Today, we released EmEditor v26.4.
1. Edit Huge Files in Fast View Mode
In v26.3, we introduced Fast View mode, which opens a huge file almost instantly without loading the whole file into memory. Fast View mode was read-only, so to edit a huge file, you still had to switch to the normal mode and wait for the whole file to load.
In this version, Fast View mode supports editing. You can edit a huge file without loading it into memory: you can type, paste, Undo and Redo, Replace All, use multiple selections, and run most commands on the Insert, Convert, and Sort menus. The original file does not change until you save it.
1-1. Merge the Edits, or Save Only the Changes
When you save a huge file in Fast View mode, you can choose how to save it:
- Save and merge writes the edits into the file.
- Save only the changes to a diff file leaves the original file untouched and saves your edits in a separate diff file. The next time you open the file, EmEditor loads the diff file and restores your edits.
The diff file also keeps the positions of the lines, so the file opens instantly the next time. You can save, load, and discard diff files with the new Save Diff, Load Diff, and Discard Diff commands (File > Diff submenu of the All Commands menu).
1-2. CSV Editing, Workspaces, and the FAST Indicator
- Fast View mode now supports the CSV commands that change the document, including cell editing, Split Column, Combine Columns, Combine Lines, Hide Quotes Temporarily, Hide/Unhide Columns, Reset Column Width, and Align Left/Center/Right (Pro version only).
- Fast View documents are now included in workspaces, including their unsaved edits.
- The new FAST indicator on the status bar and a lightning bolt icon on the document tab show that a document is in Fast View mode. Double-click the indicator to switch between the normal mode and Fast View mode.
We also added the Fast View page to the Customize dialog box. The Minimum file size to enable Fast View mode setting has moved to this page from the Advanced page, and you can choose whether to prompt when saving a huge file, whether to save only the changes to a diff file, and whether to save the line positions of huge files. The page also lists the diff files so you can delete them.
1-3. Macros and Plug-ins
Most properties and methods of the Document and Selection objects that change the document can now be used in Fast View mode, and we added the GetFastViewDiffPath method to the Editor object. For plug-in developers, most messages that change the document can now be used in Fast View mode, and we added the EI_GET_FAST_VIEW_DIFF_PATH parameter to the EE_INFO message and new command IDs for the diff commands and the Customize Fast View command.
1-4. Command Line Options
We added the /fast and /tail command line options. /fast opens a file in Fast View mode even if the file is smaller than the Minimum file size to enable Fast View mode, and /tail opens a file in Fast View mode and displays the end of the file immediately. /tail is equivalent to /fast /l -1, and we believe it is useful for quickly viewing the last part of a very large file, such as a log file. If you select Auto-Reload from the Changed by another program drop-down list on the File page of the configuration properties, the file is reloaded automatically whenever another program changes it, and EmEditor scrolls to the end of the file, which is useful for monitoring a log file that is still being written.
2. Faster
EmEditor starts faster in this version, and many operations on huge files are also much faster, especially in Fast View mode. In our tests, the main window was ready 1.93 times faster than in v26.3. With a 48 GB file on a PC with 16 GB of memory, Replace All became about 5 times faster and saving the file about 13 times faster, and opening the file the second time took only 0.02 seconds thanks to the line positions saved in the diff file. Sort and Delete Duplicate Lines in the normal mode also became about 6 times and 3 times

1. Fast View Mode for Huge Files
EmEditor has long been known as a text editor that can open huge files, and we have improved the performance of opening and editing large files in almost every version. However, when a file is much larger than the physical memory of your PC, opening the whole file still takes time, and the PC may slow down because of a memory shortage. In many cases, you open a huge file such as a log file or a database dump only to view, find, or filter it, and you do not need to edit it.
In this version, we added the new Fast View mode for such cases. Fast View opens a huge file almost instantly in read-only mode without loading the whole file into memory. EmEditor finds the positions of the lines in the background and reads only the lines that are displayed. You can jump to the end of the document immediately after you start opening the file, even while EmEditor is still finding the positions of the lines. Line numbers are not displayed until the positions of the lines are found.
Files larger than the Minimum file size to enable Fast View mode (4,096 MB by default) are opened in Fast View mode automatically, and a notification appears when a file is opened in Fast View mode. You can change this size on the Advanced page of the Customize dialog box. To switch between the normal mode and Fast View mode, select Fast View on the Edit menu. You can also select the Fast View mode check box in the Large File Controller.
1-1. What You Can Do in Fast View Mode
Although Fast View mode is read-only, most of the features you need for viewing and analyzing huge files are available.
- Both the Pro and Free versions
- Scroll, select (including vertical selection), copy (including Copy in Quotes), Jump, and Tag Jump.
- Display highlighted strings, comments, quoted strings, markers, marks, and the ruler.
- Find text, including regular expressions, the Number range and Fuzzy options, and counting the matches.
- Reload in a different encoding, including binary views, and Save As with a different encoding or newline characters.
- Compare documents, including with a document in the normal mode.
- Run external tools.
- Pro version only
- Extract with the Find dialog box, Multi-Find with the Batch Find dialog box, and filter and extract with the Filter toolbar.
- Use CSV modes, the Large File Controller, macros, plug-ins, and the AI menu.
Note that in Fast View mode, the number of bookmarks is limited to 100,000 per document, and the Incremental search options are disabled.
1-2. Much Faster, Even When the File Is Larger Than Physical Memory
Opening, finding, filtering, and extracting in a huge file are much faster in Fast View mode than in the previous version, even when the file is much larger than the physical memory. In our tests, filtering became about 9 times faster, and extracting became more than 10 times faster than in v26.2. If you often work with huge log files or CSV files, please try Fast View mode.
1-3. Macros and Plug-ins
Macros and plug-ins can also be used in Fast View mode. The properties and methods of the Document and Selection objects that do not change the document can now be used in Fast View mode, and we added the FastView property to the Document object. For plug-in developers, we added the EI_GET_FAST_VIEW parameter to the EE_INFO message and the EEID_FAST_VIEW command ID. Properties, methods, and messages that change the document fail in Fast View mode.
We also added the Text and TextLength properties to the Document object, and the scrollBy and scrollTo methods and the scrollX and scrollY properties to the WebBar object.
2. Enhanced Chat with AI
2-1. MCP Connectors
In this version, Makoto Emura added MCP connectors to the Chat with AI plug-in. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standard protocol that connects AI to external services. By adding MCP connectors, the AI can access external services and data while chatting with you. You can add new connectors on the new MCP C

Updated Certificate: When downloading the MSI installer, security features such as Microsoft Defender SmartScreen may temporarily block the download. This can happen because the digital signing certificate was renewed only a few days ago and has not yet built sufficient public reputation. If you see this warning, it is safe to continue the download. If you are unable to download the installer, you may need to change your browser’s security settings. If you still cannot download it, please wait a few days and try again. After downloading, please verify that the digital signature is signed by “Emurasoft, Inc.” The email field in the new digital signature shows “Not Available.”
We are pleased to announce the release of EmEditor v26.1.0.
In EmEditor v26.0, we introduced support for quickly opening extremely large files that consist of a single line with no newline characters. However, opening such files quickly is only useful if horizontal scrolling and editing remain responsive afterward. In v26.1, we have made additional performance improvements through algorithm changes, SIMD-based optimizations, and other enhancements, making horizontal scrolling and editing much smoother after these files are opened. We have also optimized many operations for large files that contain newline characters. The benchmark results shown in our documentation represent only part of our testing, but they demonstrate performance improvements of 1.34 to 6.06 times compared with the previous version. Many other operations have also been improved for better overall performance.
This release also includes improvements based on customer feedback. For example, when a file opened in EmEditor was modified by another application, reloading the file could fail if the external application had temporarily locked it. In v26.1, EmEditor now waits a few milliseconds before reloading, and if reloading still fails, the message box now includes a Retry button.
When saving multiple unsaved documents, there is an Apply to All option to the “Save changes?” message box. EmEditor now also remembers the initial state of this option.
In EmEditor v25.2 and earlier, sorting a file did not cause the document to scroll if you were viewing the beginning of the file. Starting in v25.3, we changed this behavior so that, after sorting, EmEditor would scroll to the new location of the line where the cursor had been before sorting. Although this was intended to be the correct behavior, we received feedback that it made EmEditor less convenient to use. Therefore, in v26.1, we added the The cursor moves to the correct position when sorting option and restored the original behavior by default. However, when using the Sort by Similarity command, the document may still scroll so that the cursor can move to the correct location.

EmEditor v26.1 includes several improvements to the ChatAI plug-in. In earlier versions, the AI Prompt feature allowed only one provider, such as OpenAI or Google, and one model, such as GPT-4 or Gemini 2.5 Flash, to be used for all prompts. This meant that if you wanted to use different providers or models for different prompts, you had to change the settings each time. In this version, the AI Prompts page in the Customize dialog box lets you choose a provider and model for each individual AI prompt. For example, you can ask the same question in quick succession using different providers or models and compare the responses. You can also set different Reasoning Effort, Text Verbosity, and Web Search options for each prompt.
Added “Provider”, “Model”, “Reasoning effort”, and “Text Verbosity” checkboxes and drop-down list boxes, as well as a “Web Search” checkbox, to the “AI Prompts page” in the “Customize” dialog box.

EmEditor v26.0.1 is now available. This minor update fixes an issue related to the installer. There are no changes to the program since v26.0.0.

We released EmEditor v26.0.0 today.
To improve web page loading times, developers often “minify” JavaScript, CSS, and HTML by stripping out line breaks and spaces. Similarly, data formats like XML and JSON may be compressed into a single line to make them easier to process as a continuous stream, even if that hurts readability. Some types of scientific data are even more extreme—for example, genome sequences (A, T, G, C) can be stored as one uninterrupted string billions of characters long. Files like these are becoming more common, and we’ve frequently heard from users that they can slow EmEditor down. Because these files contain extraordinarily long single lines, they can significantly impact performance. In v26.0, we reviewed and optimized our internal code using multithreading and SIMD, and our tests show open/search/replace performance improvements of 2.2× to 666× compared to the previous version.
EmEditor has supported Unicode since its early days, but entering characters that are hard to type—such as uncommon kanji, foreign-language characters, or emoji—used to be awkward. You had to open Insert > Special Characters (Ctrl+Shift+I), enter a code value, insert the character, and repeat the process each time. In v26.0, we redesigned this dialog as a custom bar that can stay open while you work. It now also supports searching by Unicode name and Unicode block, displays results in a large, easy-to-read font, and can render color-capable characters (such as emoji) in color. For example, searching for “smiling” will return many smiling-face emoji.
The Insert Special Character dialog has been replaced with a custom bar, with improvements including a larger, color font and filtering by Unicode name and block.
The Character Code Value dialog (Ctrl+I) has also been updated to display characters in a large, color font, making complex characters and emoji easier to recognize.

Based on customer feedback, we expanded the Favorites feature. In addition to files, you can now register folders as favorites. Selecting a folder opens the Open File dialog so you can choose the file you want. We also improved drag-and-drop behavior: when you drag multiple files in from Explorer, EmEditor won’t add duplicates if the same file name (with no line/column specified) is already in the list.
Markdown commands for bold, italic, and code now work even when no text is selected. For example, if you run the Markdown Bold command with nothing selected and then start typing, the text you enter will be inserted as bold.
The Undo/Redo History dialog, which has long been available as a modeless window, has been converted into a custom bar. This makes it easier to keep the history visible in a convenient spot while you continue editing.

Makoto Emura enhanced his Chat with AI and Commit List plug-ins. In Chat with AI, we added a “+ File” button on the left side of the input box so you can upload a selected file to your prompt if you are using an OpenAI model. This not only makes it easier to send more content than you could by typing or pasting, but also lets you attach supported files such as HTML, PDF, and Word. This feature uses OpenAI’s file search feature. Uploading a file typically uses less tokens than pasting the entire file text to the chat. We also added the ability to search within chat history (past conversations). Note that AI features—including Chat with AI—require installing the separate ChatAI plug-in in addition to EmEditor.
Added the file search feature for Chat with AI, allowing you to upload files to use in chat.
In Commit List, we improved performance across multiple operations, including displaying the changes list and commit history.
We also fixed issues found during the preview build.

We’ve released EmEditor v25.4.0.
This update focuses first and foremost on speed. We optimized numerous parts of the code so that many actions now run faster, especially on CPUs that support AVX‑512. I used the Chat with AI feature to help write the new optimizations; it felt like having another excellent engineer at my side.
We also made classic, non‑AI optimizations. Find, Replace, Find in Files, and Replace in Files have been reworked to process UTF‑8 directly whenever possible, avoiding round trips to UTF‑16. Previously, Replace in Files on UTF‑8 converted to UTF‑16 and back; now replacements can happen directly on UTF‑8, eliminating conversion overhead. We also added a new Find in Files option: “Display File Names, Lines, and Matched Lines (truncate long lines),” enabled by default. Even when targets include very long lines (such as binaries), EmEditor now truncates output instead of printing entire lines for stable, responsive results. In our tests, Find, Replace, Find in Files, and Replace in Files were between about 2x and 6.5x faster.
Stability has also improved. Find in Files runs multithreaded, but searching many huge files at once could use a lot of memory. We now limit the number of threads that open very large files to reduce memory usage. If memory allocation fails, EmEditor automatically falls back to a lower‑memory, single‑threaded mode and retries the operation, lowering the chance of a crash.
After discontinuing the HTMLBar plug‑in in v25.3, some users missed the quick tag‑insertion buttons. In this release, you can define snippets directly in EmEditor and invoke them from menus, toolbars, or keyboard shortcuts. Execution is still handled by the Snippets plug‑in. To show the Snippets toolbar, go to View > Toolbars > Snippets. Create a snippet by dragging any text onto the Snippets toolbar, or define snippets via Customize > Snippets. For syntax details, see “To Use the Snippets Plug‑in” in the Help, or ask an AI for “EmEditor snippet syntax”.
Chat with AI (by Makoto Emura) has also received upgrades:
- New Web Search option for certain models (such as GPT‑5) to retrieve current information (for example, train timetables).
- New Text Verbosity control to adjust response length.
- Option to use environment variables (for example, OPENAI_API_KEY).
- Backend optimizations for better performance.

We released EmEditor v25.3.0 today.
Generative AI Enhancements (ChatAI plugin required)
One of the biggest additions in v25.3 is enhanced generative AI support, developed by Makoto Emura. This release adds Google as a provider and supports OpenAI’s GPT‑5. EmEditor now also supports Tool Calling, which lets the AI invoke a limited set of built-in EmEditor tools. It’s similar to an AI agent, but restricted to tools that EmEditor exposes—hence the name “Tool Calling.” With this, you can run natural-language commands on the currently open document via the Chat with AI interface. For example, if you open a file with email addresses and type “Extract email addresses from this document” into the Chat with AI bar, EmEditor will extract them and create a new document.
Added tool calling support. These EmEditor tools can be made accessible to the AI to read or modify your document.
To use Tool Calling, click the “Tools” button and ensure it’s highlighted in blue. You can also choose which tools are enabled on the Tool Calling page in Chat with AI settings.

The Chat with AI Settings and the AI Options page in the Customization dialog let you set Max tokens and Temperature (randomness). Previously, the default Max tokens was 4096, which could cause truncated output for reasoning-heavy models like GPT‑5. In this version, you can toggle Max tokens on or off. When it’s off, the provider’s default is used.
In Chat with AI Settings, you can also adjust Reasoning effort where supported. When Reasoning effort is off, the model’s default is used. Higher effort yields more reliable responses but can be slower. If you want the fastest replies, turn Reasoning effort on and select Minimal.
Sort by Similarity
EmEditor includes many sorting commands, and this version adds the ability to sort by similarity to the text on the current line or in the current cell. Similarity is calculated using the Levenshtein distance (edit distance) introduced in v22.0.0, with an option to ignore case. For example, if you have a CSV roster and search for Michael, placing the cursor on Michael and running Sort by Similarity will sort the list so close matches like Micheal and Mike appear first—making similar names easier to spot.

Markdown/HTML Toolbar
We’ve added HTML features to the Markdown toolbar introduced in v24.4 and combined them into a single Markdown/HTML toolbar. Markdown and HTML modes switch automatically. Opening a Markdown file and choosing Markdown settings or turning on Markdown Design Mode enables Markdown mode; opening an HTML file and choosing HTML settings enables HTML mode. Accordingly, the old HTMLBar plugin has been discontinued. The new HTML mode is more capable than HTMLBar. For example, the drop-down for Paragraph, Heading 1, Heading 2, and more automatically detects and shows the current style, and buttons like Bold, Italic, and Code reflect the current font state. If no text is selected and you click Bold, the word at the cursor becomes bold. Selecting the Bold command (Ctrl+B by default) while selecting text produces **text** in Markdown mode and <strong>text</strong> in HTML mode.
Added new HTML features to the Markdown toolbar, which has been redesigned as the Markdown/HTML toolbar. The previous HTMLBar plugin has been discontinued.
Performance and More
We continued optimizing startup performance in this release. The Extract Frequent Strings command is also significantly faster. In our tests, startup is 1.90× faster than v25.0, and Extract Frequent Strings is 1.42–4.44× faster than v25.2.

We’re excited to announce the release of EmEditor v25.2.0!
Expanded Generative AI Features (ChatAI plug-in required)
One of the major highlights in v25.2 is the enhancement of generative AI features. While EmEditor has supported the OpenAI API since v23.1, we’ve received many requests to support additional generative AI services, especially those compatible with the OpenAI API. In response, Makoto Emura has made the following improvements to AI prompts and chat features:
1. Support for DeepSeek API
The DeepSeek models, deepseek-chat and deepseek-reasoner, are now supported on Chat with AI and AI prompts. DeepSeek provides AI services similar to OpenAI. To use DeepSeek, you will need to create a DeepSeek API key.
2. Support for LM Studio
Using the OpenAI or DeepSeek APIs requires an internet connection and sends data externally, but running an AI model locally is more private. That’s why we’ve experimentally added support for LM Studio, a program that lets you run various open-source AI models on your own PC. After installing LM Studio, you can try many different AI models. Note that some models require significant disk space or specific hardware (CPU/GPU). For example, Gemma 3 12B (8.15GB) didn’t work in my environment, but Gemma 3 1B (720MB) ran fine. Local models may not match OpenAI or DeepSeek in performance or response speed, but they’re free and don’t rely on paid services. Even more powerful models may be available in the future.
3. Support for Compatible Models
You can now freely customize endpoint URLs for both the OpenAI and DeepSeek APIs, making it easier to use other services compatible with these APIs. However, simply changing the API endpoint doesn’t guarantee compatibility, so please use this feature at your own risk.
With these updates, you can choose between the OpenAI API, DeepSeek API, and LM Studio. OpenAI and DeepSeek offer similarily powerful models. If you want a free and secure (but possibly slower) AI, LM Studio is a great choice. Select the AI model that best fits your needs and budget.
4. AI Connection Settings Moved
The AI settings for Chat with AI that were previously in Customize AI Options and Customize Chat with AI have been moved into the Chat with AI window. You can access the new settings dialog window by opening Chat with AI, clicking the ⚙ (Settings) icon, and selecting Settings.
5. Reasoning Support
Chat with AI now supports reasoning models, including DeepSeek’s deepseek-reasoner and OpenAI’s o4-mini. These models provide more intelligent and accurate responses compared to non-reasoning models. When you use a reasoning model, the response will show a Show reasoning button at the top of the response. By default, the reasoning output will be visible, but you can hide it by clicking the button.
6. How to Use
Since v25.0, you need to install the ChatAI plugin to use AI features in EmEditor (not available in the Store version). If you haven’t installed it yet, please do so first, then check Enable AI in the AI Options of the Customize dialog. Starting with this version, API keys and model settings for the OpenAI and DeepSeek APIs are now configured from the ⚙ (Settings) icon in the sidebar at the top left of the AI and Chat screen. API keys and models entered in the AI Options of the Customize dialog are now used specifically for the AI-assisted writing feature. For details on obtaining API keys or setting up LM Studio, please see the How to Use the Chat with AI Plugin. Please note that the AI-assisted writing feature currently only supports the OpenAI API, but support for other AI services is planned.

We are pleased to announce the release of EmEditor v25.1.0.
1. Improved Chat with AI Experience
The “Chat with AI” feature has been further enhanced by Makoto Emura, making it even easier to use. AI responses now display beautifully with full Markdown formatting—links, text styles, and paragraph breaks are all preserved. The left sidebar in Chat with AI shows your chat history, so you can revisit previous conversations anytime. Starting a new chat is as simple as clicking the + New Chat button. Since each chat only uses its own context, managing conversations by topic can help reduce OpenAI API token usage and save on fees.
The “Chat with AI” web app is now hosted from the emeditor.com domain. However, all AI requests are sent and received directly from OpenAI without going through emeditor.com. No AI data is stored on our server. You can confirm this by pressing Ctrl+Shift+I in the “Chat with AI” custom bar to open DevTools, and using the Network tab to inspect AI requests. With this setup, there’s no need to run a local server for the web app, and it allows us to update or improve AI features independently of main EmEditor releases.
In v25.0, AI features were moved to a separate ChatAI plugin. However, due to a bug, the plugin might have been installed during updates even if you hadn’t used it before. This issue is now fixed. If you don’t use AI features, please check your installed programs via Windows Settings and uninstall the ChatAI plugin if needed. (Note: Earlier versions of the plugin couldn’t be uninstalled via EmEditor’s Plugin Settings if you used the installer version.)
If you do use AI features, the ChatAI plugin may not auto-update. Please download the latest version here and install it manually. Once you have v25.1.0, future updates will be automatic. You can check the plugin version in Windows settings or from Customize Plug-ins in EmEditor.

- Install both EmEditor Professional and the ChatAI plugin
- The Store App and 32-bit versions are not supported

2. Enhanced Bookmark Management
By popular demand, bookmark history improvements are back! In v21.6, we removed the “Do not clear bookmarks” option to prevent crashes from large histories, but many users requested its return. In v25.1, you can now set bookmark history to “Unlimited” in Customize > History. We’ve optimized memory usage and added notifications if your history grows too large.
A new List of Bookmarks command is now available by default in the Bookmarks menu, showing all your bookmarks in a convenient custom bar. Click to jump, or right-click to clear individual or all bookmarks. The List of Bookmarks feature is available in both Professional and Free editions, but bookmark history is only supported in Professional.

3. Performance and UI Improvements
EmEditor is now even faster! By removing legacy code that was only needed for compatibility with older versions and optimizing processes like program initialization, we’ve significantly boosted startup speed. According to our tests, EmEditor now starts up 58% faster thanks to these code optimizations and other enhancements.
Many operations are now noticeably quicker as well. For example, entering a string in the “Find” dialog and clicking “Select All” is now over 19 times faster, thanks to multithreading and further code improvements. Other tasks that have been sped up include replacing all instances of a particular string (even those spanning line breaks), vertical selection, bookmark-related commands, and adjusting filter settings with incremental search.
If you’re using a version older than EmEditor v22.3 (released more than three years ago) and want to keep your existing settings, we recommend first updating to v25.0.1 before upgrading to the latest version.

We are pleased to announce the release of EmEditor v25.0.0.
Since EmEditor Professional v23.1, we have introduced several generative AI-related features powered by OpenAI. While many users have welcomed these additions, some corporate customers have raised concerns about security. Although disabling AI features within EmEditor prevents their use in the editor itself, it doesn’t completely eliminate potential access to AI services through web browsers or other applications on an internet-connected computer. Nevertheless, we understand administrators’ desire to minimize the risk of sensitive file content being leaked from text editors. In v24.2, we introduced the option to fully disable AI features via administrative privileges; however, some administrators still felt uneasy about merely changing settings. This release also includes several improvements to AI-related features. First, when generating images, you can now choose between standard and HD resolutions. This option is accessible via the new HD checkbox in the New Prompt dialog and the AI Prompt page of the Customize dialog when selecting Image as the output type.

We’re excited to announce the release of EmEditor v24.5.0. We strongly recommend all users update to this new version.
Many users depend on EmEditor for managing large files daily, so ensuring seamless opening, editing, and saving is essential. However, from versions v22.4.0 to v24.4.1, there was an issue where file sizes could increase when reopening large files (around 300MB or more) from certain hard drives, even though the first opening was fine. This was reported by a customer, and we appreciate his feedback and apologize for any inconvenience. This issue didn’t occur with fast hard drives like SSDs, but on slower drives with disk cache enabled, duplicate lines could appear. We fixed this in v24.4.2. In v24.5, we’ve added code to prevent such unknown issues by showing a message if there’s an internal file size inconsistency. Therefore, we strongly recommend all users update to v24.5.
Additionally, v24.5 introduces a new Verify command in the File menu. By selecting this command right after opening a file, you can save the current document as a temporary file and compare its size and SHA256 hash value with the original file.

The results are displayed in the File Verification Results dialog box, and you can copy the size and SHA256 hash value. Normally, the original and temporary files should match in size and hash value. However, discrepancies might occur if the original file contains NULL or invalid characters, or if there are hard drive or memory errors. For important files, please use the Verify command immediately after opening to ensure everything is correct.
The File Verification Results dialog box provides information about the outcome of the file verification process. The current document is saved as a temporary file, and its size and SHA256 hash value are compared to the original.

We’ve also added an option in the File page of the Customize dialog box for automatic verification every time a file is loaded.
The new version (v24.5) also includes several other features, many of which were requested by users.
When dealing with large files, it can be convenient to open only a smaller section and navigate to the previous or next section by clicking a button. This was suggested by a customer. In v24.5, we’ve added << and >> buttons to the Large File Controller, allowing you to move to the previous or next section within a specified size range.

We’ve improved the AI-assisted writing feature by expanding the options available with the OpenAI API, which was initially introduced in version 24.1. Previously, suggested text would automatically appear in gray as you typed. Now, you have the option to display suggestions only when you press Ctrl+Space, which helps reduce the frequency of OpenAI API calls. If you prefer the automatic display of suggestions like before, they will only appear when the AI’s suggestion meets a certain confidence threshold, which you can now adjust. For instance, if you set the confidence to 40%, the AI will show suggestions only when it predicts the next text with at least 40% confidence. To minimize suggestions from less certain predictions, you can set a higher confidence, like 80%, ensuring that suggestions are shown only when predictions are more reliable, thus reducing the number of OpenAI API calls. Additionally, we’ve added options to adjust the length of the input text used for predictions and the output text for candidate suggestions. Using longer input text for predictions increases accuracy but also raises the OpenAI API usage fee. Similarly, longer output text results in more words being suggested.

The main feature of the latest version (v24.4) is improved Markdown support, introduced in response to customer feedback (1, 2). It includes the new Markdown Design View that offers a near-WYSIWYG experience.

Markdown, introduced by John Gruber, is widely used across various platforms due to its simple text formatting capabilities for paragraphs, links, and images. Documents in Markdown are easily readable even in basic text editors like Notepad, making it popular for blogs, StackOverflow, Wikipedia, and academic papers. Recently, it’s also been used in AI-generated responses. The enhanced Markdown support aims to improve the display of AI prompt responses, a feature introduced in the previous version (v24.3).
A Markdown Design View button has been added to the main toolbar, allowing you to toggle the Design View on or off. When you select the Markdown configuration, opening associated files will automatically enable the Design View. This view is also applied to documents created using the AI prompt feature. You can adjust these settings on the new Markdown page in the Customize dialog.

Switching to the Design View displays the Markdown toolbar. By clicking the Markdown Preview button, you can view a preview of the Markdown using the WebPreview plugin.

Here are some key differences between Markdown Preview and Design View:
- You can edit in Design View, but not in Preview.
- Images appear in Preview, while they’re represented as emojis (🖼) in Design View.
- Line breaks in the source text may not be preserved in Preview, but they always appear as line breaks in Design View. Hard line breaks in the source text are marked with emojis (⏎) in Design View.
- If table headers are missing in the source text, they are hidden in Preview but shown as empty headers in Design View and can be edited.
- Code and regular text are displayed in different fonts in Preview, but in the same font with different colors in Design View.
- Specified languages in fenced code blocks are highlighted in Design View according to the language configuration.
- HTML tags, character references, and numeric character references in the source text are displayed correctly in the Preview, but they do not appear in the Design View.
- Heading lines are displayed in the correct font size in the Preview, but in the Design View, they are always shown in the same font size if DirectWrite is not used. By default, the settings use DirectWrite, so this should not be an issue.
Given these differences, it’s advisable not to rely solely on EmEditor’s Design View. Instead, check your work in Preview or an external web browser during editing.
You can change block styles using the dropdown menu on the Markdown toolbar, like Paragraph, Heading 1, Heading 2, etc. You can also format text with buttons like Bold, Italic, Code, etc. These buttons behave differently depending on whether text is selected or already formatted. For example, clicking Bold without selecting text will bold the entire word at the cursor. If the text at the cursor is already formatted differently, only that text will be bolded. Clicking Bold with text selected toggles the bold formatting. Other buttons allow you to create/insert links, images, tables, horizontal lines, line breaks, numbered lists, bullet lists, etc. These commands are also accessible from the Markdown submenu of the Edit menu, with Ctrl+B as the shortcut for Bold.
There’s still room for improvement in the current Markdown Design View. Some users might notice discrepancies between Design View and Preview. For complex edits, Design View might not be ideal.
