between parsing as many files as possible and preventing
the app to crash (especially on slower computers). Note that this only affects
the caching of certain pieces of metadata, such as title, heading level 1, and
ID. You will still be able to open and edit the file. For more |

Over the past weeks, we have managed to include a few improvements left and right, which mostly involve bug fixes and minor tweaks. More notably, we have performed some work on the keyboard shortcut situation. First, we have unified and harmonized the keyboard shortcuts available to you by using the same keymap across all editors that you can see across the app (including in the assets manager), which hopefully reduces friction for those who frequently adapt profiles or snippets. We have also added a few new keyboard shortcuts and fixed a few conflicts. Other than that, we are happy to report that, thanks to community efforts, the French and Czech translations have been updated.

Changelog
GUI and Functionality
- Feature: The code editors (in the assets manager and elsewhere) now share
the same keymap as the main editor.
- Feature: The image renderer now acknowledges and respects the presence of
a Pandoc link attributes string behind an image to scale images using custom
sizes (#1328).
- Change: Removed some optional properties from the default profiles. If you
want to switch to the new defaults, delete those files from the assets manager
or rename your existing ones. Specifically, removed top-level-division,
whose meaning has changed which started to produce empty first pages during
Word exports (#5645).
- Fixed a long-standing bug that would not clear the modification marker on both
file tabs (#5747) and the macOS window indicator (#4724) when a modified file
was closed without saving changes. Acknowledges PR #5747 which is superseded
by this change.
- Added a keyboard shortcut for highlighting text: Ctrl-Shift-H (#4668).
- The Mermaid diagram renderer is now more flexible. It now renders any Mermaid
diagram in any type of valid fenced code block with both allowed variations of
providing the info string: the plain mermaid and the Pandoc-attribute style
{.mermaid} class (#5734).
- Fixed a keymap conflict that would cause Enter to not accept autocomplete
suggestions in some contexts such as Markdown syntax elements (#5646).
- Improved the math, mermaid, image, and heading renderers so that they perform
additional checks before actually updating their respective rendered elements.
This should reduce the amount of flickering and unintentional scrolling
especially in longer documents with many of such elements.
- Enable the CodeMirror folding keymap which lets you fold and unfold code, such
as headings, with keyboard shortcuts instead of using the arrows to the left
of the editor (#857). The shortcuts are: Ctrl-Shift-[ (Windows/Linux) or
Cmd-Alt-[ (macOS) for folding code, Ctrl-Shift-] or Cmd-Alt-] for
unfolding, Ctrl-Alt-[ for folding all, and Ctrl-Alt-] for unfolding all.
- Update fr-FR translation (#5738).
- Update cs-CZ translation (#5775).
Under the Hood
- Cache ESLint results to improve subsequent linter run speed (#5706).
- Spawn shell when starting test GUI on Windows (#5685).
- Markdown commands now check whether the provided target EditorView is parsed
using a Markdown parser before running.
- Move all keymaps into a single defaultKeymap.
- Assume ** as default bold and * as default italic formatting for Markdown
commands if the config field is not present.
- Added a pandocLinkParser for properly parsing pandoc link attribute strings.

GUI and Functionality
- Breaking Change: To better support the now recommended Wikilink syntax
with titles ([[filename|Some title]]), links that use the old and not
recommended syntax of adding titles from the time when Zettlr did not support
titles ([Do not use this syntax]([[filename]])) can no longer be
automatically replaced when renaming files (#5606).
- Zettelkasten links with titles will now get properly replaced when renaming
files (#5606).
- Fixed an issue that prevented the FSAL cache clearing from proceeding
appropriately.
- Fix an issue that could lead to accidental overwriting of existing files in
some cases (#4940; also previously #5460 in Zettlr 3.3.0).
- Fixed malformed rendering of plain links into HTML links (#5587).
- Fixed a bad interaction between the default keymap and inserting an Å
character on macOS keyboards.
- Fixed a bad interaction between the default keymap and inserting backticks on
macOS keyboard layouts without deadkeys (#5517).
- Fixed file exports not working after renaming file (#5574).
- Links won't be pre-rendered if their title is empty, as this would hide the
entire link syntax.
Under the Hood
- Bump Pandoc to v3.6.3.
- Bump chokidar to v4.0.3.
- Bump Electron to v34.2.0.
- Fixed the boot order of providers to ensure certain actions are taken before
providers access each others (primary case: the FSAL needs to be booted asap).
- Promisify the cache clearing procedure.
- Switched Apple Code Signing Certificate from expiring to new one.
- Improve the linting experience by also including a TypeScript lint on top of
vue-tsc; in addition to stylistic and code-issues that are handled by ESLint
this will capture serious TypeScript issues as what happened during the patch
from 3.3.1 to 3.4.0 (see for context #5526); the new linting experience will
run by default, the old linter has been renamed from lint to lint:code,
and the new linter can be called individually using lint:types.
- Rename value to target in Markdown AST ZettelkastenLink nodes to make it
more explicit that this field contains the value and never the title.
- Add new property targetRange to Markdown AST ZettelkastenLink nodes to
allow for easy manipulation of link targets.

Update 3.4.1 fixes an issue with release 3.4.0 from yesterday.
Hello! With this final update of the year, we say goodbye to 2024 and wish you happy holidays and a successful start into 2025. This update focuses on fixing issues and improving the performance across the app. Most notably, we have continued to correct the issues that have been caused by 3.3.0 especially on Windows and a few less noticeable things. One addition is that we have improved the word counting mechanism. It conveniently shows the project word count in a file's statusbar for project files, and counts words in the bibliography sidebar.

Changelog
GUI and Functionality
- New Feature: For files that belong to a Zettlr project, the status bar now additionally displays the total word or character count for all files across the entire project, making it easy to check for a total limit (e.g., for a journal submission); clicking on the item furthermore allows quick switching between just those files that are part of the project
- New Feature: The references sidebar tab now provides an approximate word count, which is useful if some word count limit includes the bibliography; as references aren't included in any other word count
- Fix SVG image preview (#5496)
- Fix network share image preview (#5495)
- Fixed a bug where opened documents would not be closed once the last tab was closed, retaining outdated file contents and making the file unresponsive to external changes. Now files that do not have an open editor instance will be closed appropriately
- Fixed an issue where valid citations from within, e.g., comments, or other non-valid places would end up in the list of references
- Fixed a bug that would cause spellcheck suggestions to appear offset (#5494)
- Checking task-list checkboxes now returns the focus back to the editor immediately (#5246)
- The statusbar's character/word counters now respect the character count setting, meaning only the word or character count is shown, not both
- Update translations:
- uk-UA (#5524)
- de-DE
Under the Hood
- Update Pandoc to version 3.6
- Bump CodeMirror dependencies
- Updates to the Markdown AST parser:
- Headings now have regular children
- Fixed a bug that would prevent text nodes from tables to be extracted
- Better detection of content "gaps"
- Type system updates:
- Define a new shared type, IPCAPI that can be used to type the various IPC APIs the service providers use across the app.
- Fully type IPC APIs: AssetsProvider, DocumentAuthority, DocumentManager, WindowProvider, CiteprocProvider
- Refactored the file type detection system; it is now simpler and easier to use and can detect a variety of additional groups of files (previously only Markdown and code files; now also images, PDFs, MS and Open Office files as well as data files)
- Select controls can be disabled now
- Configuration updates in the renderer are now throttled to at most once every second, preventing some fast updates from inducing lag
- Refactored spellcheck linter

Some days are just bad days, and today was one such for us: In version 3.3.0, we accidentally broke all images, links, and file previews for Windows users. This patch fixes this. Sorry for the inconvenience! Have a great day, now with an actually working update to your favorite writing app!

| 3.2.3 | 28 d’octubre del 2024 | — | 64 bits EXE (NSIS)64 bits EXE (NSIS) Notes de la versióVisual fixes | Better updates | Crash fixes
This update fixes issues across several areas of the app. Primarily, we have improved the rendering of elements in the editor, the usability of drag & drop and paste operations, the updater, and a few rare but severe bugs. More specifically, the image renderer is now more usable, and works and looks better. Also, we have improved some rendering issues with regard to blockquotes and highlights. Thirdly, the updater now provides both better feedback and checks once an hour, meaning that the app will notify you of new updates even if you rarely restart it. Also, it will notify you of an available update with a message box, rather than just the update icon in the toolbar. Lastly, users have reported and we have found a few issues that could freeze up individual editors, or the entire app, leading to a suboptimal experience. As always, for all changes, please consult the changelog below.

Changes to Pandoc Profiles
This update fixes a workaround that Zettlr had in place for a shortcoming of Pandoc regarding the automatic numbering of headings. This workaround is no longer necessary, since Pandoc has since fixed the issue.
Zettlr now ships with changed default profiles for various export formats. Since Zettlr never overwrites any data, the new defaults will not be applied automatically. You can apply the change manually by removing the following line from the default profiles: shift-heading-level-by: 1.
GUI and Functionality

- Fixed the "Paste as Plain" menu item not working (#5052)
- Dark mode folded header's ellipsis are now properly colored (#5284)

- Fixed an issue preventing pasting of images into the editor (#5386)
- Fixed the maximum height of the image preview in the paste-image dialog to 50% in order to prevent it from pushing the controls out of view

Many users have complained that automatically creating files was no longer possible in version 3.2 due to a change we made. Our hopes were to clean up the code, but we didn't anticipate this. Sorry for the inconvenience that this change has caused. It should now work as expected again.
In addition, we've finally added a change that has been requested for quite some time: The app now remembers the widths of the sidebars across restarts, so you don't have to resize them manually anymore. To reset the widths to their default size, simply double-click the divider between them and the editor.
Changelog
GUI and Functionality
- Zettlr now remembers the widths of file manager and sidebar
- You can now reset the file manager and sidebar widths by double-clicking the corresponding resizer
- Copying plain links in the form <http://www.example.com> will now remove the angled brackets (#5285)
- Reverted a change from 3.1.0 which altered the process of creating new files in such a way that the "open directory" was no longer considered; now Zettlr will again use the open directory if present, allowing users to quickly create new files by selecting a folder first in the file manager (#5141)
- Updated translations:
- it-IT (#5233)
- zh-TW (#5327)
- nl-NL (#5319)
- ru-RU (#5314)
Under the Hood

In this release, we've fixed a few serious bugs, so we recommend updating for everyone, especially users who regularly work with files created on Windows. In addition, this release features a few good updates that will improve your workflows. As always, please report any bugs that we didn't find this time around. Have fun with the update!
Changelog
Resolved Data Loss Issues
When Zettlr v3.0.0 was released, we started receiving reports by users mentioning that some files wouldn't properly save, potentially leading to data loss. After searching for the underlying root cause, we have now identified it as improper newline handling in files. Specifically, we have accidentally introduced a bug that would render Zettlr incapable of properly detecting Windows-style CRLF newlines. This means that Zettlr was only sometimes able to properly read and modify such files.
This update fixes this bug. Now, Zettlr is able to properly read and modify any file, regardless of whether it has been created on Windows, macOS, Linux, or even some older systems. We would like to apologize for this bug and thank you for sticking with Zettlr despite it.
Changes to the file filtering logic
The filter field in the file manager has always applied OR-logic when searching for files and workspaces. In this latest update, Zettlr changes to AND file filtering logic, meaning that only items matching all queries will be displayed when entering phrases separated by spaces.
As an example: Until now, searching for "Niklas Luhmann" would've surfaced files that contained either "Niklas" or "Luhmann," or both. From now on, searching for "Niklas Luhmann" will only show files that contain both "Niklas" and "Luhmann" and exclude files that miss one of these phrases.
GUI and Functionality
- Feature: The attachment/assets/other file sidebar tab now also shows files found in the default image folder where applicable
- Feature: The right-click context menu for external markdown links now contains an option to remove a link. When removing <link> style links, the link text remains as plain text. When removing [title](link) style links, the title text remains as plain text.
- Change: When searching for files in the filter field, only files and workspaces that match all queries entered will be displayed
- Fixed the French translation of unsaved-changes dialog actions. (#5177)
- Fixed bugs with properly saving files (and retaining linefeeds) on Windows systems; now Zettlr should be capable of handling any type of linefeed (#5109)
- Fixed an issue where checkboxes in various list controls would not be properly updated to reflect the actual, underlying value
- Fix assets file icons in the sidebar
- Design fixes in the sidebar
- Fix: The file preview tooltip now respects the filename display settings
- Fix: Focus input field when search in folder (global search) is triggered
Under the Hood
- Upgrade Electron to v30.1.0 (cf. issue #5135 and Electron issue #41839)
- Downgrade Linux builds to use Ubuntu 20.04 instead of 22.04 (#5137)
- Fully abstract away newline handling from the internal logic. Now, newlines are always \n across the entire app. The actual newlines from the files will be stored in their respective file descriptor, and will be exclusively used on file reads (to replace them with \n) and file writes (to replace \n with)

| 3.1.1 | 5 de maig del 2024 | — | 64 bits EXE (NSIS)64 bits EXE (NSIS) Notes de la versióHotfix for crashes on Linux
Sometimes, waiting to update something is a smart idea. This time, we were not that smart and bumped the underlying Electron framework to version 30, which unfortunately made running Zettlr 3.1.0 on most Linux systems impossible. With this patch, we rolled back Electron to a working version. Apologies to all Linux users, we still love you!

We therefore recommend all users install this update as soon as possible. If you run macOS below version 10.15, which is no longer supported in Zettlr 3.0.5, please upgrade to Zettlr 3.0.4 by downloading this from GitHub Releases, which includes the security patch but still works on macOS 10.13 and 10.14 until you are able to update your macOS to 10.15 or higher.
Immediately after v3.0.4, we decided to release a minor upgrade that bumps
the underlying Electron framework to the most recent version. This will stop
segmentation faults in Wayland environments and prevent the flagging of
Zettlr in repositories such as AUR due to outdated dependencies.Dropping Support for macOS 10.13 and 10.14
Due to Zettlr's underlying Electron framework dropping support for macOS 10.13
(High Sierra) and 10.14 (Mojave), Zettlr drops support for these operating
systems as well. To continue to use Zettlr on a Mac, ensure to update to at
least macOS 10.15 (Catalina).Linux ARM builds functionally again
Since Zettlr v3.0.0, Linux users on ARM-machines had the issue that they could
not run the app, as a dependency has been compiled for the wrong architecture.
Thanks to efforts by @LaPingvino, this has now been finally fixed and you should
be able to run the app again just fine on ARM computers with Linux.Changelog

• Resizing an image upon pasting from clipboard now works better, since the aspect ratio will only be recalculated once you leave the input field (i.e. by tabbing into another input); this way you can just type in a specific number
• Disabling "render task lists" will now also disable the application of task lists; this helps speed up editing long documents with many tasks
• The main editor search now no longer automatically searches
• When opening the main editor search, anything in the search input will now be selected
• Fix unintended global search start
• Highlight results from global search in the main editor text
• The code editor in the assets manager now scales with the size of the window
• Added an option to prevent Zettlr from checking for updated translations
Under the Hood
• Switched to the new code signing certificate for the windows installers
• Write errors which are logged properly to disk
• Display errors in the log viewer
• Added the default Homebrew installation directory for Apple Silicon Macs in order for Zettlr to find Pandoc installed via brew.
• Improve global search typings |
