Features
- ⚠️ [BREAKING CHANGE] Added local instance resources clean-up on deletion. #370
Local instance’s Docker resources will now be deleted as part of the instance removal. That includes ALL of the instance’s containers, networks, and volumes. The action cannot be undone. Back up your data before deletion.
If you were removing instances through the Penpot Desktop’s UI and then deleting resources with e.g. Docker Desktop, there is no need to do that anymore.

Instance removal flow now features a confirmation dialog. In case of a remote instance, it’s an extra click. For a local instance, where all the content is at stake, you will be required to type in the instance’s name as a deletion confirmation.
Fixes
- Fixed dev tools to open for the application’s window. #352
Dev tools toggle, cmd/ctrl + shift + i, now correctly opens dev tools of the application, not the currently focused tab.
- Fixed abandoned partitions to be cleaned up. #363
The app will now check for abandoned partitions (e.g. for instances removed manually from the configuration file(s)) and move them to the bin/trash. The check happens automatically on launch.
- Fixed derived instance content to be saved. #363
Instance’s defaults and normalisation were applied after a config read, but not saved until e.g. after an instance setting edit. It included instance id, which could be generated on every launch and change an instance to a new partition. It could result in a build-up of unused partitions.
If your installation was affected and accumulated such partitions, v1.0.0 includes (mentioned earlier) an abandoned partition clean-up. The removed partitions will show up in the bin/trash.

Penpot Desktop doesn’t support running multiple copies of the application, which could result in broken configuration. The application will now prevent additional copies from starting and point to the already running copy.
Removed
- ⚠️ [BREAKING CHANGE] Removed elevated access mode for instance creator. #355
Starting with this release, local instances require Docker to be able to run unprivileged on the host. For example, Docker Desktop and Rootless mode allow you to run Docker without elevated access.
If you created an instance using the elevated access option, you will need to switch to an unprivileged solution in order to perform updates or deletion from Penpot Desktop.
- ⚠️ [BREAKING CHANGE] Removed configurations’ migrations. #356
Migrations (transformers) in configuration parsers provided a way to apply breaking fixes without requiring everyone affected to manually fix a config file. Now that the migrations have been in place long enough to correct the majority of configurations, they have been removed to not accumulate workarounds in the parsers.
If you last ran v0.13.1 or older, I recommend first installing v0.25.0 and then updating to v1.0.0 - manually or letting the auto-updater do it.

The official Docker Compose configuration binds a self-hosted Penpot instance

The change upgrades the application's user settings configuration, making the settings retrieval non-destructive, where invalid or unknown entries are unused but preserved. It replaces the old solution where the config file was duplicated into a backup file (which could be overwritten by later backups), and makes manual editing of settings.json safe.

- Migrated window state persistence to Electron's built-in API. #345
Electron v44 introduced support for window state persistence and the application has been migrated to the built-in solution.

⚠️ This feature is experimental. For production-critical work, please use the manual setup guide.
📢 Unfortunately, I’m unable to test this feature on Windows. I would appreciate any reports on if and how it's working on this operating system.
Added an automated setup for local Penpot installation, based on the official Docker method for self-hosting Penpot. After you fill a short form, with an instance label and your preferences regarding analytics, Penpot Desktop will set up a local instance of Penpot on your machine. Once the instance is up and running, you will see it available in the app, communicated through an in-app notification and reflected in the user interface.

Added color setting validation to ensure correct theme application and fixed tabs' background with the default instance colour. In addition to the general validity rules of the HSLA colour format, it checks for quirks of the colour picker that the app is using.
Who is affected?
⚠️ If you manually edited a colour in the settings file and a color value has an incompatible format, you should receive an error report on launch. The settings won't be lost, they will be backed up and available for you to reapply - it is detailed in the error report.
🟢 If you haven't manually changed a color setting from the default value or used only the settings panel to set your instances' colours, you shouldn’t be affected. Although the old default value for the color setting was invalid, the app will update it with the new, valid, default value before validating the format.

Added file based configuration system for settings. Now you can move or sync Penpot Desktop’s settings between devices, share it with a team, or include in a back-up.
Settings are held in a human-readable, settings.json file. The directory with an application's user files is specific to an operating system and its configuration, but you can read about the default setup in Electron's documentation - see userData path for app.getPath method.
⚠️ It is a breaking change. After the upgrade, the settings will have default values and you will need to set them back to the preferred ones.
