# VoxDMR 0.15.3 🎉

Covers work from 2026-09-06 to 2026-09-08.

**Platforms:** Android (arm64-v8a, armeabi-v7a/32-bit, x86_64) · Linux x86_64 · Windows x86_64

> 📱 **Which Android APK?** Most people want **arm64-v8a** from the Play Store. The **32-bit (armeabi-v7a)** APKs are built specifically for PoC radios and older Android phones:**install those manually, not from the Play Store.**

---

Two Android fixes, and a desktop build that finally reports its own version.

> 💻 **If you are on the 0.15.2 desktop build, this release is the one that stops it nagging you.** Install it once and the loop ends.

## 🐛 Fixes

• **The updater stops offering an update you have already installed** `[Desktop]` - the 0.15.2 desktop binaries were built from a version file that still read 0.15.1, so the app kept finding itself out of date, installing the same build, and asking again on the next launch. Installing 0.15.3 ends it; nothing else about the desktop app changed. A check now fails the tag if the version files and the tag disagree.
• **Transmit audio is back to its old level on radios that went quiet** `[Android]` - since 0.15.0, VoxDMR switched the radio's own noise suppression, gain control and echo canceller off for the neural noise reduction, which ships off. On some radios the vendor's gain control *is* the microphone amplifier — around 12 dB on an Inrico T320. The capture chain now follows that switch:with noise reduction off, radios get the microphone they had in 0.14. Applies from your next key-up.
• **A profile restored from a backup can be deleted again** `[Android]` - Delete was hidden for the active profile, which is exactly what the first profile out of a backup becomes. It is now always offered; removing the active profile names the one taking over and drops a running session first.
• **A restored backup keeps your scan list** `[Android]` - favourites came back with every scan flag cleared. The flags now travel with the profile, trimmed to its favourites.

A fix release, mostly about transmit audio on radios that went quiet after 0.15.0.

## 🐛 Fixes

• **Transmit audio works again on radios that mis-report their microphone** `[Android]` - from 0.15.0, VoxDMR asked Android for the least-processed microphone it could get. Some radios say they have one, accept the request, and then hand back a microphone that is never wired to anything:the over keys up, the network sees your ID, the mic indicator lights, and the level meter never moves, because not one sample ever arrives. Nothing caught it — the request succeeded and the connection was never dropped. VoxDMR now listens to what the microphone actually delivers: if the first fraction of a second of an over is digitally silent — not quiet, but literally nothing, which no working microphone produces — it moves down to the next microphone source mid-over and says so in the activity log. There are three to work through, ending at the one Android uses for phone calls. A radio caught doing this is remembered, so every later launch starts on the microphone that works from the very first over. The memory is per-radio, is left out of a settings backup, and is cleared automatically when the radio's system software is updated — that update may be the thing that fixed it. Reported on the Sonim XP8800, Hytera P60 and PNC-370SE, and confirmed fixed on a Sonim XP8.
• **The app no longer opens onto a blank screen** `[Android]` - on a Hytera PoC radio, an app you had left and re-opened from the launcher icon could come back as nothing but a dark screen, one that not even the back key would leave, while the same app opened from the PoC softkey ran perfectly. The softkey was quietly starting a second copy of the app inside the launcher's own task, and that second copy took the running app's engine away from the first. There is only one copy of the app now, whichever way you open it.
• **Starting on boot is now a switch of its own, and can be turned off** `[Android]` - Settings → Connection → Running in the background ends with **Start on boot**, separate from the three background modes. Opening the app when the radio powers on used to come welded to **Always on**:choosing it also meant the app appearing on screen at every boot and after every app update, with nothing in the settings admitting that or offering a way out short of giving up the background session. Radios already set to Always on keep starting on boot — the switch arrives already on for them. The boot decision is written to the activity log either way, including when it declines to start, so a radio that opens on its own can finally say who asked it to.

A small follow-up to 0.15.0, about how the app shuts down and how it comes back.

🐛 Fixes
- Quit really quits, and opening the app reconnects [Android] - quitting from the app bar (or from the drawer on a small-panel radio) ended the session and closed the window, but left VoxDMR itself running in the background. Quit now shuts the app down for real, which makes opening it a fresh start: with Connect when the app opens switched on, it connects and rejoins your last talkgroup in about a second.
- Coming back to the app no longer fights a reconnect already in progress [Android] - returning to VoxDMR while it was retrying a dropped connection could start a second attempt over the top of the first. It now waits for the one already under way. A password the server has rejected is no longer retried every time you open the app either — repeatedly presenting a bad password to a master is how a DMR ID gets blocked, so it waits for you to correct it.

## ✨ Headline features

• **VOX — transmit by speaking** `[All]` - arm it and your voice keys the radio; the talk button always overrides it, and a time-out timer is always enforced. Deliberately out of the way:on Android, *Settings → Push-to-talk → Advanced: VOX* opens to a five-second press and hold the first time (a held D-pad OK works on radios with no touchscreen); on desktop, five clicks on the same header. A first-use notice explains what a self-keying transmitter means before it can be switched on. ⚠️ **Do not use VOX to bridge another radio or a repeater onto BrandMeister** — unattended bridging is against their terms and is grounds for having your DMR ID banned.
• **Neural noise reduction on transmit** `[All]` - a small neural network cleans your microphone before the DMR codec sees it, with a strength slider. The codec sends a *model* of your voice rather than the sound itself, so background noise corrupts it into the burbly artefacts people blame on DMR — cleaning the input helps far more than cleaning the output would. Roughly +3 to +4 dB in car, hum, babble and hiss. **Off by default, and worth leaving off somewhere quiet**:with no noise to remove it measurably degrades clean speech.
• **Light theme** `[All]` - Dark, Light, or follow the system, on both platforms. Dark stays the default and looks exactly as it did; the choice survives a restart and travels in a settings backup.
• **First-run setup wizard** `[All]` - a guided first launch on both platforms — network, account, microphone check, vocoder — instead of an empty settings screen. Talkgroup names are now per-network, so a FreeDMR talkgroup no longer shows a BrandMeister name.
• **Bips for received calls, and separate PTT tones** `[All]` - a short high bip when someone starts transmitting on your talkgroup and a low one when they stop, so you can hear the channel go busy without watching the screen. The single "PTT tones" setting is now two — start and stop — so you can keep just the roger beep.
• **Car mode looks like a radio** `[Android]` - on small-panel PoC radios such as the Hytera P50, car mode now draws an instrument face:a legend rail, a state plate, a segmented level meter with peak hold, a time-out bar while you transmit, and hard-edged channel keys. Phones and tablets are unchanged.

## ✨ New features

• **Home-screen call card** `[Android]` - on Hytera PoC radios running the Onego launcher, the home screen shows the talkgroup, who is talking and a running call timer, and VoxDMR appears in the launcher's card picker.
• **Status LED** `[Android]` - the radio's notification LED follows the session:green for an incoming call, red while you transmit, a slow orange blink while scan is armed, plus optional connection-drop and connected indications. Five independent switches under Display & power.
• **Cleaner microphone capture** `[Android]` - VoxDMR now asks Android for the least-processed microphone it can get and switches the vendor noise suppressor, AGC and echo canceller off on the capture session. Previously those ran on top of VoxDMR's own levelling on many handsets.
• **Targets Android 16 (API 36)** `[Android]`

## 🔧 Changes

• **Transmit filters now default off** `[All]` - the ~300 Hz low cut and ~3.4 kHz high cut ahead of the DMR codec used to ship on. Both now start off, so your microphone reaches the codec with its full tone and the band-limiting is there when you want it. Still in Settings on both platforms. ⚠️ **On Android, an install where you never opened those toggles will move to off, changing your transmitted audio** — turn "Cut low rumble" bac
